Amarena is a chic, urban neighborhood hideout perfect for dates, a quick bite, or a casual dinner with old friends. Amarena delivers hearty, innovative and skillfully prepared dishes from the first course to the last.
Perfect local Italian restaurant. Never a bad experience. The pasta is out of this world.... the tiramisu is so good it should be illegal! Perfect family dinner spot but also great for date nights!
Great fun. Loved our service and our server.
Our server, Tanya, might be my favorite person ever. She was so attentive, candid, and nice. 10/10 would go back!
One of the finest Italian restaurants in San Francisco!
This was a wonderful find. We were a party of four, and three of the four meals were outstanding (ravioli di zucca, veal, salmon). The fourth meal (Bucatini alla Matriciana) was ok but just not as interesting as we thought it might be. All in all, however, the ambiance was great, and our waitperson was just wonderful and very accommodating. This restaurant is a gem and we'd highly recommend it.
This is perhaps the best Italian venue in all of SF - the owner greets you at the front door, very hospitable, wonderful food and a great wine selection. Also a great romantic getaway although since we are just around the corner we go at least once a week when we are in SF.
Excellent service and polenta was amazing!! Quiet neighborhood gem!
Say Buona sera to Paolo and dig in to authentic Italian with a wine list to match. We had rabbit with pappardelle, a fabulous salmon, and a delicious bottle from Abruzzi (two actually). Amerena can do big groups in their dining room and there is bar seating for a cozy experience.
Best meal I’ve taken my staff for hands down. Unfussy yet attentive service, and the food was fantastic.
Got there when they first opened. Very nice atmosphere. Our server was very sweet as was the owner/manager. Food was very good. Loved the tiramisu. We will go back.
Staff was great! Good was delicious, can’t wait to go back again!
Amazing food every time. Great service and friendly staff.
Server was wonderful and owner came out to say hello.
Unfortunately ravioli was on the salty side.
Seafood pasta was excellent.
This is truly a neighbourhood gem! Owener is from Italy as well as the server. Very friendly , outgoing , wonderful homemade “Nona” food. Really enjoyed our evening . Only 1 thing but this has nothing g to do with good/service. the restaurant was a wee bit “dated “ could do with a makeover
Everything about Amarena was great, the wine, the food, the service, the ambience, all very enjoyable. Then a group came in that had a couple of loud women towards the end of our evening. Certainly not the restaurants fault at all. Having been to this restaurant before several times, this was unusual. I think I can write that part of the evening off to a group that had been out having too good of a time on New Years Eve.
Fantastic service and wonderful food! The owner treats you like family, and the employees are kind and take great care of you. The food was delicious and reasonably priced/portioned, and the ambience is just lovely. Highly recommend!
A great discovery! All the warmth and attention of a family restaurant in Rome or Venice. A great choice
of a traditional Italian menu with pasta a perfect al dente! Not really fancy, but the food is very beautifully done with a few high end flourishes. If you're from SF it's a great place to introduce to a friend or two.
You probably need a reservation on weekends! Bravo to the gracious service an attention.
Love this place. Had friends in town and it was the first restaurant that came to mind. Preferred over going to North Beach. Super friendly and accommodating staff.
Vongole spaghetti clams had sands in them. Lacking in taste, pretty average.
Amarena has become one of our favorite Russian Hill restaurants. We went there two times this week which was a busy one for us. The food is terrific! Highly recommend.
Charming Italian restaurant and the staff are the same! The food was super- I could smell the garlic fragrance as
we got close to the front door!! I recommend the chicken and the stuffed
Mushrooms appetizer. Great neighborhood restaurant- it a keeper!
We had a delicious dinner. The sea bass was fresh and cooked simply and elegantly. The arugula and pear salad was distinctive and really good. The eggplant and the mushroom appetizers were spectacular. Finishing off the meal with a rich gelato with a cherry sauce was a perfect ending to an excellent dinner.
Definitely have a look at your receipt after they run your credit card. They charged my sister $560 instead of $56 and they only picked up on it once we pointed it out. I'll be back here because it's in my neighborhood and the food is good, but definitely keep an eye on what you've been charged.
Food was great, ambience perfect. If you’re looking for a San Francisco neighborhood Italian dining experience, this is the place!
Discovered the wonderful menu of Amarena in 2010 on our first vacation to San Francisco from NJ. The homemade pasta is absolutely delicious and rivals the best Italian restaurants in NY and NJ! Since it is located in Russian Hill and not in the busy/touristy areas of SF, it is probably more known to locals than to visitors. But every trip to SF, roughly every other year, absolutely includes a dinner (or two!) at Amarena. Never disappointing and always fabulous. The place is small and cozy and this last time we opted to go on a weeknight when it was less crowded. The Homemade Ravioli Stuffed with Butternut Squash is my personal favorite!
Amarena is a jewel; great Italian food, friendly service, good wine list and overall a sweet dining experience that is hard to find anywhere.
We had a delicious dinner - tried many different plates - salads, veggies, salmon, pasta, meatballs ... everything was enjoyable.
Everything was spectacular. Food was delicious, the service was great.
Love this place. Great food and wonderful vibe. Cozy, romantic, old world charm. The only problem I have consistently had is that I would like to stay longer. Since it is so small I feel pressure to leave sooner than I would like to. I recommend making a late reservation at 7 or later so perhaps you can stay longer!
The food was amazing!! The Friday night I brought my parents for dinner there were two parties of more than 8 people in a dining area that only seats 25. It was difficult to have a conversation. Also we weren't seated for about 20 minutes even with a reservation. The two parties may have thrown everything off. I would like to go again. Perhaps they had a bad night.
Hidden gem in the neighbourhood!
Food was amazing, hadn't had such good and authentic Italian food in quite a while. We had the burrata and the poleta souffle, and a couple of the pastas -try the funghi & tartufo and leave room for dessert, the tiramisu is out of this world!
Food, drinks, atmosphere, and service are fantastic every time. This is our go-to date night spot!
Always a great place to have a lovely family dinner. Consistently great service and food is amazing. We will be back!
It’s obvious they care very much about their customers. Very welcoming, charming restaurant. We go back every time we are in San Francisco.
Great service and food but the tables were close together and while we we there it was so loud we could not carry on a conversation
What a lovely neighborhood restaurant. Personable, delicious and charming.
The food and service are outstanding. Thank you!
Our server was so fun! Food and atmosphere seemed more authentic contemporary Italian as opposed to Italian-American. We thought the sauces were good and the atmosphere was relaxed.
The food is excellent, the restaurant very pretty and the service quite good. We go often and
We love walking to Amarena from North Point with guests - you get some great views, get away from the tourist hub bub and its an inviting, local restaurant with great food! The squash ravioli is my favorite!
