Contemporary American
At Aloi we embrace a seasonal, contemporary approach to American cuisine. The Chef and his kitchen not only take their cues from the local and regional farms, anglers, ranchers, vintners and foragers, taking advantage of the great resources the seasons have to offer, but also from the specialty products that come with America’s diverse cultural fabric. Doing away with pretense, plates and meals are encouraged to be shared among diners in a casual but refined atmosphere, focusing instead on ingredients, technique and creativity.

We all thought the food at Aloi was delicious and very creative. We appreciated the fact that they had a great vegetarian entrée that was not dependent on pasta. The first course offerings were huge and could have served as entrees themselves. The only criticism we had is that the service was a bit slow. It took a very long time for the entrees to be served after we had finished the first course and that can result in your no longer being very hungry. The servers were all very polite and accomodating. We certainly will go back.

We tried out Aloi for the first time for our anniversary dinner and it was a lovely experience from start to finish. Our server was wonderful and did a great job the whole night with recommendations, the right level of conversation, and overall service. The food came out quickly and in the appropriate order based on the dish. The food itself was great - very flavorful, well cooked, and distinctly different dishes from one another. We had the cauliflower, mussels, bone marrow beignets, and the special burger they offered that night. Everything was genuinely delicious and I would order each of them again - was hands down some of the tastiest food we've had in Richmond. They also gave us glasses of bubbles for our anniversary which was just the icing on the cake. Great experience all around and we look forward to visiting again.

A small menu but all our dishes were good. Good cocktail program. Service was a little slow and impersonal. Nothing specific with the server to fault but something was off.

We had a wonderful dinner on our trip to Richmond. Maybe the best we’ve had in 35 years of annual visits. Great food. We especially liked the duck confit and the bone marrow beignets. All the entries were delicious. And a special unexpected treat was a Sunday wine discount! Highly recommend this place. Nearly all of our Richmond family and friends had not heard of it. It was a bit loud for the older among us but we still loved it and will return.

The food was delicious, we used a spoon to slurp up the broth from the mussels it was so good. I had the monkfish, and it was perfect, a little crust on the one side and succulent beyond that. The kale and potatoes were the perfect sides. The white/dark brownie dessert with the maraschino cherry sauce was so good, I ate it even though I was full. I haven't even mentioned the cocktails, the Uncle ACE is the best. You will definitely enjoy your meal here.

I would highly recommend Aloi, though expensive. That being said, they buy high quality meats and seafood and it's obvious in taste and presentation. Original recipes and specials were all delicious, as were the wines and beers. Everyone from the hostess, butcher and server were extremely nice and helpful. I'll definitely go back on special occasions.

Our meal was perfectly delicious! It was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. The My, My Myer cocktail was delicious! My only complaint would be the noise level, but that would not keep me away. Hard to control that with a place this size.

Experience was mediocre. Food was good, not great, and our group tried 4 different entrees. Waitress seemed better suited for a late night diner than this place, left plenty to be desired. This restaurant had been really hyped up and just fell flat. With so many other restaurants around, I wouldn’t go back.

We just enjoyed another delicious meal at Aloi. There were four of us dinning and we enjoyed our individual choices very much. The Monkfish, steak and scallops were all cooked just right and the sides were delicious. The Crispy Cauliflower appetizer was especially good. Aloi never disappoints.

Food was expertly prepared but not especially memorable. Moody, modern ambiance. Like a slice of NYC in Scott’s Addition. Hated the spotlight above my head though. Needs to be diffused. Server was very friendly but obviously green. Made a number of gaffs. Maitre’d was professional and knowledgeable. Overall a nice experience. Might return for drinks and dessert.

Amazing dining experience! Sunday's are half off wine bottles. We enjoyed a few starters with local bread and honey fermented butter. Then a winter salad popping with flavor. The main event was a 30 day dry aged ribeye for two, served with potatoes Daphine, local mushrooms and brussel sprouts. We finished our meal with a strong cup of blanchard's dark as dark French pressed, a long with a miso caramel sticky date pudding cake and white chocolate brownie pie with coffee ice cream candied hazelnuts and cherries. All were flavorful, satisfying and unique. This was my second visit and first for my husband, we will be back! Great place in a popular neighborhood. My favorite meal in Scott's addition for an intimate meal with great food.

We loved our evening at Aloi. The decor is very interesting and has a cool vibe to it. The wait staff was very friendly and intimately familiar with the entire menu. The Uncle Ace cocktail was unique and so tasty. Every component of my grilled bavette steak was outstanding. The chocolate brownie was beautifully plated and out of this world tasty. They were very accommodating with one of our guests who had food allergies. We will definitely be back. This is one of the best places in Richmond.

Wonderful ambience, although a couple of group tables were pretty loud (it was Sat. night-I get it). Service was beyond wonderful. Food excellent. I had a delicious cocktail pre dinner, glass of wine during. The drinks were pretty pricey but the food was priced comparable to finer dining establishments. They have a small parking lot if you’re lucky enough to snag a spot. Parking in Scott’s Addition on Sat night can be a pain. Highly recommend

We went to Aloi to celebrate my son’s birthday before going to see a movie. The food was delicious although we did have to wait longer than expected for the food to arrive. My 16-year-old required a gluten-free and dairy-free entree and the kitchen adapted the chicken dish for her. She ate every last morsel. My 19 and 20 year old sons devoured their food, too. All 3 of them ate all of the beet purée and every other vegetable on their plates. Huge success. The place is a bit dark and moody so probably perfect for post-college 20- & 30-somethings.

Overall, great atmosphere and space. Food was very good but the portions were bit small. The server had no personality and tried to rush us.
What really got me was the fact that we spent over $350 for dinner for 4 people and they had the nerve to charge us for additional bread with dinner as well as a "cake cutting fee" for serving a birthday cake we had brought for one of our guests birthday.
For these reasons, I would not return.
