ALTHEA is bringing the future of food to Saks Fifth Ave Chicago under the direction of renowned celebrity chef and plant-based pioneer, Matthew Kenney. The restaurant offers a diverse variety of organic, globally-inspired and thoughtfully-sourced ingredients, with the menu including fresh intrepretations of traditional dishes alongside some of Kenney's namesake classics. Located on the 7th floor of Saks Fifth Ave across from the Mens Lounge, we serve innovative, beautiful plant cuisine, as well as an extensive biodynamic cocktail, beer and wine program.

What a disappointment. I have eaten delicious vegan dishes before. Not here. I had the fake grilled cheese sandwich which was Very bland. No taste. Nothing else on the menu looked exciting. Also pricey. Only good part wS the cool looking waiter who had lots of piercings and tattoos. Too bad since I won’t be going back. For healthy food True Food is so much better.

Amazing plant based cuisine. Healthy, filling and tasty there is not much to complain about. Chicago needs more restaurants like Althea.

Really Really enjoyed our dinner at Althea. Not very easy to find if you're not familiar with the store and don't look into how to get there before you arrive. Once you do find it the Barbacoa Tacos & the Kimchi Dumplings are a must. My wife had the Udon noodles and loved them. I had the Kelp Noodle Cacio E Pepe and thought it was a very creative take on the dish. Flavors were incredible, just wished it was a warm dish. We didn't really save room for desert but still ordered the Coconut Banana Cream Pie and it was delish!!

To begin, I am not a vegetarian, but my guest is, so I chose Althea. The waiter had so much metal on his face and tattoos on his arms, it was a turn off. My guest enjoyed the food, I didn't. I ordered the lasagna, which was not what I expected. It was served cold and there weren't any noodles, but there were slices of zucchini. which were raw. The hummus was good and the flat bread excellent. But overall, unless you are a devoted vegan or vegetarian I wouldn't go to Althea

Super-friendly staff and inventive food. Ordered the little gem salad but received the kale salad, which was okay. I'd go back. The bartender was cool.

Good experience, kindly mention lack of libations vs press & company site info. 2nd visit, same menu as 3 months ago, but overall much more polished & smooth experience.

Great dining experience, if people had issues in the past with the service then ALTHEA had definitely fixed them prior to our visit. Creative, beautiful, and delicious food, the server was attentive and informative, and the ambiance was perfect for celebrating our 3 year anniversary. Only downside was they still didn't have a liquor license, but I appreciated the hostess calling to inform us about that ahead of time. Oh, and we really appreciated the special dessert they made for us for our anniversary. We will definitely return the next time we're in Chicago!

Delicious food and great service! The barbacoa tacos and gnocchi were favorite dishes. Desserts (tiramisu and apple pie) were good as well.

Althea is the best high end vegan restaurant in Chicago, bar none. Granted, there is not much competition in that space since closing of the Green Zebra, but the restaurant provides fun amazing delicious creative dishes for vegan, non-vegan, foodie and explorer alike.

It’s always so nice to walk into Althea and not worry about any animal derived products. I think that the wait staff could use a little more knowledge about the menu.

This is an outstanding addition to the restaurant scene in Chicago, especially for those looking for vegetarian/vegan options. My family and I recently dined there for the first time and really enjoyed our meals. We ordered several different items and everyone sampled each one. We found the food to be inventive, interesting, and tasty. The menu is not just a selection of well-know vegan items, it contains unique dishes. The food is fresh, well prepared, and beautifully presented. The fact that it is on top of the Saks department store takes away from the otherwise nice setting. This is only a small issue. We will definitely go back for more meals.

Having dined 3 times at Plant Food + Wine in Venice recently my expectations were sky-high. Disappointingly only 3 of the 7 dishes we ordered came even close. Two of us ordered the gnocchi main and the plating inconsistencies were obvious. The dishes were lacking in depth of flavor and there was a bitter, vinegary taste to 3 of the them. We wondered if there was a chef tasting the dishes before they the kitchen. The staff were trying their absolute best but the location in addition to the inconsistent food makes this a hard sell. It seems Chicago hasn’t been given the needed Plant based dining from Matthew Kenney I’ve been hoping for. Be aware they don’t yet have a liquor license and you can’t BYOB

I only have beautiful things to say about Althea. First of all the quality of the service is really great, all the employees are super nice, friendly and well informed about the menu. I had a great experience.
The food .. amazing quality. For sure it’s not a cheap restaurant to eat but you get what you pay for. Organic ingredients and an amazing plant based gourmet experience.
I loved everything I ate from starter to dessert. Highly recommended.

