Grateful to have found this restaurant through OpenTable! Complimentary valet, so easy to pop right in. Great decor. Only reason to not give 5 stars is that it was bright and we were seated RIGHT next to others on both sides, so it was impossible to continue a conversation that we were in the middle of once seated unless we were comfortable sharing with our neighbors. Next time I would request a separate table vs getting seated along the length where the tables are clustered close to each other. I do think if lights were dim that it may have felt a bit better? We are friendly and used to eating out in close quarters, but this felt invasive. Hostess was gracious when I asked about moving and while we were not moved due to the other tables reserved, when the couple next to us was done, they shifted that table away from us. The BREAD was AMAZING! Our entrees were DELICIOUS! We had the Chef's Whim which was essentially a ravioli with short rib and the perfect blend of ingredients and the Swordfish entree which was to die for! Cocktails were good. Service was great and it was an awesome spot prior to hitting up a nearby movie. Sweet little vases at each table. (Fresh greens would be better than plastic ones as it really does feel like a quality, classy spot and it would have been a nice touch). We will definitely be back!
I ordered the veal chop and it couldn't have been better. I was also impressed with the steak knife!
Nice decor. Food was average. Caesar salad lacked real Caesar taste.
Excellent meals and service! We started with the new tuna appetizer which is not only tasty and delicious but beautiful with the avocado cream opposite the ruby tuna. The chips to dip into it were perfect. My husband ordered the duck breast special which he continued to rave about the entire meal. The blueberry compote with the duck was a great combination. The polenta was creamy and comforting. My spaghetti vongole is a favorite dish and of course it was perfect.
Menu selection for vegetarian was limited
We had to wait about 30 minutes for a reservation which was a little long but the food, and ambience were amazing!
We had a fantastic evening and the anniversary touch on the table and menu was impressive. Highly recommended!
Great food and ambiance. We went on Labor Day and it was not as busy as usual.
Great waiter and food was outstanding!
what a beautiful place! we appreciated the design of the restaurant immediately - and especially the ambient lighting. all of the food was delicious, especially the short rib with mushroom risotto. the carbonara was so salty I could barely eat it (fennel sausage) in the dish over powered the dish, though the fresh pasta was delicious.
we will be back to try more things!
The food is always top notch. Interesting preparation as well. First time I had a breaded swordfish which was excellent! Love the decor/ambience as well. Great service. We did have to wait almost 15 minutes with reservation on Open Table.
Have been to all three of there restaurants, all are excellent. Alto Forno's was no disappointment. Will dine at all three many times to come.
Went there to Alto Forno to celebrate an engagement. We go there often we had a reservation and still had to wait over an hour . I questioned the wait several times and was offered bread and a menu to order appetizers while we are waiting in the middle table but that never happened. once seated we did not see a waiter for at least 10 minutes and then still needed to wait for awhile just to order a second drink or get water. We did go advise a manager of what we were experiencing but that did not change anything the rest of the evening was the same sadly I did not enjoy my dinner at all because of this so I did not rate the food well
We sat outside and everything was pretty good - food, service, atmosphere. The only critique we had was the music was a bit too loud. We asked our waiter if it’s possible to turn it down a little and he said yes but it didn’t sound like it actually happened. It was otherwise great and we will definitely return.
My vegetarian meal was made wrong and had to wait for a remake. Very awkward since the guests had finished theirs by the time mine came back. Ran out of the wine they were drinking. Ordered dessert and that was sold out. Manager offered to buy dessert but charged us on the bill. Not a great night
Very nice restaurant with good food. Curious about the 4 seats at the bar that were reserved for quite some time when we arrived for our dinner reservation!?We enjoy sitting at the bar - is this something that is offered to all customers or just “special” guests!?
All fantastic! Food, waiter decor were all exceptional. It was a bit pricey but I would go again anytime!
Alto Forno does not disappoint. For years we have been going to their sister restaurant, Pellana. Having now tried Alto Forno, we will be adding it to our list of go-to spots. Highly recommend!
The ambiance is lovely; elegant and understated. Our serving was a delightful charming young woman. I truly appreciate the salad with lightly fried goat cheese. it was yummy and not over dressed. I have had some really poor salads in nice restaurants recently so I appreciated this. All our for entrees were very good; pasta with short ribs, excellent ans was the veal chop special and the bouillabaisse which is a little different form the typical fish stew. i had the pasta with sausage which was good, but not as good as the other entrees. We shared a yummy dessert. this place is a winner!
Very good service. Nice time we ate outside and it was very pleasant
Fresh ingredients, prep uninspiring. Service was good but not well trained for an upscale experience. Good for business meetings.
