The food was amazing, but our server gave us an awkward experience. Took a while to greet us. I had to ask her as she walked past us for the 3rd or 4th time who our waiter was. She wasn’t very attentive and was very shy. We basically felt like we had to do the service for her.
When we received our appetizer, we had to wait an extra 5 mins to eat because we didn’t have silverware. She was nice, but it was our anniversary so it threw the vibe off just a lil.
We love the place, we will more than likely come back to eat there again. Food was amazing. Hopefully we get a seat by the window next time lol.
Absolutely incredible! The world needs more high end vegan options like this.
Friendly staff, quick service, beautiful city views, and INCREDIBLE food!!!
(4-star for ambience only because it’s in a department store. If it was open during the hours the store was open, it may be odd. But didn’t take away from our experience at all.)
Amazing vegan options for brunch! loved going here!
I'm thrilled that there's a plant-based restaurant in Chicago. And the ambience is not bad considering that it is within Saks. I just was expecting a much more interesting culinary experience. I've been cooking Purple Carrot and my home-cooked meals are more interesting and flavorful. I did love the kelp noodle cacio y pepe, but the cheese plate didn't excite me, the crab cake should just be titled what it's made of since real crab cake is so much different and usually tastier, and the risotto was very good but not exciting or interesting. The coconut cream pie was delicious, but the name or description should indicate that it's more of a bar than a slice of pie. I was surprised and not so delighted to get all of the dishes--starters and mains--at the same time. I enjoyed the service overall but I was out for a romantic dinner and was not in a rush.
Hands down, Althea is the best vegan restaurant in Chicago. The ambiance is great, the service is outstanding and the food is amazing.
Loved it. What a great vibe this place has. Excellent service.
I was really excited to dine here and booked a resi for my birthday dinner, wasn’t very special. The good notes: hostess was AMAZING and accommodating, the best part of the restaurant. I wish I got their name. Everything else: my drink had an ant in it. The food was bland all around, every course, so I skipped dessert on my birthday. We had the raved about cheese plate and it did not look like the photos, everything needed seasoning except one type of cheese. I got the spicy udon noodles and there was nothing spicy about it. My partner got the burger and it was dry, we weren’t able to ask for sauces because our server came to check in when we were nearly done. We just asked for the check and left. Wouldn’t recommend this place.
Nothing to recommend this restaurant. The food was uninspired. The service was inexperienced staff. Nice but not trained.
The experience was great the portions were not. The spicy noodles were not even close to any spice. We out to another place to eat right after. Not visiting again.
The barbacoa taco and the coconut cream pie were perhaps the most delicious foods I have ever eaten. Price was more than we normally spend, but it was wonderful for a special night out.
Great plantbase meals! Smaller portions but the right size. Everything was delicious!
Everything was really good; from drinks to dessert. It’s hard to find a vegan place for foodies and this is probably the closest we’ve come to vegan fine dining since the green zebra closed. We appreciate there was no attempt to imitate meat. The crab cakes and asparagus appetizers really stood out. The cocktails were also really tasty and interesting. Minor issue with getting dessert spoons in a timely fashion and the ice creams were good but nothing
Props for the excellent signage (who would think to find a vegan restaurant at the top of sacks 5th Avenue?) and the ambiance is great, you don’t even realize your in a shopping center.
We had to wait a long time to order food. While we were very patient the first time, it kept happening. We had to wait after every course. I wish the servers communicated in advance/ We would have adjusted our expectations accordingly
Loved food, service and everything 🌱✨
Amazing spot for vegan brunch!
Our waitress was amazing! She was very attentive and helped us plan the rest of our vacation. It was great!
Amazing vegan food! The best tacos, lasagna, udon noodles & banana cream pie in the city. Service was great & server was delightful. The tequila cocktails were delicious! Can't wait to return.
Our first visit and it was delicious.
We had crab cakes and barbacoa tacos. Loved them both.
