This place is great. Atmosphere is great. Service is wonderful. Great experience.
Quality of the food in this restaurant is above all I’ve been to. My sun insisted that I take a bite of his burger cause he thought it’s was the best he ever had. He was right, fries were good too. Other dishes were all top notch. We had a great time.
The service at Alter House was excellent. The beet salad and bread were also wonderful. The capellini first course was cooked a little too soft for our taste. The soft shell crab sandwich was huge but the batter coating had a bitter taste. My husband’s chicken entree was also quite large but the thigh was undercooked. We would try Alter House again if the noise level wasn’t so loud. It was uncomfortably loud and the restaurant wasn’t even full.
Bar service was extremely slow and there were only 10 people I the bar and restaurant combined
Need a different curtain between the dinning area than those plants. Suggest the same screening that is in the dinning room.
I absolutely loved the feel of the place, the food makes my mouth water just thinking about. I took my sister who is a picky eater, it was a little too adventurous for her so I’d say you need to be open to trying new vegetables, new combinations, etc. I’m vegetarian myself so can’t speak for the meat but I’ve loved every part of my experiences at this restaurant. Food worth it, service excellent, grass wall REAL, jazzy/classy/yet casual vibe. A 70 year old man was wearing glitter shoes at the bar one time I went- I don’t think this man would go somewhere he thought was meh. Glitter shoe approved.
From the greeting to our last sip of coffee everything was top notch. Our food was exquisite, and the cocktails outstanding. Service was well paced and friendly with wonderful suggestions.
Very unique atmosphere, excellent service and delicious cuisine. I highly recommend for an adult evening out.
The food was excellent. Not sure how much was actually farm to table but I guess it's how you define farm to table. NEPA doesn't really have a long growing season. Everything was cooked perfectly. The selection is a nice balance with the items having enough twists to put them beyond basic but without trying too much. They should consider doing lower price take out meals and delivery.
Wedding anniversary dinner on a Wednesday evening. Obviously this is their slow night and we got the impression that some new staff were being trained. Chronologically: The bar and bar stock was good. Bar tender was friendly and attentive. We had mixed appetizer plate at the bar. A little bland but OK. At the table: one main course plate was quite good. The other main course of gnocchi was abysmal in both content and quality. Confusion also arose regarding who exactly was serving us, so a couple of our requests were either forgotten or overlooked. General atmosphere / ambiance throughout was very good even, though it was relatively quiet and mid week. Overall a bit disappointing for a first try but would perhaps consider giving it one more go, but maybe not on a mid week night and hopefully when all staff have completed their training.
Ehhh the food really wasn’t that great. It was just ok.
Everything about our experience at the Alter House was top notch. The menu was unique and we loved that both the drink menu and the food options were created with locally sourced items. Every single thing we tried was delicious. But I have to say that the standout from the evening was the wait staff. They were professional, kind, knowledgeable and perfectly seamless. We felt catered to and cared for, but never “hovered over”. It was a truly great first experience, but it surely will not be our last.
Meal was a lovely escape from our usual places, but timing between courses could be improved. Nonetheless, they had a creative and inspired menu and overall great service!
Have been looking forward to trying Alter House for a long time and dined there with two companions. We were very excited about the seasonal menu, something that is hard to find in the area. Unfortunately, the creativity of the menu on paper did not come through in the food. Quality of dishes was wildly uneven, and it seemed as if there was no one even checking them for quality control before they left the kitchen.
The space is nice, but very loud, even only a third full. Service was good. Cocktails were pretty good but two of the three were cloyingly sweet.
Clams and herbs: clams were fine, but herbs were lacking. A few stems of wilted parsley, but the thyme advertised was not visibly or taste-wise apparent.
Octopus: Nice sized piece of Octopus, cooked and seasoned well. But the "caramelized" Kohlrabi advertised was not caramelized in the slightest-- it was steamed and unseasoned. Not pleasant.
Baby Kale salad: very good, and nicely dressed.
We shared a mid-course of the asparagus risotto, which was disappointing. Rice was clumpy and not presented nicely. Taste was ok. But Risotto should not be big scoops of dry rice.
Scallops: Bright spot of the meal. Beautifully seared and seasoned.
Halibut: Fish was overcooked and bland. Romanesco advertised on menu as part of the dish was not there. For the first time in my life I actually asked for a salt shaker to give the dish seasoning it seriously lacked. The Buerre Blanc was tasteless as well, which is hard to do with a Buerre Blanc. Definitely not worth the outrageous price of 36 dollars.
Gnocchi with Lobster: Lobster was tough and had an acrid taste. The Fava beans advertised were not present. Gnocchi were really bland, as was the broth.
I told our server about the various issues when she realized I wasn't happy with my entree. She apologized, which I appreciated, but that was the only recourse. Nothing was taken off the check or comped. Very disappointing experience for the money.
