Outstanding!! The home baked rye bread perfectly complimented the herring and smoked fish appetizers. The wood smoked chicken (with pickled dates) and the broccoli/red peppers were wonderfully cooked. Wish I had room for dessert. Service was excellent. Accommodating to special requests/allergies. Very comfortable and an excellent meal. We got lucky on parking, which could be a challenge.
Delicious food and really friendly service. A great break from LA’s endless supply of Italian restaurants!
I invited a Danish friend of mine to join me for brunch. We loved that it was quiet enough to have a lovely conversation, that the music was appropriate and not night music. The design is warm and the staff is very friendly. We asked to meet the chef/owner and he came out to speak with us and was wonderful. We loved that the food was traditional using premium ingredients prepared all on site. The plating was good and ordering multiple plates since the portions were small would be appropriate. This is a nice place to be introduced to Scandinavian cuisine with no pretense of intimidation. I liked that it was warm and authentic.
One of the best meals I've had in LA. Highly recommend and will be back again very soon.
Great food and a culinary journey
Charming Nordic cuisine. Well done.
Amazing meal and incredibly service, can't recommend Alta enough!
Food was delicious. Staff very friendly. Will return again!
Best Swedish Pancakes outside of Sweden! Light and delicious! The gravlax , smoked salmon and Pate was delicious and perfect size to share. Eggs and salmon, hit the spot . The homemade rye bread and toast were so good I saved s piece to have for breakfast the next day at home! Great fresh coffee and lingonberry Sangria Too! We love this place !
Came here because of the reviews, but was not thrilled. We were the last table to be seated at 9:30 p.m. on a Saturday and it was empty. They were out of the meatballs(?), and ordered the Salmon (Lax), Shrimp (Skagen) and Cod. We felt like the staff was rushing to leave so skipped dessert. Not bad, but did not live up to hype.
Simply amazing food!!! Super fresh Nordic Cuisine! Dinner Friday night, went back for Brunch and Swedish Pancakes on Sunday! Delicious both times!
Excelente comida, muy bien preparados todos lo platos la calidad en linea con el precio
Excellent Scandinavian food from a very excellent chef who worked at Aquavit in New York.
The meatballs and apple dessert were especially wonderful. I wish he would put a duck dish on the menu!
We sat at the bar to watch the chef cook and assemble the dishes, and hoped to have a short conversation with him as well. He was very warm and welcoming and the food was outstanding! Everything is simple, high quality and unique, from the gravlax to the special sea bass grilled on a delicious smelling wood fired stove using almond or oak wood. We'll be back!!
The service was wonderful. The food was very good. I didn't know much about Scandinavian food. The server did a great job explaining things and suggesting things. I'm a bit picky on wine and the server brought me 2-3 to taste without me asking for that, and I really appreciated that extra effort. The food was delicious (I'm not much of a seafood person, but I loved this) and came out fresh and hot. The only downside was it's a bit pricey. The other thing that I didn't care for was when the check was brought it it was explained to me there was a 16% surcharge added for the kitchen staff and this didn't include the server tip. The server did a great job so I felt obligated to add a 15% tip for the server. Even though everything was great, the price of the food plus 30% service charge (this was for a party of 2) just seems way out of line. Perhaps they should consider making the surcharge be 20% and split it up or something like that? I'm not sure the solution, but I didn't like finding out about this after the fact. Perhaps I should have researched it better.
Wonderful Nordic cuisine in a relaxed setting. A great neighborhood gem!
Fantastic seafood. Service was amazing. Great wine selections with very reasonable prices. Gravlax and toast was to die for!!
It was an ok dining experience but i would not recommend it to anyone because there are so many better restaurants in LA for the same price point or cheaper. We went on a Saturday night and half the tables were empty.
Our second visit here and as before the food quite good and service excellent, but this time there was a mandatory 16% service charge which the server informed us "goes to the house" so any server gratuity must be added on top of that. I normally tip 20% but wasn't about to pay a total of 36% service charge so left less for the hard working server.
we had a wonderful dinner and will be looking to come back!
Great food. Fun, reasonably priced wine list. Everyone is super friendly. Definitely check it out!
What a special addition to the Los Angeles restaurant scene. An authentic, unpretentious gourmet restaurant with a world class Swedish chef preparing great, gourmet food. Wonderful ingredients, lovingly prepared and presented, in a cozy, warm, intimate environment.
Very delicious! The tuna tartar, Swedish meatballs, chicken, roasted salmon and brisket are all delicious!
If you want great food and a quieter restaurant, Alta is a good choice. I like supporting neighborhood restaurants.
