I was blown away with this restaurant. It started when I was walking down the street towards the restaurant and I could smell the wood in the oven. Its a beautiful and open dining and kitchen area. The food is large, pretty and DELICIOUS. It's marvelous and I highly recommend it.
Almond and Oak is wonderful addition to the Oakland restaurant scene. Beautiful decor, delicious food, wonderful and friendly wait staff, yummy drinks with an awesome bar. I have been here twice and will definitely be back. You cannot go wrong with any occasion with this restaurant.
Excellent food, lovely place. Too noisy, but that's everything these days, isn't it? Pity. Oh, and points off for dessert--no chocolate???
Fantastic food and vibe always...really a gem...big ups to Rico and his whole staff.
It was quiet at 5:30pm for an early dinner. Salads and corn soup were excellent and generous. We had small plates (gnocchi with ragu and grilled asparagus with fried goat cheese) in place of mains. Excellent cocktails. Will definitely return.
First time at the restaurant since the ownership and name changed. Am absolutely delighted to say that everything about Almond and Oak was superlative. Cocktails and food was inventive, extremely tasty and abundant. Service was top notch. Ambience was familiar with the good vibe that Penrose had.
My third time here and it was amazing!!! Loved everything as usual. Fantastic restaurant. Great staff. Amazing owner/Chef!
This was a terrific meal with good service in a beautiful atmosphere. Highly recommended
The new owner/chef Rico has a lovely menu of seasonal ingredients. The spring peas were a standout. Also recommend for happy hour with food and drink specials!
Excellent pork chop plate, which we both had. One of our best meals there — which is already usually very good!
I'll admit I did not enjoy the music that was playing, at all. Service was great after they remembered the appetizer. Food was delish
Our server was excellent. Unfortunately, the food did not live up to the service. We asked if we could have warm sliced bread. It arrived grilled to a crisp with charcoal lines. The chicken was very salty. My hamburger was cooked to medium rare, as requested, but of the extra cost options - cheese and avocado - I requested only the avocado, but I got both. The noise level was not conducive to conversations as the room is extremely loud.
I love the food, decor, and ambiance of Almond & Oak! It's our favorite place for family brunches and date nights, and we love to bring our guests here. High quality food and experience and a place you truly feel welcome.
The food is delicious, organic, and paired well! They were also very attentive to our needs and requests.
Three of us went for brunch on Sat. Our first visit of many to come. The wait staff was warm and welcoming and very knowledgeable on the menu. We met the wonderful owner and head chef. It was a great experience all around!
The food was great. Service staff were friendly, very helpful and overall good but a little slow at times. My only suggestion would be to offer some options for food intolerances, such as gluten-free options or dairy free, or both.
Very cool place and service was good. Food was good
Almond and Oak was fantastic! I dined recently with my partner to celebrate his birthday, and the staff made us feel so special. There were a wealth of vegetarian options or alternatives, and everything we got was delicious.
Loved Penrose, and A&O seems like it’s going to be great. There was a live “smooth Jazz” background music band playing that was very loud and I don’t think really fit the ambiance of the neighborhood or the restaurant. It seems like it should be in a suburban hotel, rather than Grand. We were unable to hold a conversation and left ASAP. I really hope they don’t make the live music a regular thing
This restaurant is touted as 'best ambiance' on open table which is why I chose it, but the live music was so loud we could barely hold a conversation. I cannot comprehend how anyone thought it was an appropriate level. I am a little irritated that customers are asked to advise of any changes in attendance by email on the day of the reservation, as if we are assumed to be unreliable, while the restaurant did not reciprocate by notifying us of the band that would render the atmosphere utterly different than promised.
We were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. Everything we ate, from asparagus to pork chop, was fantastic. Toward the end, the live music started and it was too loud to have a conversation so we skipped the dessert, but we would go back if they change the menu from time to time.
Everything was spot on! Loved it as Penrose and love it just as much as Almond and Oak!
The pork chop was perfectly cooked and a hefty portion. It has been two days since I ate it and I’m still thinking about it! I appreciated that a lighter dessert of fresh berries and citrus whipped cream was an option, it was the best kind of treat to end the meal.
I love this place. I think the new ownership has added a sense of excitement to the menu, and the portion size has gone up from previous. Brunch is a better price deal than dinner, but both are delicious. I have never eaten anything here that I didn't enjoy and the staff is very nice.
Ample servings and excellent quality and presentation
Great food, but wow that is loud, they even play music over the din.
Potential to be so much better...perhaps it was an off Friday night? Good food, uninspired but adequate service and lukewarm cortado that looked like a latte. You know that feeling that if you told the waiter that something wasn’t right that they wouldn’t really care...?
all great except hamburger itself just ok. drinks super.
Had a great time celebrating a friend’s birthday. Love the menu choices and their beverages are outstanding! Many choices to please everyone’s pallet. We had a tough time choosing a dessert - waitstaff brought us a half order of lemon ice cream to try. The service was impeccable and friendly. This is my new hangout while waiting for traffic to die down and unwind after a day at the office.
The space is beautiful, has a warm industrial relaxed vibe. The vegetable hash wasn’t really hash. It was some vegetables presented as they would appear as a side dish. The hash conjures images of small diced pieces of well-browned bites. This dish was not that at all. The potatoes seemed steamed and lacked any exterior browning or crispness so characteristic of hash. Another diner had the pork Benedict and it arrived room temperature. Pork was tasty though.
Just returned to Penrose after a long hiatus based on the concerns around ownership. It's still a grand space, good value and food that I think is even up a notch from prior years. I hope the new name engenders even more interest. It will, again, become a regular for me.
This is one of the BEST restaurants I've ever been to! We had a little of everything and it was all beyond delicious. The service was also excellent and very friendly. My friends and I go out to eat monthly and have been for over 20 years. This is by far one of the best we have tried. Oh and did I mention their mouth watering, superb cocktails?! What a treat! It's not cheap, but the servings are generous and everything tasted amazing. We will be returning for sure!
Great bar, great food and generous portions, live jazz an added plus, high energy, and a confidence and professionalism from the top on what they’re going there under new leadership.
Great atmosphere, setting, food, and service! We tried a little of everything and it was delish.
We had excellent service. The food was outstanding. We were given plenty of time to enjoy our pre-dinner cocktail at our table before dinner. All the food was brought to the table timely. We were never rushed, even though the restaurant was busy.
The only negative to our experience was the noise level was so high, that it was impossible to carry on a conversation. The main reason for the high noise level was the music blasting over the sound system. Because of the music level, people in the restaurant had to shout to each other to carry on a conversation.
Great neighborhood spot with friendly service and freshly sourced food. Highly recommend
Glad I got around to writing my reviews. It reminds me that I want to go back here. They provided excellent service to our large group. Food was great. Drinks were great. Ambience is great. The high ceilings keep it from being too loud to talk. I'll be headed back soon.
The food/drinks was not as good as Penrose used to be, which is sad bc it used to be one of my favorite restaurants.
This restaurant offers a balanced menu, interesting wines, and a wonderful way to people watch, both customers and folks strolling along Grand Avenue. My mother loved her hamburger, and the stolen fries were delicious. Swordfish and green beans came out moist and crisp, respectively. Save room for dessert, as you won’t regret the indulgence.
Beautiful restaurant, wonderful food and service. They embody the true meaning of "neighborhood restaurant." I try and make it there whenever I have the chance
