ALX is a contemporary New American restaurant located in San Francisco’s SoMa neighborhood that exists to celebrate the American culinary experience through food, drink & hospitality. The menu features locally sourced, seasonal ingredients and dishes are created as expressions of the diverse cultural influences that make up our stories. Chef Jessie Lugo has sourced Domestic Wagyu beef from across the US, the famous Japanese cow known for it's incredible marbling. Maybe it was just a bad night, but from the moment our party of 5 entered the restaurant until we left it was just a farce. After waiting almost 20 minutes for a drink order, it took another 20 minutes to receive the drinks. Then we were delivered a bread basket with 2 pieces of bread for 5 people. Of the group, two of us ordered the duck, which should have been spectacular, but it was very disappointing. One of us sent it back, I pretended to eat until I felt sick. The other guests thought their meals were only adequate. I've been to Alexander's, so I was definitely expecting the same experience at Alx; that simply did not happen. Will not go back.

This was our second visit in two weeks. Appetizers and entrees were delicious. However, they may need a new pastry/dessert chef. Really underwhelmed by their desserts, pretty looking but lacked taste.

We dined on the travelzoo voucher, much like rest of the restaurant. Food quality was exceptional and much better than I expected. Service was also friendly and attentive. Unfortunately the ambiance doesn’t quite match the food prices and quality, so the slightly noisy and more casual environment is not as refined as what comes out of the kitchen. Prices are high but reflect the food.

Food was amazing and service great and unobtrusive. There was a group of people in the bar who had been there for 4 hours and making quite a loud disturbance until the manager asked them to quiet down. I had the vegetarian pasta dish which was one of the best meals I’ve ever eaten!!

This is first time going to the restaurant after purchasing a $79 voucher from Travel Zoo.

The bar area was nice and elegant. Drinks were super light on liquor. The lime on the glass rim was dried out. Sad about that since it would have been a great place to go for happy hour.

We ordered the 1/2 dozen oysters, octopus salad, $99 Ribeye for 2 to share, chocolate sponge cake with cherry compote and strawberry upside down cake. The waitress gave us complimentary sparkling wine as it was our anniversary dinner. The rib eye was excellent quality and grilled to perfection. The other items ordered were just okay. Unfortunately, the dining area was also a bit lacking. No tablecloths and real casual looking chairs. Service was mediocre. Our water glasses remained empty for a long while after we requested for a refill.

For the price they are charging at full price, they should pay some attention to detail (ie. tablecloths, nicer chairs).

Overall, I think the meal/experience was worth what I paid.

Overall I loved the design of the resturant and the new trendy look. Server was nice but lacked in attention we were in a private room, as somone who works in the hospitality industry I expected our server to be designated to our private room. It took ruffly 30 min to just be served water. When alcohol beverages were requested it took 30 min to receive food was over priced. Our server checked on us every 25 min if that, what should have been a hour in half dinner took 3 hours. Overall I had fun because I was with people i enjoyed but I've had better food and resturant can work on attention to guest and private rooms alot more. I wouldnt recommend this resturant simply because of the lack of service and I've had better tasting food for less expensive but again server when he was there was very nice and was funny and accommodating when he was present.

Second time trying this place. Service was much better than last time and they were very accommodating of our discount voucher. However, the food is just not our cup of tea. You can definitely tell that it's related to Alexander's Steak House. I had the filet mignon which came with the smallest amount of potato mash I have ever seen (probably 1 tbsp's worth) and it was whipped so much that it tasted like puree. My steak was medium rare, rather than the medium I asked for. My other half had the burger which was okay but nothing amazing. The menu seemed quite limited in the range of options for someone who likes 'proper' food - not foam, dust or smoked oil. We also had two starters - the salmon crudo and the wagyu slider - both of which were very small and again presented in a very pretentious way. The salmon was slathered in lemon and it was too sour. The bread roll was soaked with butter or lard, not appetizing. I was most excited about the desserts but unfortunately, they turned out to be the biggest disappointment. The chocolate cake was all broken up and scattered over the plate (deconstructed or something?), the ice cream scoop was tiny. The key lime "benedict" was laughable. The only edible bit was the meringue. I should have guessed that anything with "bubbles" was going to let me down. If you like pretentious food that comes in foam, bubbles and dust - you'll love it here. If you want to actually eat something delicious and filling, you'll need to try somewhere else.

