Very nice neighborhood place, great bread, reasonably priced wines. Shared 2 of the pastas, both delicious. Nice that there's a 15% discount for being a member of 59 E 59 Theater!
Good food and service a little slow. Overall positive
Mona - would like to strive to be better. If there is a dish or item you remember dragging please let me know. Thank you for your feedback. James
The food itself was very good (delicious smoked trout salad and potatoes, Florentine benedict), definitely worth returning for. That said, the backroom with the skylights was FREEZING! There was a huge temperature difference between the front and the back of the restaurant. It was warmer outside than it was in the back and not a particularly warm day. Sit in the front and you'll be really happy with your experience.
Thyme - I am so sorry about the temperature issue. I would like to make it up to you. Please email me and I will address it quickly - my email included under separate cover. James - PS - thank you for the kind words
Terrible terrible service - AVOID
I wish I knew how to better respond to this review. If you would prefer to email me so I can address the concerns as best I can - james@amalinyc.
Food was delici0us and the staff exceptionally welconing.
C - We have been working on our training recently so thank you. Thank you as well for taking the time to provide positive feedback. If I can help in any way please let me know. James@amalinyc
Fabulous! We enjoyed it thoroughly and would go back again.
Mona - this made my day. Thank you. Please let me know when you do. Best - James@amalinyc
The menu was amazing and creative.
I had homemade spaghetti but it was a cooked a little too soft, but the sauce was one of the best tomato based sauce I’ve ever had.
I had chocolate mousse for dessert and it was amazing, the sweetness was perfect and it wasn’t too gooey like many other mousses I tried before.
The service was brilliant, waiters appeared to be knowledgeable foodies!
Thank you for the constructive feedback and kind words. I do agree - recently I have felt that the spaghetti has been a tad over. I will speak to kitchen about it. Please let me know when you come in next so I can see to the reservation myself - james@amalinyc
We had a reservation that I'd made on Open Table but they couldn't find it.....eventually they did. We were a table for 5 and a man with the most absurd hairdoo went to make our table for 4 large enough for 5 and then took us there. There were a few guys at the table near us and they left their backpacks and skateboard on the floor so Dale tripped on the skateboard. Her back hurts today. Is this the school cafeteria? Food was ok. Noise was too much. This is owned by the same folks that own Periyali but there is no comparison. We live across the street and had been there 2 years ago. We've not been back and do go to Periyali that's a 30 minute taxi ride. We will not be back
I am extremely sorry that the host did not - and should have - seen the issue with the guests personal possessions next to your table. I know my colleagues reached out but I would hope we could speak on the phone and I could address your concern as best I can. My email is james@amalinyc.
Everything was wonderful. Get the octopus, the cocktails are great, and they’re supposed to have great wine, too.
The review made my day. Thank you Eric. Pleas let me know when you come in next - james@amalinyc
The food is delicious the restaurant is a great quiet beautiful spot and the staff is kind andctogughtful
Shelly - Thank you for taking the time to provide positive feedback. If I can help in any way please let me know. James@amalinyc
Went with a friend. The Manager was very nice and let us try a few different wines since they had a variety of Greek wines we were not familiar with. The menu had a nice variety but some of the food was underwhelming for the price.
Thank you for the constructive criticisms and kind words. We unveil a new menu in a week, I think you will be happy with the prices. Best - james@amalinyc. Please let me know if you join us again.
charming place with excellent food and friendly service.
My scallops were delicious. My friend's Brick Chicken was dry.
Average food slow service. Ordered 5:40 told waiter theater at 7. No mains course until 6:30.
Great bar staff and really attentive service without being intrusive - the bar bench suited our gathering perfectly - thank you
Excellent food, good service, too loud! They need to find a way to make the restaurant a bit less noisy.
Relative to prior visits, the food was disappointing. May have been an off-early evening in the kitchen. The octopus appetizer was modest, very modest in fact, and the plating wasn't particularly attractive. Everything is relative, and our prior visits were always exceptional.
Nice food, good service.very pleasant welcome. Our quiet table got a little noisy as more people came in. Small portions at bigger-plate prices.
Great food and lovely service. Very nice evening.
One of the worst values I’ve ever experienced, which is saying a lot since I’ve been dining in Manhattan for 23 years. $38 for two normal sized scallops? Really obnoxious and an insult to their customers intelligence.
Overall nice, well appointed place with neutral decor. Food and service was good but not exceptional.
I found it to be grossly overpriced with a fairly small portion of Mahi-Mahi costing $44.00
Pre-theatre meal. Very generous portions. Excellent. Terrifically attentive service.
Dinner before theater.
The food and service was very professional. We went on a quiet Sunday night. Unfortunately a party of 8 younger diners, probably in the mid to late 20's were drinking, laughing, screaming and howling. They were incredibly disruptive to the few tables that were seated nearby. We almost left before ordering. We asked the manager to help and he was reluctant at first. He said they should calm down soon. It unfortunately got worse and thankfully the manager did ask them to act more appropriately. That lull only lasted for a little while but we were grateful for his attempt.
I would like to come back for mid week lunch, the menu is larger. So yes I would recommend it, as long as that crowd doesn't show up again.
Ribeye steak was super fatty and very expensive-$58!