Head chef Matthew Marquis is an amazing teacher and chef.
Amazing short ribs!
Nice atmosphere. Waited for 10” for table time be ready. Waiter was nice and polite. Slight delay with a few requests and food delivery. ( needed to request steak knives)Food was excellent well prepared and seasoned. Only one dessert option so we passed. Pricey.
It was our first time , everything was very good except pasta carbonara . Too salty and pancetta over cocked
Out to dinner with family. Sat outside under gazebo. Beautiful night with beautiful light hanging over table. Waitress very nice & knowledgeable regarding menu. Appetizers were great & entrees were to die for. Manager & owner both came over to ask how everything was going. Staying later then others drinking wine & chatting but never felt pressured to leave. I’ll definitely return
Alto Forno is always a treat. Lovely room. The menu covers all palates with a creative selection of pastas, meats and seafood. The fig and whipped ricotta appetizer was delicious. The seared scallops were cooked and presented perfectly. Will; become a regular go-to spot on my dining destinations. I am already planning on returning this week!
Always great. Food is perfect and the atmosphere is terrific
The food was amazing.
Watching the action at the counter was so much fun! Highly recommend it!
The bartender had too many people for just him to handle, but he did it with grace.
I’m a fan. I hope my next visit is just as good. We have decided to be “regulars”.
Were in Salem MA for vacation and wanted pizza so we checked
out Alto Forno. It was a Saturday night and the joint was very busy.
Glad we had an Open Table reservation. Our table opened up in about
10-15 minutes, but at the last minute we decided to eat at the bar.
Great experience. The bar tender was friendly and nice to talk to
and we could converse with the guy making the pizzas in the
brick oven. It was a show all in its own. Very enjoyable.
Pizza was perfect (Neapolitan) and the salad was fresh and crisp.
It’s no wonder why this place is hopping.
Very nice restaurant, will go back. Such a nice touch, my husband's menu had "happy birthday" on it.
Excellent food with ambiance and great service. Looking forward to going again.
We went on a not busy Thursday night. The appetizers were quite good. I had the fresca salad, my husband had the calamari, another woman had the burrata salad, and the other man had "one of the best Caesar salads" he'd ever had. My salad was a bit too drenched in dressing, so it was hard to separate the leaves, but overall the appetizers were good. The waiter was exceedingly patient and attentive. He allowed us to sit for quite some time enjoying our drinks and catching up with people we hadn't seen for a year, before ordering. As mentioned, the restaurant was not busy.
The main courses were another story. The scallops were good, but that is where the compliments stop. Our friend had swordfish which was possibly breaded (seemed odd) and overcooked. It had a green olive taste, which was not described on the menu, and which she didn't think went with swordfish. My husband had the pasta with sausage and other ingredients, but it was overwhelmed by the spinach or whatever green was in it. Mixed together it looked unappealing, and the sausage could not be found.
My veal osso bucco was overcooked, if you can even overcook it! It was dry. There was so little of the cauliflower puree that it got lost in the greens also (spinach)?? I was really looking forward to the cauliflower. So, none of us voiced our concerns to one another until the meal was over. Then we critiqued it together and found only one of us was happy with our meal. I will not be going back.
I am always shocked that when a place is not crowded, you don't get extra care. Instead it was like the food was sitting around waiting for someone to order it. A big disappointment.
Food was really great. It was noisy at 5 pm at night as a party (looked like a work group) was loud. Service was good at the beginning and deteriorated rapidly as more people came in. Focussed of new tables versus cashing us out for example.
everyone from the valet to the hostess to the wait staff to the manager were and are amazing!
my friend and i had a wonderful time, the above description enhanced it 10-fold!
Another wonderful meal. Service was excellent and food delicious.
We will be back.
Overall, a very average Italian restauarant. Food was a mixed bag. The mussels were overcooked and uninteresting; the charcuterie appetizer pedestrian and sparse. My agnolotti, with I think roasted squash and ricotta, was tasty, though the pasta was a bit overcooked. The salmon and truffled scallops, alas, were boringly prepared. Pellana, their cousin restaurant across the way, is a far better venue for a night of fun dining.
Really great food and great atmosphere! I didn’t LOVE my drink but I’d be willing to try something else next time for sure.
I celebrated my birthday here and was made to feel so special from the moment I walked in and was greeted by Alex to the special dessert Vito and Chef Matt sent out! The food is consistently excellent - flavor, texture, color, presentation. Service is consistently excellent and Vito was out from behind the bar and was on our table. It's our favorite place to eat. Excellent!
Really great dining experience.
