Almond and Oak
Ample servings and excellent quality and presentation
all great except hamburger itself just ok. drinks super.
Had a great time celebrating a friend’s birthday. Love the menu choices and their beverages are outstanding! Many choices to please everyone’s pallet. We had a tough time choosing a dessert - waitstaff brought us a half order of lemon ice cream to try. The service was impeccable and friendly. This is my new hangout while waiting for traffic to die down and unwind after a day at the office.
The space is beautiful, has a warm industrial relaxed vibe. The vegetable hash wasn’t really hash. It was some vegetables presented as they would appear as a side dish. The hash conjures images of small diced pieces of well-browned bites. This dish was not that at all. The potatoes seemed steamed and lacked any exterior browning or crispness so characteristic of hash. Another diner had the pork Benedict and it arrived room temperature. Pork was tasty though.
Just returned to Penrose after a long hiatus based on the concerns around ownership. It's still a grand space, good value and food that I think is even up a notch from prior years. I hope the new name engenders even more interest. It will, again, become a regular for me.
This is one of the BEST restaurants I've ever been to! We had a little of everything and it was all beyond delicious. The service was also excellent and very friendly. My friends and I go out to eat monthly and have been for over 20 years. This is by far one of the best we have tried. Oh and did I mention their mouth watering, superb cocktails?! What a treat! It's not cheap, but the servings are generous and everything tasted amazing. We will be returning for sure!
Great bar, great food and generous portions, live jazz an added plus, high energy, and a confidence and professionalism from the top on what they’re going there under new leadership.
Great atmosphere, setting, food, and service! We tried a little of everything and it was delish.
We had excellent service. The food was outstanding. We were given plenty of time to enjoy our pre-dinner cocktail at our table before dinner. All the food was brought to the table timely. We were never rushed, even though the restaurant was busy.
The only negative to our experience was the noise level was so high, that it was impossible to carry on a conversation. The main reason for the high noise level was the music blasting over the sound system. Because of the music level, people in the restaurant had to shout to each other to carry on a conversation.
Great neighborhood spot with friendly service and freshly sourced food. Highly recommend
The food/drinks was not as good as Penrose used to be, which is sad bc it used to be one of my favorite restaurants.
This restaurant offers a balanced menu, interesting wines, and a wonderful way to people watch, both customers and folks strolling along Grand Avenue. My mother loved her hamburger, and the stolen fries were delicious. Swordfish and green beans came out moist and crisp, respectively. Save room for dessert, as you won’t regret the indulgence.
Beautiful restaurant, wonderful food and service. They embody the true meaning of "neighborhood restaurant." I try and make it there whenever I have the chance
I love the brunch here! The food is great, I usually get the seasonal veggie hash with poached eggs. The biscuits are so good too. Good coffee. I love the homemade fruit preserves and hot sauces, it's the extra little things that make it special! Nothing is more disappointing than crappy jam and coffee when you out for brunch, so I really appreciate the house made, seasonal accouterments. Good service too. I really like that you can make a reservation. I'm totally over waiting an hour for brunch. I know I am treating myself, and I like to have a proper restaurant experience on those days. I will say that it may be difficult for vegans to find suitable food here, and sometimes the meat selection is very pork heavy. Options for vegetarians. Easy to avoid cheese. Delicious sausages!
Delicious cocktails. Nice staff. Yummy eats.
The noise level was not energetic. It was intolerable. The food was erratic. One dish was not eaten. The burger was good. The other 2 meals were adequate not a wow.
The food was excellent awesome taste . The place it’s self it’s beautiful and somewhat romantic I would recommend it for every special occasion . I would definitely go back
We enjoyed ourselves, had a great waiter who was very attentive without being intrusive, and always had a smile. The ambiance was a bit noisy for our tastes, but otherwise, comfortable. We ordered three dishes and dessert. The Oysters were fresh and briny, the crab cakes had a tad more filler than when I make them, but were packed with Dungeness, and the remoulade was good. Squid was well fried but over salted, and my husband loves salt. He commented on that. But otherwise, very flavorful and loved the artichokes in with it. Dessert, the lemon cake, was delicious, huckleberries a great contrast. The martini my husband ordered made him quite happy, too. And it was happy hour, so it came with a couple of oysters, prompting us to order more for the meal. We will return!