Spectacular! First time there and will definitely go again.
An excellent dining experience. My husband and I were looking for a nice location to have a special dinner and this was it.
The food was amazing. All the personnel were helpful and interested in making sure that we had a pleasant experience.
Overall menu very good, great insight and combinations of ingredients. Octopus was out of this world, lamb chops were good but could’ve used a little salt and pepper but the beans and fiddle heads it came with were great. Cheesecake was ok but the Cara Cara components it came with were great. The peanut butter chiffon pie with hazelnut crust was things dreams are made of. My mom loved her scallop piccata. Brother had the hangar steak which he said was good, I tasted it and thought it was good, too. Would I go back, absolutely.
Hostess Trish was so accommodating and our waiter was Patrick. He was very courteous and knowledgeable.
This place is so nice! Modern, sleek, open kitchen cool staff, fantastic food, i was so surprised. A great newcomer to the area. Beautiful full bar w impressive wine lust, changing menu and desserts!

This restaurant was absolutely beautiful and the food was perfect I will definitely go back many times in the future
Thank you for the five star review! We are so happy you enjoyed your evening. We look forward to seeing you again soon!
Having dined at Alter House several times I can say that the variety of appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts we've had were not only superbly prepared, but always beautifully presented. Our servers were friendly and helpful, and never intrusive. The sommelier who helped my wife select just the right wine was engaging, a natural "educator" who was enthusiastic about helping her make the right choice. The food? Where do I start in sharing our complete delight with this experience? First of all, my wife and I are very health conscious and maintain our respective college-days weight by eating carefully, and when we go out we prefer going to places where the chef has similar ideas about what it means to eat well. The Alter House chef performs his miracles by working with (obviously) the best ingredients, so there is apparently no need to cover everything with too much onion, too much garlic, too much heavy breading, overpowering sauces, etc. Through ingenious combinations of ingredients, as well as creative (and discreet) use of herbs and spices the chef comes up with dishes in which one enjoys the actual taste of the food - in all its natural glory. And I don't mean that the food is bland. It is "alive" with taste, and every bite seems more satisfying than the one before. A completely satisfying experience.
My family and I enjoyed a wonderful meal at Alter House this weekend. They offer unique cocktails and food in an equally unique atmosphere. The grilled octopus was outstanding! A welcome alternative!
The octopus is certainly a guest favorite! Thank you for your kind review and we are thrilled you enjoyed your evening out. Please come join us again soon!
Fantastic girls night only made better by the best waitress ever, Kim!!
Thank you for the wonderful review! Kim is great, we agree! Please come visit us again soon.
As always, an outstanding evening. The chef deserves an award for creativity.
Such kind words. Thank you so very much! We look forward to seeing you again soon!
This is a great place, don't get me wrong by the stars, I'm hoping we were just there on an off night. So let's start with the good. Drink menu is awesome and the bartenders are very capable. The ambiance is pretty great and everything works. And the food was pretty good. We had an 8pm seating so I'm gonna say the kitchen was getting tired and that's the reason everything was just good and not great. First thing that put me off was there's a "bar menu" that has items that can only be ordered at the bar and a separate dinner menu. This despite the bar and the main dining area pretty much being the same thing as the place isn't that big. So when we asked for something we saw on the "bar menu" that request was presented to a higher power who declined it. Apparently this higher power also doesn't allow the servers into the kitchen and seems to have a weird "i'm always busy even when it's not that busy" vibe that at this point in my life always turns me off at restaurants. 2nd thing was my risotto was soupy and under cooked. This isn't something that would be tolerated in Old Forge and we had to drive past Old Forge to get to this place. I think I'll save myself some time next time and just go to Cafe Rinaldi next time. Last complaint was not only were we not allowed to order from the "bar menu" but several of the things we wanted off the main menu they didn't have. It was a Saturday night, and apparently they aren't open Sunday or Monday so I guess they under-ordered for the week, but when you try and order 2 different things only to be told they don't have them, that's a little frustrating. For the price I was expecting more. I would try it again maybe but average pricey food mixed with modern art and fancy light fixtures isn't enough to make me want to rush back.
atmosphere was great- sophisticated cozy. food delicious and reasonable portions. wine list incredible. service top notch.
Thank you fo taking the time to leave us this wonderful review. Please come back and visit us again soon!
My first unpleasant experience was with the sommelier, Patrick, who was doubling up as a waiter. He started the evening by making a bigoted comment about "the Irish" (guess he didn't know I am one). The manager who served us was lovely. The hostess was creepy and came to the table WAY too frequently. The food: loved the salad, the salmon was disappointing and desert was very good. The worst part of the evening was walking out and smelling a REALLY strong sewage odor. I'd go back, but i'd never suggest it to anyone.