Delicious and impeccably-plated dishes served by an attentive and relatable staff. This is a gem. The dinner and dessert options were spectacular. As a gluten-free and vegan patron, it was wonderful to have multiple choices -- and all the desserts were gluten-free as well. We were lucky to be able to enjoy complimentary beverages on our visit, too.

Had a wonderful Valentine's Day dinner here, the pre-fixe menu was very delicious and filling. So glad they got their liquor license, the chocolate and coffee cocktail I got was out of this world, I highly recommend this place for a fancy night out whether you're vegan or not!

Food was delicious! Went there for Valentines Day and they had a special menu. Everything tasted great! We will definitely go back. We both want to try everything on the menu. Also, the service was very good!

I ate here before n gave 4 stars — even tho it only deserved 3, because I want them to succeed n stay here. I was so excited about an upscale vegan restaurant nearby! But how many bad reviews about service do they need before they decide to train their staff?? We came for our lunch hour n tho we were the ONLY diners most of that time, our server never was seen, n showed up so intermittently that we were there almost 2 hours. Couldn’t the staff stay on the floor, eyes ahead to be reached? We had the restaurant week menu. All dishes were beautifully presented. My friend started with the taco, which she said was excellent. I started with carrot soup which was nothing special n bland— a frequent complaint here. My kale salad entree was great, her pizza was just ok. My sorbet was too icy, her cake was fine.
The same woman as last visit flitted around greeting the diners, but did nothing to get the servers to pay attention to their tables. I intend to try one more time, then I give up.

The kimchi dumplings were delicious and beautiful, as was the Kung Pao cauliflower. The butternut squash was disappointingly heavy and lacked flavor. Chickpea curry was soupy and ordinary, although the accompanying flatbread was good. Overall, the food was okay, but not spectacular. And this was an uncrowded, early lunch. The service was attentive and very good. Prices are far too high.

Was so excited about an upscale vegan restaurant -- and right near work! Very pretty room just off the elevator inside Saks. Started with the cashew raclette n was very disappointed. The raclette was rather bland, the so-called salad was just a couple sprigs -- and the bread was burned! Surely the chef would have seen that n re-toasted it? The host came by to ask how I liked my meal n when I told her about it she just smiled n walked away. Couldn't she have brought more toast? Then I had the plant bowl as my entree, and it was very good. But I was expecting spectacular! Still have high hopes, n plan to return -- I'm sure I just got there on an off day.

It was super good food, it was fun, and it was very unique in terms of ambience! Would recommend it to anyone interested in plant-based vegan food but that was more formal than the usual vegan plant based restaurants!

I had read other reviews about poor service and boy they were right. When we were first seated there were 3 people helping our table, but then they all seemed to disappear. I ordered a hot tea and it was quickly dropped off at the table . Then it took me 10min to flag someone down to ask for “milk” and sugar.
My menu was missing the beverage page so I was unaware of the non-alcoholic offerings . I ordered the Kung Pao cauliflower it was on the bland side with a sweet ? Sauce , but no spicy or salty balance.
When it came to ordering deserts we were not offered coffee and waited 20 min for our pies to be plated. The pumpkin cardamom pie was delicious while the apple was inedible. The pumpkin crust had so much rice flower it tasted like the crumbs left over at the bottom of your Kashi cereal box.
My party was even more surprised to see the $20 charge for water ( didn’t have the beverage page to see they were charging $6 a glass for sparkling water)
My party of 3 was splitting the bill so we had some cash and 2 cards. I told the server the amount for 1 card and then said to put the balance on the other. He came back with the cash, and had put the requested amount on the first card and then just ran the second for everything else.
Great place if you have time for a 90min lunch with so so food.
If you need to eat vegan on Michigan ave head across the street to the Pininsula for the Vegan high tea