This is a frequent date night spot for my husband and I. They have great cocktails and the food is always delicious. What I particularly like about Penrose is that there is plenty of space between tables so, unlike some of the other trendy dinner spots, you don't get bumped by people moving around, you aren't smushed up right against another party, and you feel like you're having a more intimate dinner.
The brunch was great every meal was well received and enjoyed and the staff took wonderful care of us. We’ll be back.
Best-ever place for a brunch with friends. Many menu options beyond bacon and eggs (although the bacon is the best in the Bay Area).
Phenomenal food and incredibly kind and generous service! My favorite spot to eat in the bay area, by a longshot! My mom came to visit and it's always the spot she wants to go :)
Food was outstanding, close to fine dining. Service was superior. My only criticism is that the noise made it too loud to hear our conversations. Some baffling on the ceiling and/or walls would help to dampen down the noise.
We always receive a welcoming reception from the host. The ambience is beautiful at night. However, the noise level is irritating and detracts from the overall experience. Menu offerings are imaginative and fresh. Service is attentive. Cocktails are imaginative.
Amazing food options
Spent my birthday brunch here. The food was very good to excellent. Good quality ingredients, well executed and with a creative twist. Had the shrimp & polenta and roast lamb eggs benedict. The former was similar to shrimp and grits but had ingredients which suggested gumbo. The lamb in the eggs benedict was perfectly done, and I do mean perfectly. Not for those of you who like your meat cooked until brown (or ask for it well done). Excellent flavor, tender and not greasy as one might expect. I would order it again.
We also ordered beignet which at first to me seemed a bit dense, but by the time I ate my second one I'd gotten to like them. So, no complaints there.
Restaurant is pleasantly sunny on a Sunday spring morning.
The swordfish was exceptional!!!
One of the best dining experiences we’ve had in a while. Can’t wait to go back!
The gnocchi is to die for! Since Rico took over Penrose the food is spectacular—- everything I’ve had has been delicious. I will definitely be back and I have already referred other friends there.
Awesome! Food was excellent, service was friendly, ambiance was lovely.
I would love to be able to recommend that people go to Almond & Oak. I look forward to the change of name being reflected on the website, signage, etc. The meal was delicious and the service was fine. It is a loud place to begin with but when the combo started playing, it was impossible to have a conversation withou shouting. Luckily, we were done with our meal by then.
Fabulous hamburgers and French fries! The change of name to Almond and Oak will be confusing, not because it will be new and different, but because, while I eat almonds, I do not eat acorns.
Loved this place! Fresh food that was delicious, with portion sizes that were neither skimpy nor giant. Wonderful timing of the service as well, we did not feel rushed at all as we were there to catch up with friends. The beignets were delicious, as was the benedict, the shrimp and polenta (thanks for NOT putting cheese in these grits btw! I love cheesy grits but not with seafood!), and the chive scrambled eggs were all fantastic. And the cocktails were again very delicious and a reasonable size! Such a fun spot. We will absolutely be back!
Food is amazing, service is very friendly. Wish the amount of food was closer to a full sized meal but, that depends on what you order I guess. I ordered the Gnocchi which was amazing but, I was still hungry after. It’s a little silly to spend so much and then have to find something else to eat a little later.
I visited Penrose, now Almond and Oak, for a special occasion dinner. A friend and I shared several dishes, including calamari, fish, brussel sprouts, and broccoli. The servings were generous and we had enough left over to take home and enjoy the next day. We made room for two scrumptious desserts : an olive oil orange sponge cake and a chocolate mocha souffle as well as a couple of mixed drinks. The wait staff was excellent knowing the ingredients of dishes and eager to please. Parking, even on a Saturday evening, was surprisingly easy with a parking lot across the street. The only down point was the noise level; with nameless music blaring in the background, high ceilings and a restaurant full of diners, it was difficult to hear my friend only 6 inches away. Nevertheless, I would return in a minute and highly recommend Penrose, aka Almond and Oak.
Hadn’t been here since new ownership, and the food was better than ever! So good. We will be going back soon. And excellent service as always. Our waiter even remembered us.
the space is awesome and we got to experience a mariachi band as well. All the service staff is personable and the food is really consistent. one of my favorite venues in Oakland
Awesome flavors and fantastic ambience. First time trying the deserts (orange olive oil sponge cake) and it was magical.
The food is creative and delicious. Good sized-portions. Wonderful staff. This is my favorite restaurant in Oakland.
