To start the location is beautiful on top of Mt Washington, it was a foggy night but the city still came into view several times while we were eating. I was surprised with how large the dinner portions were, we did not go home hungry! The meal started with complementary popcorn as well as bread and mushroom shooters (the shooters change depending on the chefs choice). We ordered the filet and salmon, both were fantastic as well as the sides. For desert we had the s'mores, which was served in a giant chocolate ball that they melted down when served. Very cool experience, highly recommend, and we will be back!
Great food, great waiter, wonderful view, overall perfect.
The experience was amazing. The restaurant atmosphere is absolutely amazing. The service was fast and professional. Absolutely lovely experience. Food was amazing and brought out fast. Would recommend to anyone.
Every part of our evening was perfect. The attention and service was outstanding. The servers were all very knowledgable about the food and guided us to the perfect dish. Preparation was just right and very timely even though it appeared the restaurant was very busy. We also found another perfect wine thanks to the advice by our server. We will definitely be back.
Citius, ALTIUS, Fortius is Latin for "Faster, HIGHER, Stronger" and the motto related to the Olympics.
YES, I had to Google it…. “These three words represent a programme of moral beauty. The aesthetics of sport are intangible. The motto was introduced in 1924 at the Olympic Games in Paris.”
Could you find better words for Pittsburgh/Altius – I don’t think so…..
Visiting CTO’s (of $70B company) family in from Canada. Where to take them?! Altius!!! Food absolutely amazing, service was very attentive but not obtrusive, and view was unbelievable, only disappointed was that we went two days earlier than the Super Moon to shone over the confluence (three rivers) of Pittsburgh.
New York may have an amazing skyline – but I rank this view (and Architectural Digest) one of the World’s Best Cliffside Restaurants!!!
Thank you, Patty, Bea, Jessica, Rob and Mick. Youseff was our server. Thank YOU!
My boyfriend and I can here for Valentine’s Day weekend and haven’t stopped talking about it. The service, the food, the atmosphere, everything was worth it. It’s not cheap but it’s worth every penny.
I’ve enjoyed May dinners at This establishment in the past but last night was not good. The food was over cooked and the presentation was sloppy. I left feeling like my time and money were not invested well.
Been here twice and it was even better the second time around. Best steak I ever had, and by far the best food that Pittsburgh has to offer. Knowledgeable staff and beautiful views. If you're visiting Pittsburgh and do not eat here, your loss.
We had a wonderful time and enjoyed everything. Our waitress was very kind and helpful. Our food was wonderful! The truffle popcorn was amazing as was the crab toast. We were there celebrating our marriage and we couldn't ask for a better place to celebrate at. Thank you we had a great time!
Terrible Service, Mediocre Food, Great View
Our experience was humiliating and upsetting. When we arrived for our reservation we were met by a rude hostess who had us wait 20 minutes for the worst table in the restaurant. We asked to be reseated and were told we were 1st in line for a window table, but it would be ½ hour. So we opted to wait.
45 minutes later, and after seeing 2 parties who arrived after us be seated at window tables, my girlfriend asked the hostess when our table would be ready, and the hostess said: “You can sit at the 1st table I gave you or you can leave.”
My girlfriend then asked for a manager, and the “service director” came out, abruptly ignored her when she tried to speak with him, spoke with hostess, and turned to my girlfriend and in a most disrespectful manner said: “If you don’t like our seating policy Ma'am, may I suggest you leave.”
We were shocked. I tried to intervene, but the service director had called security and Mick arrived in a few seconds. To our surprise, Mick defused the situation, listened to us, and arranged a table. We thanked him profusely as we were most grateful.
We were seated and wait staff was very cordial, and they made a great suggestion for a wine paring as well as to combine the lobster with the lamb rack, which was delicious. However, my girlfriend ordered the roasted chicken that came out so severely undercooked that blood ran out of it when she was cut into it. She pointed this out and they took it back to re-heated it. However, upon return, it was so overcooked, it was inedible. They offered to bring something else, but she was so turned off that she declined.
Bottom line is that if you like to be treated rudely, made to wait unnecessarily, be ignored and disrespected, just to get some undercooked chicken, then this is definitely the place for you.
Oh, I almost forgot to mention, it does have a great view of Pittsburgh. But so do a number of other restaurants along Grandview Avenue.
We have always loved Altius since it first opened. Wish great beginnings would last forever. Still, service and view remain on top but two of our four entrees were way less than satisfactory. The chicken was over cooked and tasteless. The pork chop was also cooked way longer than what had been requested and was sent back. Dessert was comped but no one likes to eat their entree after everyone else has finished.
The view and presentation will bring us back one more time in the hope that the kitchen gets an upgrade in personnel.
