Fantastic meal and friendly service.
Very good service. Very loud environment. Food a bit heavy handed, not as good as expected.
Great place. The butternut ravioli was delightful. Little tasty creamy clouds. Very reasonable portions.
A must if you visit San Francisco! I will not go out anywhere else for Italian when I visit! It is simply amazing! If you haven't been to Italy, you'll feel like you are if you go here! Enjoy!
Terrible service. Would never go back. Staff snubbed us when we asked about the promoted free drink special from our checkin on Yelp. Were not waited on for over 35 minutes after our request. There were only 3 tables and still we were unattended.
Terrific neighborhood spot with outstanding food--especially the pasta.
The food was excellent and the portions were just right. It is a good place to practice your Italian. The person that waited on us was very friendly, attentive, but not a bother. It felt like eating in Europe where they restaurant is in no hurry to get you out the door. Their home made pasta is tasty and prepared just right. We received a complimentary Sangria digestif.
Absolutely delicious eggplant dish and also the salmon dinner. Highly recommend.
A Russian Hill neighborhood gem, great food, great service and nothing more
Ravioli was absolutely amazing. Everything was super delicious, loved the pesto that cake with the bread. Glad we stopped by!
WE LOVED the Italian waitresss from Latina just outside Rome. Fun, knowledgeable and impeccable customer service. Highly recommended.
Menu choice not over long or over complicated, Italian food is best with fresh great ingredients, great flavor, this had all of the above, wine choice was great, loved the Sardinian wine in particular which is better known in Europe than here, also felt that pricing was fair. We we're a mixed group of Europeans and felt this was one of the better meals that we had in the Bay area.
Veronica was our waitress who was very attentive and knowledgeable about the wine and food. She also had a good sense of humor and wasn't patronizing.
Ravioli to die for! Wonderful atmosphere and Italian food selection.
Clearly one of the top 5 restaurants I’ve been to! The ingredients were so fresh. Nothing overdone, too saucy or cheesy like many Italians restaurants do. Notable dishes - butternut squash ravioli, Chicken in Madeira sauce, the bucatini dish, Gnocchi - all excellent! Bruschetta and pesto sauce were also superb! We will definitely be going back!
Excellent neighborhood restaurant. Creative Italian food, excellent wine list and terrific service. I had a pasta with a Maderia wine sauce that was outstanding. We also shared the grilled vegetables and a buratta dish that were both quite good. Also, an excellent chocolate desert.
All in our party (including 6th grader) gave the food two thumbs up!
The food is a real Italian, home-made one. Ingredients are tasty and the menu is well curated. A good mix of regional gems.
Approved by an Italian guest!!
We went there to celebrate our anniversary, had a nice window spot. the waiter and the maitre are lovely people who recommended the right plates to order! Desserts are delicious too!
Can’t wait to try other dishes in the future!
This is my favorite restaurant in the city. This was the first restaurant I ever went to when I moved to SF 4 years ago and I've not stopped going since then. I take any person visiting SF to this restaurant and any friend I truly care about because this is the best Italian food I've had in the city. The food is out of control good and the pastas are amazing. Starter dish you have to get is the portabello al balsamico. I actually hate mushrooms but this is the only mushroom dish I will eat and its amazing. The Pacherri pasta is the hidden gem on the menu. Get it and let your friends be jealous they didn't order it. The servers are super friendly and know their wine so ask for recommendations. The restaurant is tucked away in Russian hill/nob hill and its just amazing. The inside design feels like you are in a home and so the cooking feels like your in a home in Italy. Absolutely amazing is all I can say.
Based on reviews, we chose this Italian restaurant. My veal piccata was possible, but certainly not anywhere near as good as some i have enjoyed elsewhere. The ravioli was bizarre. They were so sweet you would have thought the dish was a drssert. The person who ordered it couldn’t finish it because of the intense sweetness. We were there on a Friday night, so maybe it is quieter at other times but on that night wr had jto shout at each other to even be halfway conversational. Never again.
Good food. Had one of the daily specials. Good value for San Francisco
Went here in a party of 6 and had a great dining experience. For starters we all shared frito misto (a must get, not too heavy at all), cold cuts with fried dough (can't go wrong) and bruschetta. As good as the starters were, and they were delicious, the mains were outstanding. Among our group we got pasta with seafood, seafood stew, bucatini and orecchiette dishes. The seafood stew was amazing. The seafood was cooking perfectly and the broth was outstanding. Will definitely come back!
Amarena was really nice! The owner is really nice as well. He came over to check to make sure our dinner was going well. Service was on point and the food was good. I would recommend this place to our friends :)
Very good! Real Italian! Excellent staff and atmosphere. I’m going to be back next time in SF
Staff was courteous, no waiting as we had reservation, appetizers and dinner were yummy! Great walk from north beach - nice view of the city!
Amerena is a San Francisco neighborhood gem on Russian Hill's west side. Real Italian cuisine with real ingredients and an adventurous wine list. Say Hello to Paolo, Bella and German who treat you like long lost friends in a cozy corner space with Tuscan decor. If they have the polenta souffle, get it. And the pappardelle cinghiale. It's real wild boar from California. You won't get that anywhere else in town.
Fabulous food & service
One of my favorite Russian Hill restaurants for 1-4 people who enjoy food, wine & conversation. I've dined at Amarena about 5 or 6 times since they originally opened many years ago and I've enjoyed each visit. I consider it not so much an Italian restaurant, but more like a restaurant you might find in Italy. 4-stars is a high rating for me but I give it 5 overall
This is a very sweet place, and the menu offers several excellent Italian options and a good wine list. That said, the timing was a bit off in terms of getting seated for our 8 pm reservation. It may have been an off night since it was 4th of July, but if I were a restaurant owner / manager and seated people half an hour later than their reservation, I'd throw in a comped glass of wine just to compensate. I would still recommend the place because the food is good, and the staff seemed well-intentioned and hard working.
Everyone loved the restaurant
The most good place where to eat a real Italian food to San Francisco. Managed by Paolo, a Italian man.
If you try one time, you surely return.
We ate there for Father’s Day. Though it was a busy time, the service was nonetheless attentive. The server suggested the risotto with seafood and it was delicious! We had the calamari and mussels as appetizers. Both were cooked to perfection. The entrees were all cooked perfectly and not dried out. The seafood stew was good but a bit on the salty side. Two had the spaghetti with clams which were very nicely cooked. Though we were full, we had to try their dessert. We ordered one vanilla gelato for one lighter dessert and the other was a type of fudgy chocolate dessert with vanilla ice cream. That was a pure chocolate lover’s delight. This place will be one of my regular places to come to now. It was also great that we found parking around the block as that can be a challenge in the area.
Our family of six adults went to Amarena to celebrate two birthdays and Father’s Day. The food was excellent, and the sangria delicious. Service was a little slow , and our order was slightly confused, but all worked out in the end. Our two negatives for this restaurant are the noise level – we were in the room with the bar and had several families with small children around us making the noise level quite exuberant. We also had the table next to the front door and it was a cool evening so we were all a bit chilled. Overall a really nice restaurant with excellent food and a pleasant atmosphere.
Wonderful host and outstanding food.
Superb as always.
We love this place, especially for the great food, the great ambience and always great service. We had great service from Germano and Bella; they were wonderful.
