I've been waiting for a downtown gourmet vegan restaurant to open in chicago and Althea definitely fits the bill. I can't lie, its a little weird walking through a department store and finding your restaurant in a secluded corner but once there you forget you are in a department store. View is lovely and space is as well. Food was outstanding. Disappointed they didn't have liquor license yet as I was hoping for an interesting cocktail or organic wine, but they did call ahead to warn me it was BYOB. I took a friend who was skeptical of vegan cuisine being gourmet and not just a veggie burger, and she was totally blown away by the food as well. Highly recommend trying it.

Finally! A “NICE” vegan restaurant - special occasions, anniversaries, birthdays. The views are amazing, and the service is top notch. Can’t wait to go back. Right now they’re BYOB - go now :-P and bring your own... once they sell booze, the bill will be much much higher, I’m sure!

If you are looking for fresh food yes but for good service no. The waiter took time to explain the menu to every table except mine. She checked on me once. I sat there for 10min to get my check after I was done.

I have been to Althea 5 times now and the food is just sooooo good. Being a vegetarian who is moving towards being a vegan, I’m so glad that at Althea, I don’t have to think about what is in the dishes.

This was a very interesting experience overall starting with the location. The restaurant is located inside of Sak’s Fifth Ave on the 7th floor where the men’s department is. To get in when the store is closed, we had to play a game of charades signaling food because the security guard kept shooing us away until he understood we were going to the restaurant. Upon arriving to the host stand upstairs there was no one to greet us for about five minutes. Once someone came, a nice lady found our reservation and took us to a table. I noticed she didn’t look at any of the reservation notes before seating us. I mention this because I work at a fine dining restaurant and we always check for special occasions, dietary restrictions, and seating preferences before seating. I’m very knit picky but I only say this because it was our 1 year anniversary and there was no acknowledgement of that at all in our dining experiences. Not that I want any special treatment but an acknowledgement goes a long way. The server was awesome, he never gave us a name but lots of cool tattoos and piercings. He gave us plenty of recommendations, was knowledgeable on the menu and kept our glasses full of water. My girlfriend and I decided we wanted to try as much as possible so we coursed out the evening with 2 snacks (kimchi dumplings & cheese plate), 2 starters (gem caesar & avocado tikka), 2 entrees (lasagna & udon noodles), and 2 desserts (coconut pie & hibiscus strawberry cheesecake.) The food overall was very satisfying. The favorites of what we had were the cheese plate, avocado tikka, spicy udon, and both desserts were outstanding. And to wrap this all up how am I not going to talk about the view! The view was amazing, and the ambiance was fantastic. Very clean, minimalist, and modern decor. Noise level was low but the tables are push really close together so you can hear the conversations of tables beside you even if they whisper. Last thing, they don’t have a liquor license so it is BYOB.

ALTHEA is a stunning display of what plant-based food can bring to fine dining. The service was impeccable. We were greeted warmly by the hostess, who also checked in once or twice with us during dinner. ALTHEA is BYOB, and they uncorked and poured our wine for us. We had the recommended appetizers and one of the recommended entrees as well. The Plant Bowl sounds simple enough, but it is cooked to perfection. The gnocchi was also more filling that the portion size originally looks. I was skeptical that I would leave ALTHEA hungry, but that was not the case. To top it off, make sure you get a dessert. Vegan desserts can sometimes be the trickiest part of a meal to get right, since conventional baking doesn't work without eggs or milk. ALTHEA has found ways to create amazing pies and cakes without animal products, and it's amazing. I left ALTHEA feeling encouraged about the future of plant based fine dining.

Delicious vegan food that even the committed burger-eaters among our party lived. The kimchee dumplings were particularly tasty. Service was charming and there are some wonderful views from the light and airy dining room. It’s made me think that being a vegan may not be so tough after all.

As a vegetarian, it is a wonderful feeling to be able to try every item of the menu instead of the usual 1 - 2 vegetarian options. Every dish was presented beautifully and was equally tasty. The kimchi dumplings are a wonderful take on a popular Korean street food. The spices found in the chickpea curry flavors put me in a happy place.

I’m excited to see what their cocktail menu looks like once they obtain their liquor license (it was BYOB when we went so please check).

For a party of 6, we spent $50/person without alcohol(BYOB) and I imagine that our bill would have been considerably higher once they begin serving alcoholic beverages.

I’m definitely looking forward to another visit to Althea in the future!

Great to find a high presentation plant based restaurant in Chicago. Staff was lovely. View and ambiance are modern and great. Some of the dishes were delicious, others good and beautifully presented but not at were level of the others. Prices are commensurate with lower end of fine dining.

Beautiful and delicious food, and gorgeous views of the city. Service was excellent. The restaurant itself is lovely, and many spots have great ambiance. But if you're facing the restaurant's entrance it's a bit less romantic, since you have a view of racks of men's clothes. (The restaurant is across from the menswear section of Saks.) Still, this hardly detracted from the overall experience, which was excellent.

We came as a recommendation from a friend because we wanted to dine at a vegan restaurant. I can honestly say that Althea’s food was the most flavorful, delicious food I have ever tasted...vegan or non vegan. The restaurant itself is beautiful with amazing views...and the service was friendly and prompt. We will definitely be going back...frequently!!

I am huge fan of culinary artistry and plating and the pictures on reviews about ALTHEA definitely caught my eye so I booked a table for a Friday night.
Believe me ALTHEA did NOT Disappoint.

The place is on the seventh floor on Saks 5 th Ave Building ,
The host promptly seated us at a table facing Michigan Ave , it had a Gorgeous view of the Drake !!
The place has a great ambience .
I got a blackberry sage mocktail and my friend got some tea
We ordered the house favorites after taking a quick look at the pictures
Each dish had a colorful and an eye catching appearance and it would only get better once in the mouth

Kimchi dumplings - Spectacular
Barbacoa Tacos - yumm
Avocado tikki with potato bread - simple and filling ( I think it’s inspired from a staple Indian meal chapati and yogurt)
Lasagna -layered zucchini and beefsteak tomatoes with ricotta is another blessing
Spicy Udon - it’s Ok ( not my fave , but my friend liked it )
Coconut creme dessert : fine but too sweet for me

Overall it’s definitely a 4 star experience
Highly recommended for a vegetarian date !!
They don’t have a liquor license yet .

The food is fresh, bright, at once familiar yet new and exciting. My only complaint is that the tables for two are so close together. I could hear every conversation going on next to me. On one side, two wealthy millennials were discussing jet skis in between discussing nothing at all. On the other, two exceptionally basic white guys of the Gen X persuasion were gaslighting former girlfriends and sending back food because it was too spicey even though the worst of them ordered an entree with “spicey” in the name. Having to listen to these interminable conversations marred what would have otherwise been an absolutely incredible culinary experience.

I am not a Vegan or a Vegetarian but my friend is. I had the tacos and I never would have known there was no meat in them! Every dish was more flavorful than the next...thank you for creating a menu for a friend who is used to being limited to 1 or 2 choices. To watch her scan the whole menu and struggle to make a decision on what to get because she had so many options was priceless. Thank you!

What a disappointment. I have eaten delicious vegan dishes before. Not here. I had the fake grilled cheese sandwich which was Very bland. No taste. Nothing else on the menu looked exciting. Also pricey. Only good part wS the cool looking waiter who had lots of piercings and tattoos. Too bad since I won’t be going back. For healthy food True Food is so much better.
