About All Spice – San Mateo

San Mateo’s most exciting restaurant is All Spice, an eclectic, contemporary eatery from Chef/Owner Sachin Chopra. Chef Chopra artfully blends the freshness of Californian ingredients with global techniques to create inventive, layered and flavorful dishes. Whether you choose to order from our constantly evolving a la carte selection or to experience our nightly Chef's Tasting Menu, you will be presented with something delicious, beautiful with just a hint of the exotic.

The restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian with beautiful hardwood floors, a fireplace and a variety of architectural details. Each of three intimate dining rooms is decorated in bold, shimmering hues accented with gold. Thirty seats are scattered throughout. Professional service and a thoughtful, moderately priced wine list complement Chopra's dishes.

A very disappointing experience - not sure what warrants the high ratings. We did the tasting menu. Food was well presented but every course was *very* bland. The chef seems to value producing foams, gelees and emulsions and using 10+ ingredients per dish, rather than developing deep or interesting flavors. My halibut was overcooked (mushy) - the chef added a trout course - a nice gesture but we couldn't eat it otherwise we would have been too full to eat the remaining courses (it was also odd as we had let the waiter know at the start that we did not want a lot of food). Steak course lacked seasoning. Service was terrible - waiter did not ask if we wanted more water or alcohol, suggest coffee, etc. He could also benefit from giving a smile and some warmth - very perfunctory. He noted our general lack of enjoyment of the meal and the manager took 20% off the bill. They did reasonable things to try to make up for us not enjoying the meal but I would not recommend All Spice or return, based on the consistent blandness and poor service.

We visited All Spice for our anniversary. The food was impeccable. The service was attentive, as expected. It felt quaint but upscale. The chefs choice/taste menu was worth it, many different textures and flavors we hadn’t tried before. As an afterthought we wished we had gotten the wine flight that went with the taste menu.

We have been here several times now. Dinner here is not a meal, it's an experience. The chef must be a chemist who studies the taste buds because he knows how to create a symphony of flavors on the tongue. His wife is very kind and friendly as are the wait staff. What a well run operation it is. You can tell there is a lot of hard work and passion that goes into All Spice.

We tried the butter-nut squash Steak as the main dish. There were 3-4 non-veg options but only 2 veg options. The main course was too sweet and beyond a point I just could not eat it.
Please add more veg options and make sure that it covers all taste-buds. Main course should be less on sweeter side or else it becomes difficult to eat.

I took my husband here for his 50th birthday. When I researched this restaurant I was initially disappointed by only having two vegetarian ontray choices and a few veggie appetizers. We were pleasantly surprised by our meals. The food was fantastic and our waiter was fabulous. It's a hidden gem in my San Mateo neighborhood. We're already planning on going back.

I wanted to like All Spice more than I did, but the experience was nevertheless enjoyable. The ambience is cozy - three warm, cheerful and inviting rooms inside a house set back from El Camino Real. Our server was attentive and patient. And for a Thursday night, the restaurant was filled to capacity. All pluses. The restaurant is billed as Indian in style, but I beg to differ. The chef may be Indian but his style is French-Indian-California fusion. While that's not a bad thing, on a fairly limited menu I had trouble finding items that appealed to me from their descriptions. With the server's input, I ordered the onion soup appetizer and vegetarian gnocchi as an entree. The dishes that arrived in front of me weren't what I'd expected, and yet the presentations and flavor combinations were unique and delicious, which is where the chef's creativity shines. And the homemade bread with 'designer' butter made a wonderful accompaniment, as did the marvelous chocolate mocha semi-fredo dessert. The restaurant's only alcoholic beverages are beer, cider and wine - with a nice wine-by-the-glass listing. I found their own brand of Cabernet Sauvignon enjoyable. Still, to me, All Spice would benefit from a new menu with more options to choose from. Something more is needed, and to me it has something to do with expectations. Maybe they should remove 'Indian' from the billing.

Wy wife and I really enjoyed All Spice- especially the vegetarian choices. Although I did order the duck it was not my favorite part of the experience. Everything else we had was vegetarian and I think that is one of the real strong aspects of their menu. The flavors of the combinations of mushrooms, the lintel cake were wonderful. The service was excellent we felt very well cared for.

This was the fourth time we've been to Allspice and it will not be the last. Everyone we've taken there has become a devotee, for good reason: exceptional service, ambiance, and fabulous, innovative cuisine. Perfect for a really special occasion or just a dinner with friends. Don't miss it!

This was a dinner for a friend's birthday, and none of us had eaten here before. And it was hard to find the place since it is set-back from the main street! Once we got in, it was more like entering a home instead of a typical restaurant. There is a very small check-in area where we waited for a few mins before getting our table. The food is amazing -- not your typical indian place (in fact, they food is eclectic with a minimal Indian influence); lots of interesting sauces, and not too many choices.

Cute funky ambience and absolutely outstanding food! It's best to bring your own wine because they only have four selections. The food is spicy but not hot spicy. I highly recommend this restaurant. It is a little pricey but well worth it.

We love all spice, and the food was incredible, however all of the dishes were brought out at once which made it difficult to enjoy the dishes and pace ourselves -- by the time we ate some of the dishes they were cold.

My guest frequently commented about how good the food was, and she is a bit of a foodie! I enjoyed the Albarino wine on offer, and the pleasant, attentive, staff.

Intimate restaurant situated in a small house in a nook just off El Camino Real with (surprise!) adequate parking. The service is good, certainly not obsessively attentive, which is fine by me. The reason to come here is the relaxed atmosphere, and the food, which is of a variety that's a rarity in the Bay Area: savory items with intensely flavored sauces, moderate to generous portions, and the mind-blowing chocolate kulfi. I would happily eat anything put in front of me just to get to the kulfi. The house "draft red" is a perfectly adequate table wine.

A visit isn't cheap but not high-dollar (by Bay standards) either, and you can find an infinite number of $25-35 entrees farther north in San Francisco that don't even rise to the standard of mediocre.

The food was very good and the variety was good for such a small restaurant. The service was good . However, our server had zero personality. There was no enthusiasm during the presentation of the special or at any time. He didn't look at us, he looked over us. It was almost uncomfortable.

Very disappointing and tired. Had high expectations. Immediately dashed when a nice bottle of Syrah was brought warm to the table. It isn't that hard to keep fine wine in a fridge and serve it properly. The food was very overpriced and just too eccentric to recommend.

The dining experience was phenomenal - the flavors in all courses were like a bouquet of spices and herbs. The chef prepared a frizzy greens salad (none were on the menu) that was excellent and would be a good addition to the starter menu. The chocolate desserts were wonderful We had a bottle of 1999 Red Burgundy to top it all off. I have made an other reservation already!

Everything was fantastic! The only negative was the chairs. Very uncomfortable, to big to sit back in for my wife. So I have to take her to the chiropractor now. I noticed all the women clients were all sitting forward because of the chairs. Not sitting back and relaxing.
Everything else was great. My input, please invest in some smaller quality low back chairs.

Very high quality food with incredibly complex flavors. There is so much going on in every dish that sometimes I thought it was "too much", but it certainly tastes good. Also, they give you very large portions, which is unusual for such fine dining establishments, so keep this in mind when ordering.