Wonderful experience! Staff was friendly and helpful with the different food items.
I have fond memories of Swedish dinners around Christmas. I didn't know how much I had missed, until I enjoyed a Christmas Eve meal at Alta Nordic Kitchen!
Delicious and authentic Swedish cuisine in a warm and tasteful setting.
It was such a warm and inviting space. It felt elevated and yet remained causual. The food was just what I want in food. Comforting and just good without being frilly.
This is one of my Favorite Restaurants in Los Angeles. The best interior that creates a certain cozy comfortable welcoming feeling. This is not often found in Los Angeles. The foods are simply delightful and delicious. The Gravlax is the best i have ever had. The homemade toast points and served with a lovely honey mustard ~ but the star is the most divine gravlax salomon anyone could ever eat! Seriously, the texture is butter and the flavor of freshest salmon straight off a boat. I thought about this for days after. Then we had a lovely calves liver pate with homemade rye toast. Just the perfect texture with the rye toast, just heaven . The wood fired free range chicken is so juicy, tender flavorful bites that make you want to devour fast! Haha. Brined for two days and the slight wood flavor from the grill make this my favorite dish. We also shared the typical nordic dish of short rib hash that was melt in your mouth perfect, served with an egg cooked perfectly to bring the dish together is just another star of this most creative menu! Couldn’t get enough of these dishes. Too full for desserts ~ but happily finished our lovely pinot noir in this lovely restaurant. Service was excellent and all the staff from Sweden. Such a special evening at Alta Nordic Kitchen. I am coming back for their christmas dinner special feast running through christmas eve!
Great food - we enjoyed the Jul holiday meal - the best
What a MagicaL Holiday Feast. We went to Alta Nordic Kitchen specifically for their Traditional Holiday Christmas feast .
It is delightful. Please try and go to experience chef Christer creating holiday masterpieces from his country.
Started with a lovely pinot noir wine. Next we were served lovely appetizer plate consisting of the pork pate with mustard sauce with lovely earthy rye bread, old world recipe. Salmon Gravlax with house made honey mustard was epic, i could not stop eating this. The beet salad was sweet/sour and just perfect. The cold chilled shrimp on toast points was melt in your mouth fresh sweet perfectly dressed baby shrimp. I could just eat that for dinner. Smoked salmon roll stuffed with horseradish cream melted in my mouth. Herring had the perfect pickle. Also a typical nordic cheese melted in your mouth. This was all presented incredibly neat on a small appetizer plate. Very filling, and content at this point we drank more wine and then Dinner came! Haha the appetizer was dinner, now excited to see the rest unfold.
I ordered the traditional Ham that was rolled and sliced thin and loaded with amazing flavor and portion size again large.
Served with perfectly long braised red cabbage sweet and sour perfection. Swedish veal meatballs disappeared before i realized it was me who ate them all.. so so so good everything is, was, will be! The salmon pudding was heaven light fluffy texture ~ dinner was memorable. Then desert came!! Normally i am too full to order..but the treats were the treat ~ THE RICE PUDDING; rice pudding creamy cold goodness and hint of spices that pared perfect with the fruit salad that was just delicious ... how did Christer make a normal fruit salad taste like it was fit for a queen, i don’t know but its the best i ever had.
To top a perfectly delicious pre holiday dinner with spiced warm Glogg wine was just the icing on the very best dining evening.
It was the best Glogg spiced wine I ever had! ✨✨✨
Really delicious. Loved the herring and the fish stew. What a great change from Italian, Italian, Italian!
Scandinavian Cuisine at it's best! I highly recommend Alta Nordic Kitchen.
Loved this restaurant! Food was beautifully presented and delicious. Service was attentive.
Only thing we didn't like was the "service charge" but not enough of a deterrent to stop us from going back.
We loved the food, our waitress helped us with food selections as we were not familiar with some items. The only problem we had was the % added on to our bill to “ pay for employee benefits”, this money does not go directly to the wait staff. If you want to tip, you have to add that on top of the bill...we will not be back
Great Scandinavian cuisine in a Melrose environment
This is a most fantastic addition to the emerging Renaissance of Melrose - don’t miss it - the food is amazing and the space and service superb. Total Nordic comfort food
Definitely different than your average dining experience to have high end Scandinavian food. Highly recommend trying it for something different. Hope it lasts longer than Smoke.oil.salt.
A great take on Scandinavian food. Fresh, elegant and tasty.
Really great restaurant. Loved the food and the service was excellent. Highly recommend.
I just adore this restaurant. Every dish is outstanding, so fresh and tasty! I love this place!