Will be visiting again the next time we are in town.
Such a fun and inviting atmosphere. Food was delishious and the drinks were tasty. Def coming back again.
Was looking for a healthy plant based menu for my father’s birthday dinner and Althea was amazing. The dishes were perfect! The wine list is limited and it is a bit awkward having to flag down a security guard as the restaurant is located on the 7th floor of Sak’s Fifth Avenue so difficult to enter after the department store has closed but we had a great meal.
This is supposed to be an “upscale” vegan restaurant but it was far from that. The table we sat at was against a wall that hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. It had several spills on it and was pretty gross. All the food we had lacked seasoning. The only tasty thing we tried were the complimentary bite sized scones.
The kitchen was too backed up so we couldn't even dine here. They said we would be waiting 1.5 hours to be served. Very disappointing!
We had an amazing experience at Althea. The asparagus appetizer I'll remember for a long time. The food was fresh, light and so delicious. Great flavors, great combinations. We've had vegan ricotta before but nothing that was so light and rich as in the lasagna. It was a fresh and light take on lasagna and we loved it. Also my wife and I don't drink, and we both loved our N/A cocktails. Overall great experience.
Excellent food. Excellent service. Would highly recommend.
The food portions were great, food delicious, our server -Zoe- was charming & attentive. Overall, a wonderful dining experience!
Excellent mix of flavors. The vegan cheese plate was amazing, as was the vegan cheesecake.
Great vegan food and has good level of spices unlike other vegan places I’ve been to.
Food was amazing but waitress did not know what the kitchen had, so my date wasn’t able to order what she wanted. We had to watch 3 other tables eat what she wanted.
70th birthday party
Fabulous food, service and ambience
I’m not a vegan so I went into this with a low bar. I was pleasantly surprised. The tacos and crab cakes were delicious. The toast flight is a lot of good but worth it. This was their all day Sunday brunch menu so I will go back for their dinner. The desserts, especially the cheesecake, was very good. I could have eaten more but I was full. It’s the type of full where I didn’t feel weighed down. Great spot.
There's no better place in Chicago for raw vegans to experience haute cuisine. The location of the restaurant is great, with views of Michigan Avenue, ideal if you can get seated next to a window. We had lunch here to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday, she's gluten-free and wanted to order the burger but was told that Althea did not offer gluten-free burgers because there are no good gluten-free buns available, which isn't true, gluten-free bread has come a long way, you can find great burger buns almost anywhere ==and if they disagree, I recommend they make their own. Our food took so long that they offered us complimentary scones, unfortunately, they were not gluten-free, so the birthday girl went hungry. However, I must say she was very happy with the raw lasagna she ordered, once it arrived. The food was great except for my white bean soup, it was bland, I was disappointed, there was no hint of rosemary which was why I ordered it in the first place. The cocktails are top, you can go there just for cocktails and will never be let down. Overall I love eating at Althea and would recommend to vegans and none vegans.
Delicious and creative plant based food! Highly recommend!
While the restaurant did comp most of our meal because of the poor experience, I would not recommend this restaurant to friends. Other Mathew Kinney restaurants we've been to are amazing, but this was far from that.
Amazing food. Request a table by the windows to get the view.
Drinks are not anything special.
Delicious and inventive vegan eats!
So happy to see a thriving planted based restaurant here in Chicago! Good food, nice variety, and nice views from the 7th floor!
As we were really excited to eat here and had one of the first reservations of the day. Our waiter disappeared alot. We had budgeted 1.5 hours for lunch but ended up being almost 3 hours due to the fact that we couldn't find our server. Also asked many others for help and didn't get any. The food was amazing. Just really distracted staff.
Althea is a fantastic restaurant. The food quality is outstanding, staff is friendly, and the view and ambiance are very beautiful and pleasant. I highly recommend this place for a a romantic dinner, or a fun brunch with friends.
One of the best meals and dining experience I’ve had in ages!