Food was really terrible. We ordered a filet and something that looked nothing like a filet came out - and the cut was rubbery and somewhat mealy at the same time. Potato purée tasted like they forgot to season it. If you’ve been to Alexander’s this is nothing like it. It’s more like an upscale cafeteria. Really disappointed.

We choose this place to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Food was delicious with great cocktails. Our waiter was so nice and helped us pair alcohol to food. Beef tartare one of the best!

My husband and I tried out this place since there was a travelzoo special. Honestly without the special deal I am not sure I'll be back for the full price menu.

Drink: was "the 48th" something - cocktail made with suntory whiskey. Drink was alright.

Appey: we had the grilled octopus, that was tasty, as well as the beef tartare. thumbs up!

Entree: we shared the 32oz ribeye chop. We ordered medium but got a medium rare. The flavor was tasty but the meat quality could have been better; it was chewy.

Dessert was strawberry upside down cake and panna cotta with watermelon and melon gelee. Both was a disappointment. Do not order!

For starters, we had the octopus and beef tartar....amazingly delicious. The main was rare prime rib and it was compared to the House of Prime Rib on Van Ness. The server, Danielle, was awesome and stopped by several times to check on us. The manager, Sky, also stopped by. Friendly and competent service and great food and atmosphere. We'll be back.

Great service. Respectful staff members. Our service did an amazing job at keep track of my friends’ allergies and was able to make appropriate food suggestions for her. Beautiful ambience and delicious food. Personally, would have preferred more seasoning in the food but still was delicious and perfectly cooked the way I wanted it. Would highly recommend this place.

Location: Perfect location near a parking garage that doesn’t charge an arm and a leg.

Service: Front office individual was kind and welcoming. Server (Robert) is a professional at his craft. Very welcoming and on point with everything especially his recommendations. Thank you Robert for making our anniversary dinner awesome.

Food: Beef Tartar: I personally felt like it can use a little bit more salt and acidity but overall it was fresh and tender, still very delicious 4/5.
Scallops: best dish we had that night, tons of bold flavors without any fishiness from the scallops, perfectly seared 5/5.
Rib eye: perfectly cooked to temp, juicy, tender, just a little fatty but no complaints here 5/5.
Mac and Cheese: rich and delicious 4/5
Strawberry cake: it’s a different twist with the cake being a little more on the denser side and the mint overpowering the strawberry flavor of the cake. 3/5
Churro and horchata ice cream: a must have 5/5

We had the Travelzoo deal. Food was delicious. Had the scallops as my side and the prime rib for my entree. The waiter recommended the end cut and it was amazing. Flavorful. My wife had the oysters, and the filet. Also delicious. Dessert were strawberry upside down cake and the one in a melon. The melon seemed better for the value but both were great

Staff was courteous and prompt, they brought us to our table about 5 minutes ahead of our reservation. Provided us a complimentary glass of champagne since we were celebrating our marriage.

The food was very tasty. I ordered the deviled egg, grilled artichoke and the wife ordered the crab salad. We both enjoyed our appetizers a lot. Entrees we got the fish of the day and the pork chop. Both were prepared and seasoned great, we thought it was lacking in a carb department, it was mostly protein and sauces.

Dessert was interesting. Deconstructed chocolate cake with a savory sorbet and some white and milk chocolate mouse and a cherry type jam and crunchy bits of sugar or chocolate.

All in all the meal was good, not great but good, the service was very good too. We will defiantly come back and got all this with the travel zoo coupon

Four business men on a Saturday night talking shop. Our waiter was there when we needed him and invisible when we didn't. The wine list was excellent and varied and we chose well. Our meals were excellent and the dessert rocked.

Met friends for lunch to meet their new baby. We were seated back in a quiet semi-private area which worked really well for a six week old, parents, grandmother and moi!

Food was good. Iced tea as well. Two of us had fish of the day which we enjoyed.

Good waiter; cute dimples. Very discrete, kept us taken care of without being obtrusive.

Nice location SOMA. Nice space, good ambiance.

Service staff was professional and engaging. Food was lackluster and overly seasoned. Vegetables were on the soggy side. Don’t feel like the quality of food deserves the prices charged. The bar area seems like a good place to meet before heading out for a more unique dining experience.
