allium restaurant + bar Ratings and Reviews
I have had great meals at Allium, but this was not one of them. It was our anniversary date, and I am sad to say that we were treated like an annoyance-- I have food allergies, and we have had great experiences at Allium twice before-- they handled my allergies with grace and made me feel welcome in the past. This time, it was clear that our server was stressed and we felt unwelcome. We also asked if the flatiron steak was enough to split, and he said yes-- but it was TINY and we each got a plate with one fingerling potato and two bites of steak on it. We would have ordered two steaks had we known. Not a great experience, we need a romantic date do-over somewhere else. Too bad.
Food was imaginative, but for some some dishes might have too much salt. The fried chicken was succulent without being dried out, a rarity. Pork balls with polenta were wonderful, it was the only dish that might have needed more salt for some diners. The carnita tacos were delicious, but salty, not so much that we would not eat them, and spicy hot, with more hot sauce on side, not needed. the deviled eggs and popcorn were fun.
With kids in Boston, we make frequent road trips to visit our sweet grand baby. Great Barrington is our stop every time, leaving the last 2-1/2 hrs into Boston for the morning with fresh eyes. And our reward for having spent 10 hours on the road is dinner at Allium. They never disappoint. The food is creative and delicious, and the vibe in this gem of a restaurant is special. Go there for a special evening. You won't regret.
If you like to be downtown, this is the place for you. Local fresh food and interesting amazing creations. We liked the small plates. We experimented with two small plates and one big plate. We will definitely go back. Service was awesome. Highly recommend this place. Hard to find places like this if you truly enjoy fresh food and great chefs.
It's not just a ploy of getting you to eat at Allium. They truly live by their motto and their small plates are more generous than small. I shared various greens along with farro and sea bass with a friend. We were in awe. The ambience, service and food choices are excellent.
This was one of the best dinners I have ever had, without exception. We shared the berle farm popcorn ($6), raw kale salad ($9), fried pickled red onions ($7), fish tacos ($16), and daire burger ($16). Everything was incredible, but the kale salad was the standout. The staff was kind, courteous, and beyond friendly. I'll be dreaming of this meal until I go back, which I'm sure will be soon (even though it's a 2 hour drive away).
Nice ambiance and excellent, friendly service. The quality of the food is very good but the menu is hit and miss. The selection is a bit too diverse, trying to please every whim and fancy of the current restaurant scene. Some of the selections just have too many ingredients, resulting in a mix in which you cannot discern what you are eating. Simplification would help. Should warn customers of the hot peppers in the cavatelli dish.
Our place to go for special occasions or just a quick bite.
This time had deviled eggs and popcorn to start then kale salad and faro salads (both are great try them!) split some tacos and then burgers with a side of the fried red onions, great fun!
Ask your server for advice, great menu.
How fortuitous for my traveling companion and I to travel through Great Barrington, Massachusetts in the Berkshire region and discover a wonderful restaurant - the Allium Restaurant and Bar, We were early for our Sunday 5:30 p.m. Open Table reservation and were greeted by friendly staff who seated in their attractive dining room with smart tables settings. Our waitress was truly professional explaining all of the marvelous menu selections where local New England products are featured. We each started with roasted cauliflower soup - oh so good on this chilly evening. For my main course, I enjoyed the Pan Seared Salmon, very nicely presented over berry patch spinach and a delicious celeriac puree. It was the best salmon I have tasted. My companion enjoyed the Misty Knoll Chicken Confit, and praised it as well. Could our dining experience possibly get better with such winning main dishes? Yes, since we shared a Chocolate Hazelnut Budino, prepared with olive oil and sea salt. Trust me, it's a masterpiece dessert. Allium offers a wide selection of food options for the meat, fish and vegetarian diners. The service is terrific with attentive staff who aim to please. We only drank water at our meal, but Allium features a fun selection of alcoholic and non-alcholic drinks and several fine selections of wines by the glass. Our visit to Allium was in late December (I'm certain Allium is a hot spot for visitors to Tanglewood and the Berkshires in the summertime) but the restaurant had a lively crowd and the bar area off the main dining room looked fun and inviting. I will make certain my next travel through Great Barrington includes a return visit to a winning restaurant - Allium Restaurant.
Food was unique, locally sourced and quite delicious. Even the drink menu was interesting and tasty. Service was knowledgeable and attentive. The hostess even remembered which coats and umbrellas were ours, which was the icing on our experience. My only issue was finding this gem, exterior signage lacking making it challenging to find for non locals.
Being a Manhattan-ite, I can't help but stumble upon some amazing food. It's a treat to be in the Berkshires and to discover a restaurant that's superb in its own right. Tasted the cauliflower soup, hen of the woods, the salmon and the burger. All terrific. I've also been to Allium's sister restaurant (Mezze, in Williamstown), and both of these restaurants really have their act together.
I had one of the best things I have ever eaten at Allium.
They have a small plate with hen-of-the-woods mushrooms. It was quite simply outstanding!!! - I am still thinking about it - really memorable.
I also had fresh lemony chopped kale salad & broccoli cheddar gratin - was a healthy(ish) and delicious dinner, that I wouldn't normally make for myself.
We sat at the bar & the bartender Billy was really knowledgeable about every detail on the menu. He was phenomenal at multi-tasking and remained pleasant and attentive - all while being slammed with complicated drinks for the whole restaurant. He didn't miss a beat. It's rare to get such stellar service like that anymore. Great music playlist too.
Thank you Allium.
I'm not a food snob, foodie, or extremely demanding. This worked.
The menu was creative, but not at the expense of superb food. The service was low-key but very competent.
The food was delicious. The "snacks" were wonderful (deviled egg with bacon jam; kimchi), and the entrees were cooked perfectly. The portions were ample. I have a good appetite-this was immensely satisfying. We appreciated the chance to get "just" a scoop of ice cream each.
If the bill was 50% higher I wouldn't have complained. Overall, it was our first, but most definitely not our last time there. Highly, highly recommended.
Final observation - I like room when I eat. They could have crammed more tables in. They didn't. Good for them.
First time diners and could not have been more satisfied. Fish and vegetarian family. The halibut was so fresh we went looking for a pond in the back of the restaurant and the vegan risotto was also out of this world. Dessert was delish and Jason, our waiter, made great recommendations.
Absolutely loved it! Everything about it. My girlfriend is vegetarian and the kale salad blew her mind. She asked for a poached egg on top (ordered off the menu, but inspired by the egg that is optional with the burger), which took it to an entirely new amazing level as well... So much so that we told the waitress, and she informed us that those in the know actually come back specifically to get the kale salad with an egg on top regularly. Popcorn was amazing, as was the specialty burger, and the sorbet for desert. Couldn't say better things.
We arrived and the hostess escorted us to the table. The wait staff seemed savvy and assisted us in our beverage choice. She also recommended a small plate panzanella salad which we enjoyed. I ordered the chicken confit and my husband ordered the tagliattelle pasta with the egg on top. Our dinner was served within 10 minutes of placing the order. We had not even finished the salad. My chicken was far too salty and my husband did not see the reasoning behind adding a poached egg to the dish. They quickly gave me another selection from the menu. It was a very average arctic char. However, the overall experience was only average. Would not hurry back.
There were 4 of us traveling from Connecticut to Great Barrington and dining at Allium for the first time. The food was excellent--inventive and familiar at the same time. The local sourcing of food is greatly appreciated. Service was just right--helpful but not intrusive.
We enjoyed every morsel!