ALL ACES: Bea, Jessica, Mick, Rob, and Patty do it again. We continue to explore the city’s best restaurants, however, Altius cannot be beat. Looks like OpenTable and 3,000 other folks agree at 4.9 across 3k reviews. We had the sea bass, scallops, veal and the lamb. We shared appetizers and desserts. This fine dining may not have been setup for family-style; we shared each of the meals. Thank you for making our going-away party spectacular. ALL ACES! -hashtag CRABtoasts. 👍🏽
This was our second dinner here for our anniversary! Our server, Tom, was wonderful! Food was excellent as before!! Thanks for making our evening wonderful!!
One of the finest dining experiences in pittsburgh. The food, the view, the drinks, the atmosphere, the service- you won’t find a place better. To make this experience particular unique- my wife had 5 different allergens she had to avoid. We notified the restaurant ahead of time, and our waitress had memorized those allergens and was prepared to answer questions regarding any menu item, but also point my wife in the right direction regarding what to eat. When an item was unavailable due to an allergen, the kitchen made it a separate way just for her. It’s difficult to find restaurants to accommodate- so for Altius to go above and beyond like this was extraordinary. I’m overwhelmingly thankful - we would definitely go back just due to the service, but of course to also have the best food in the city.
Food was mostly terrific.
Desserts surprisingly below par. Great to see.. just OK to taste.
But I would go back. My reservation... its too pricey.
Food and view were good. They have a woman who walks around recording what you eat with an iPad. I can understand the need for data but this seems to be happening all over the place and is very annoying to say the least.
We went there this evening for the first time to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It was simply amazing. The staff were wonderful. The view was amazing, even with it snowing. And the food, it was incredible. The crab toast was so tasty. The lamb rack was seasoned perfectly. Probably the best lamb I’ve ever had! And a cappuccino and campfire s’mores was the perfect end to our evening. We will definitely be back!! Many compliments to the chef!!
Service is impeccable every time. Food is always amazing. By far the best in the city.
Everything was up to the great standard we have experienced on previous occasions. The constantly dimming lights were a distraction however!
The food was great. I would recommend that you enjoy this experience.
I made reservations at Altius and Off the Hook while we were visiting family in Pittsburgh. Altius is by far head and shoulders above Off the Hook. From the small touches like the amuse bouche, various delicious and unending bread, creative cocktails, and table side visit of the owner/manager, Altius established itself as the top of its class. Service was wonderful, friendly, helpful, and unrushed. Food was well seasoned and each component was stellar individually as well as composed together. For an expensive meal, Altius makes it worth it. Plus the view! Make reservations before sunset for a real treat and full experience.
Perfect evening celebrating for my Son's 17th birthday. Everything was amazing, from the food to the service.
Perfect date. Beautiful views. Attentive staff. Best food quality and great portion sizes !! We will be back soon!!!
A delightful surprise at the end of a busy day. View was fabulous, and everything was delicious without being super expensive.
Altius was absolutely fantastic. Top notch service, delicious food, beautiful decor and a breathtaking view.
Service is perfect! Food is more salby than it used to be...
I asked for siting near the window(we were in Pittsburg just this evening)but they regret it without reason.
It was a Monday evening. Probably an off night for them. One meal was fine ...Filet....the other ...Salmon...was inedible. Will not be back.
Gre1at food and service. Highly recommend. Will return
Superb food, drinks and service to complement the amazing views. I am glad they have a dress code; I encourage them to enforce it so we all can have a beautiful evening when we are paying so much.
WOW, food, wine list and service was truly delightful. Incredible view adds even more! Yes, wonderful!
My girlfriend goes to medical school in Greensburg, PA and I flew out from Arizona to visit her and celebrate my her 23rd birthday. We came to Altius because it had amazing reviews and it exceeded out expectations. We will definitely come back and recommend this restaurant to all of our friends! Thank you so much for wonderful experience =)
We went here for our Anniversary and had an amazing experience from the service to the food. The specialty drinks were delicious! This place is great for special occasions and worth every penny. Will be returning in a few months to celebrate my college graduation!
This is the third year in a row that my wife and I had celebrated her birthday at Altius. Each time has been an exceptional, memorable experience. We love the ambience and the superb view of downtown and it's surroundings. The price is a little steep, but an experience like this always costs a little more regardless of the restaurant. At the end of the night we've eaten a delicious meal and dined in a very elegant restaurant. We will be back in the future Altius, and we shall see you then! Eric and Dawn
Absolutely amazing food and service. Views were incredible. Highly recommend.
Our favorite restaurant in the Burgh! We celebrated our anniversary and everything was perfect...the service, the atmosphere, the food....OMG the food. I cannot say enough about this place.
What was so impressive was how all of the workers in this establishment were so pleasant. Made for a very nice evening and we have already recommended it to a number of people.
This was a wonderful experience, they added something special to our dessert for our anniversary, special treat to take home, chef special treat to try, bread options, very skilled and accommodating staff and honestly some of the best food I’ve ever had. A little expensive, but great venue for a special occasion or special night out. Truly wonderful and would recommend to friends and family.