Fabulous maître ‘d called Sukki, raised our expectations... a shared octopus appetiser could have been delicious if the octopus had been fresh!
We ordered two seafood entrees, mine the catch of the day was well cooked and fresh but not outstanding, and my partners delicate scallop dish were overwhelmed by way too much chilli.
I have been to this restaurant many times and this visit was extremely disappointing. The service was slow and indifferent. My main course was sea scallops, a dish I have had before at this restaurant, and it consisted of two scallops sitting on some roasted corn. This was more appropriate for an appetizer portion. I asked the waiter about this and he shrugged and told me that this is what the kitchen sent out, nothing to be done.
What will be done is that I will not return to this place again.
Second visit. Cozy ambiance. Food was a bit bland given the restaurant’s descriptions. Service was slow and unengaged in our dining experience.
Quaint, charming, cozy atmosphere with excellent service. The steak entree and chicken under the brick were both AMAZING! The restaurant was crowded enough to have a good buzz but not so noisy that we couldn't have good conversation.
Julie - thank you for the kind review. Please let me know when you join us again so I may see to your reservation personally. James. It made my day to read it.
Food was really, really good and so was service. We will be back!
our servers are more sanguine than we were about our ability to make a 7pm curtain (the restaurant doesn't serve dinner till 5:30pm), and we had to wait 15 minutes just to order and then in the end had no time for dessert or coffee. but the place is small and pleasant and the food quite, quite good. the fact that they offer a discount to members of 59E59 Theaters is an added bonus. we were 4 and had wine or cocktail, no appetizers, 4 mains and 1 side dish. bill before discount: $200. the night before, at a favorite mediterranean restaurant near Lincoln Center, our bill had been the same (though we may have shared a dessert), but we were only 3 that night. so there's that. and Amali's pasta sauces were deeper and more complex.
Extremely slow service, very expensive for small portions. I order the $38 scallops and got 2 scallops
Special birthday for very special friends —. We have dined several times at Amalfi -quality always.
Portions were small. I got very sick from the Burrata. We asked if the Burrata was fermented because it tasted a little strange and was very liquid. I was told that that was not and that it was supposed to taste that way. So I ate it like a fool ! I got a very bad upset stomach!
No birthday cake was offered.
Pasta was freshly made & marvelous! Everything tasted fresh and felt healthy. Deliciously light, yet decadently satisfying.
That is so great to hear about the pasta. Thank you for taking the time to provide positive feedback. If I can help in any way please let me know. When you visit us next we would like to send some champagne or an appetizer with our compliments as one small way to say thank you. James@amalinyc
Ambiance is lovely. I found the waitstaff to be pretentious- when I ordered a glass of Pinot Grigio, I was told they didn’t carry it - so I asked what he would recommend that was similar, he said we don’t have any similar- we wouldn’t serve it —- We both had the kale salad (tasteless) and tagliatelle bolognese - which was just okay - portion quite small - and all in all, pretty pricey-
So I wouldn’t rush back - it is near 59e59 theater so convenient for that - otherwise, no reason to return
I am sorry if anyone made you feel that we are pretentious. I grew up in Flushing Queens so I do not have that bone in my body. Please visit us again and let me see to the reservation - I will make sure to extend welcome gifts and a credit on your bill. I hope the manner I which we address this feeling speaks to who we are. james@amalinyc
It's an interesting space. We ate outside, so it felt like alfresco dining. The dishes were mediocre in taste and presentation. They could step it up a notch and make a special place to dine.
We would like to meet your expectations. Next time you come in please email me so I may see to the reservation myself. James@mali
The food was overpriced, we had the scallops with sand, the fish was badly cooked, the pasta was overlooked...
On top of everything the server would not leave us along and was constantly around us. The only nice thing about this place was the host. Never again
We (party of 2) arrived on time and were given a table that was constantly being bumped over by servers. We asked for a change and they reluctantly agreed. Other parties of 2 that arrived later were given much better tables that accommodated 4 persons. To be fair the food was very good and so was the service by the waiters.
I would like to make this up to you if you would allow me to do so. My email is james@amalinyc.
My family and I had gone to Amali for Mother's Day brunch. I would not recommend it at all. It wasn't too crowded so there was no reason for the service to be as abominably slow as it was. We waited an hour and 15 min for eggs! Our waitress rarely came to our table--twice I had to ask a busperson to find our waitress. When she did come to the table, she was so surly--in fact when she asked how I like my eggs, she left in the middle of my sentence. I and two others ordered the Eggs Shakshuka. The description of chili and cumin in the dish I thought could be quite spicy, and I asked our waitress if it was indeed spicy. She said that it had some spice but was quite mild. When I tried it, my mouth lit on fire. I could only take a few bites. The two others who ordered it, who enjoy spicy food felt that it was even too hot for them and they ate about half. I didn't want to order another dish since it took so long for these to come out. Additionally, they brought out 3 dishes and then we waited about 15 min more for the eggs. I think our waitress must have heard us complaining (not that she came over) and she came with 2 desserts which she said the manager comped us.
All in all, it was a very unpleasant dining experience, and one in which I won't redo.
I would like to try and address your experience and turn your feelings around if you would let me try. My email is james@amalinyc.
