Disappointing Experience Despite Great Ambience and Service Start We came in with high expectations for this restaurant, especially given its reputation and setting. The ambience was beautiful, and the service started off strong—our bartender made excellent drinks, and we were seated at a prime location in the restaurant. Unfortunately, the experience quickly went downhill from there. I ordered the French onion soup, which lacked seasoning and depth. For a French restaurant, I’d rate it a 2 out of 5. We also ordered the beef tenderloin, which was overcooked—it came out well-done instead of the medium we requested. The biggest letdown was the mussels. I specifically asked if they were BC mussels before ordering and was assured they were. When they arrived, it was clear they were not BC mussels. I asked again at the end of the meal and was told they “threw a couple BC mussels in,” but the rest were from PEI. That kind of misrepresentation is unacceptable and left a bad taste—literally and figuratively. My wife also had the bone marrow, which was underwhelming and lacked the rich flavor we were expecting. Overall, despite a great start with atmosphere and drinks, the food quality and honesty about the menu items were very disappointing. We won’t be returning.

This restaurant is located on Hornsby St, in the Hotel Le Soleil. It’s a very beautiful space with high ceilings, wood flooring, and a very interesting light fixture over the center of the space. I got there just after it opened so it was empty. Chloe was my server. I started with a double Monkey 47 gin and tonic ($28.50CAD), and ordered Bone Marrow ($24), and Duck Cassoulet with foie gras ($59). Along the way, I had another Monkey 47 G&T and finished with an Americano ($6). The bone marrow came with four pieces of toasted baguette, and some Shimeji mushrooms and pickled onion. It was so unctuous and delicious! The cassoulet was rich, with confit duck, sausage, lardon, and some vegetables. The foie gras add-on ($20) took the dish over the top. This was a fabulous first meal ($156.13CAD + tip) in Vancouver … I loved everything!

Came here with no expectations. Food was really high quality. Drinks were delicious. What really stood out was the manager coming to our table a few times to check in and make sure everything was perfect. Nice touch. Would come back again.

Everything was really delicious. The atmosphere was very romantic and the lighting was moody and intimate. Our waitress came by frequently to check, but not in an invasive way. I would recommend this restaurant for a date night!

The Alouette is an absolute gem on so many levels - fab food, cozy Parisian atmosphere, attentive yet noninvasive service and let’s not forget the wines… A return visit is high on the agenda.
