This cozy Italian restaurant is as sweet as its name. We sat outside with outdoor heated lamps and enjoyed what felt like an European atmosphere (I hope SF can help restaurants keep these outdoor seating enclosures!). The wine was excellent as were the salad and pasta dishes. Even the table bread reminds me of the type one often gets in Italy. This is definitely worth a repeat visit.
I really enjoyed my dinner at Amarena. I got the Pappardelle, which was delicious, and my friend got the Gnocchi which she also enjoyed. The server was attentive and very nice. Our table was pretty close to the one next to us, but it didn't bother us too much once we got talking. Overall the price was great for what we got.
Great Service!! Classic Italian, good food, great atmosphere
Quaint place with excellent service. Could use some sprucing up but the menu and food made up for that.
One of my favorite restaurants in SF — delicious food and wine as well as lovely waiters and hosts!
Excellent meal, best Italian we had in San Francisco.
Thanks Oscar for taking care of your a long-time local customer and neighbor.
Top notch food and service! Great neighborhood spot!
Fun and tasty per usual
This is our third time having dinner at Amareena. I would recommend this place to everyone! Food is excellent and the wait staff is welcoming, warm, and helpful
Went on a Friday night. There were some extremely loud patrons (a woman in particular) that we could hear across the restaurant - very unpleasant. The manager/owner comped me a glass of nice wine and did get them to quiet down a little. They eventually left.
We dinged the service a little because while our waitress was very pleasant and efficient, she was working at least ten tables, which was way too much. While I think this place could warrant a "5", it was not on this night.
Food was fantastic and staff was amazing!
Lovely place excellent food and service, Owner present checking on diners. Outside seating, despite heaters is a bit cool, but tolerable. Wonderful experience. Wish I could go there every week!
Incredible food and wonderful service. Have been to Amarena many times and it never fails to impress.
Best kept secret in Sf
Everything we ordered was great! Our waitress was very attentive and kind. They moved heaters over since it was very windy the night we were there.
Much improved since our last meal there
It was nice dining at an Italian Restaurant that served Authentic Italian Cuisine. Osso Buco (Veal Shanks) which I ate was served using high quality meat on a bed of saffron rice with a nice reduction of a white wine sauce. Good, clean, no shortcuts, just delicious , healthy food. I’m happy! Marco C
Food was amazing, from appetizers to main dishes. Really great service and fun environment to go with friends. They are working on building their outdoor patio.
The pasta is incredible! Skip the lamb chops - not the best. Service is fantastic.
Lovely neighborhood restaurant. The feeling of the neighborhood provides the atmosphere. Not elegant but good food
Authentic Italian preparations, in a cozy neighborhood place. Good Italian wine list as well.
Great food. Normal quantities. Nice taste and the service so excellent.
This food was incredible!! My husband said he had the best chicken. The burrata was fantastic. I had a pasta dish which was amazing. The wine selection was lovely. There isn't a large selection of non-alcoholic beverages for children--but that's fine, because the focus in on food, not beverages. Our server was charming and helpful. This dinner was a highlight for us.
After a sub-par experience at Amarena a week or so ago they bounced back with a superior performance this week. Impeccable service, great food and wine all with the special touch that only a place like Amarena can deliver. This is a Russian Hill jewel!
Beautiful place to enjoy outdoor dining in Russian Hill. Amazing food, cordial staff, love coming here every time.
Busier than ever with outdoor dining. Food was excellent and service was attentive.
Gino is the best - the food and the wine here are delicious.
Excellent food, slow service
A neighborhood gem with homemade pasta!
Delicious food. Excellent service. Friendly. The outdoor dining experience was exceptional with great heaters. Loved it!!!!
Great food at a great price !! One of my favorites in the city
Nice place - good food - nice service - Corkage was higher than usual ($30)
People were amazing!
Amarena continued to be one of the best choices for great food and wine in Russian Hill. Emphasis is obviously Italian cuisine with a broad array of choices. The only sour note in our recent visit was a slight feeling of being “ hustled” by our charming waiter to buy a more expensive bottle of wine. No need to push neighborhood regulars to do more than they want....
Our waiter was wonderful
We rang at 5pm to see if we could move our booking just 15min later bc we were going to be late for the 615pm sitting. We were told no, thsts fine we said, then she said either get here on time or cancel, we are fully booked. I managed to arrive on time and then had to wait at least 15 minutes to even get seated and another 30 mins to get a drink bc they were so unorganised. The 15 mins i tried to move really would have made zero impact whatsoever.
Already frustrated we learned that half the wine by the glass was not avail, no beer we wanted neither, and the overpriced bottles we were offered (some 3x the price!) were really not great. The menu also lacked some of the items and we felt that as it got busier the service struggled.
We had the wrong order brought to our table 3x. At one stage the server put plates on our table and when i stated these are not what we ordered, he proceeded to shuffle 3-4 more plates around on the table trying to figure out what went where. As the starters were put down finally, within 3 minutes they brought mains! We barely had a bite of our first starter and we were putting plates together, shuffling on the cramped table, 4-5 plates. It was terrible. We felt like we had to put the meals on 2 plates just to fit the food.
The food itself was ok. The lamb small but tasty, the pasta ok once we got the right one delivered. Burrata good. Bread old and hard.
Overall it was a not so great an experience. The staff could not handle the volume of guests. Plates wrong. Rushing. The ambience wonderful though and it felt ruined by a reataurant that probably on a quiet night would have been better. I just would avoid busy times. The lady server was lovely and if not for her it probably would have been 1 star.
I Would not go back though. There are sooo many better italian spots in SF, this is a pass for me :(
Extremely poor service. Would not recommend.
Pitted in the heart of San Francisco's beloved Russian Hill, Amarena stands well beyond its sweet little black cherry translation. The menu: perfect! The service: perfect! The locale: hopping with a heart that doesn't understand how to stop beating! Amidst a pandemic, this lovely has managed to extend some roots and shines like a diamond in the dust. Spell it with me: GNOCCHI And can I get an Amen? or Hallelujah?are (In the off-chance you've never made Gnocchi from scratch, you too can learn practice in patience.) Quite seriously, my downtime with my wife is precious to us both. We are cautious in how we choose to spend what little time we have together. Amarena pushed itself to the top of the list.
Great people. Genuine Italian. Super nice and friendly. Excellent food.