Hello. Addressing sewage smell. Unfortunately earlier an older couple kindly admitted to backing into one of our clean out pipes on property. Do to time of day we were unable to get a repair company out but it was fixed first thing come morning. I'm sure you understand things break and I hope you won't hold that against us. I have limited word usage, many questions & need to address everything. Would you please email us at hello@summitalterhouse or call 570.319.6665. Please ask for management.
The service we had was exceptional. Food is not your ordinary food but if you are willing to try different things, this is the place.
Thank you so much! We do hope you come back and join us again soon!
Desserts are the weakest link here - neither were very good (donuts - too nutty; cheesecake too dry) . Salmon entree was tasty as was the beet salad. Husband really liked the porcini mushroom app. Beet risotto entree would be better served as a side or an app, but it was quite good and lighter than other risottos so you didn’t feel sluggish afterwards. Drinks were on point, but a touch on the small side. Eric makes a mean cocktail. Overall it was a lovely evening with good service and good food.
While we are sad to hear you didn't enjoy your dessert we are thrilled your apps, salads, entrees, and cocktails were delightful. Please come back and visit us again soon so we may give you a five star dining experience you deserve!
First time here and what a gem! Beautiful warm ambiance, friendly and attentive staff, creative dishes and presentation. Mushroom cavatelli app was delicious. Bibb lettuce salad awesome especially with added blue cheese crumbles suggested by our server! Fire grilled pork chop very tasty. Braised short ribs fork tender and tasty but sauce over powered it and was poured over everything instead of just on the meat. Citrus pana cotta was light and delicious to end our meal. We prefer to bring our own wine which was graciously permitted with a $15 corkage fee. But the Burnt Orange Old Fashioned was simply delightful to start the evening. Nora our server was awesome and the hostHayden delightful.
The food and service were outstanding even for a very busy night. I had the scallop dinner and my wife the salmon and we both loved them. Chef Michael's sauces were great!
Food options were great with fun seasonal offerings. The food quality is top tier and I would go back again.
We’re foodies with a traditionalist lean. The vision, the presentation, the ingredients, the style: all great. The taste: disappointing. Mixed drinks, while made with what seemed like the perfect combo of ingredients, were cloyingly sweet. The appetizers, for us the highlight of the food, were delicious, but primarily because the artisan ingredients were delicious, the parts of them that were made in house weren’t very interesting. The entres, again, wonderfully conceived, were either too sweet or too bland. Disappointing. The wine was excellent, obviously the product of a talented sommelier. The service, and particularly our waitress, Nora, was exceptional. Alter House Kitchen and Bar, please up your game. You’re so close! Alter House Sommelier and Wait Staff, bravo!
This is my favorite new restaurant ! Love everything about it
This was the second time we’d dined at Alter House. We were in the “private” room. We were a party of 11 and there was another party of 20 at two tables. The noise was dreadful, How any one could BUILD a new restaurant and not take noise into account is beyond me. I doubt I’ll ever return. The service was slow to the point of absurdity. We brought a professionally made and presented cake to celebrate a birthday. IT HAD “HAPPY BIRTHDAY” AND CANDLES ON IT. Our meal was over. We waited nearly half a hour expecting the cake to be brought out before we had to ask for it. THE SERVER BROUGHT CUT PEICES OF CAKE BEFORE WE SANG HAPPY BIRTHDAY. Unbelievably STUPID! Oh I almost forgot, the food, it was okay. Dining out is about the ambience, service and food. All three need to be (at least) good for the experience to be enjoyable. Alter House fell far short of the mark.
Food was excellent! My husband and i had beet salad with ricotta, very good!! I had the special, Black Bass, also very good. It was served with turnips which are a pretty bland side dish. My husband’s short ribs were very tender. We did not have dessert. The wines suggested by the chef were the perfect pairings. It was not very busy on a Wednesday evening. I’m sure there is quite a crowd on weekends!
I love this restaurant; we have eaten there many times. The service is great, the bar is well stocked. My ONLY complaint, is that the portions are very small for the price (except for the Pork!)
This was our second time eating here. It was quiet due to the cold weather. Everything was good, nice server, tasty food, except we were the only ones there when placing our order and it took well over a half hour to receive our dinners (a medium rare burger and risotto dish)if it were busy I’d understand but it was not.
The service was outstanding-very attentive folks. Food was beautifully presented. The charcuterie board was delightful.
This was a great night all the way around. My husband had the roasted chicken that he said was very tender and delicious. My pork chop was perfectly prepared and the accompanying vegetables were perfectly done. My son had the Jail Island salmon that he said was done exactly right. The rolls are homemade gluten free and so delicious. I’d cone back just for the rolls. The bar had a great vibe. The place was spotlessly clean and the hostess was so friendly and cared about the comfort of their patrons.
