All Spice – San Mateo
Come take a special journey when you dine at our charming restaurant.
Husband-and-wife team Sachin Chopra and Shoshana Wolff have turned a 1906 Victorian house into a pioneering dining destination that showcases Modern Californian Cuisine. It's local and seasonal whenever possible, but is also so much more. Sachin stretches beyond his classical training to create elegantly composed dishes that subtly hint at Indian, Japanese, Norwegian, Mediterranean and other worldly influences. The result is a unique cuisine with its own distinctive point of view. Warm, professional service and a thoughtful wine list enhance the experience.

Thoroughly enjoyed the food and ambience. Excellent!
The menu was not very creative, and the execution on the food was not good. Omelette was overcooked, Dutch baby overcooked. Toast not toasted. When the home fries are the best part of the meal, that is not a good sign. We’ve gone here several time for dinner before COVID, always amazing, but we will not be doing brunch again. At this price point I expect better.
Overall great experience. Food is delicious. Pricey for a date night.
Wonderful! We love All Spice.
Love this Gem tucked away in a small house floating in a back-alley location in San Mateo.
The food is absolutely spectacular in both presentation and cuisine wise. We had the 4 course with the accompanying wine pairing and enjoyed every course (three would be more than enough unless you’re in a mood to feast). The wines are perfectly paired and are to my liking as they are complex and primarily on the dry side. The waiter was proficient in explaining all the ingredients along with being very knowledgeable on the wines. The beet salad was so beautiful in appearance, I hated to eat but so glad I did as it was so rich and deep with flavor. The chef using many layers of flavors that all complement each other without letting any of them being over powering. Love the staff, atmosphere and of course the cuisine. A foodie must.
It’s always a treat to dine here, the prix fixe menu and choices are very good and fun, as good as any similar out there and at a more sustainable value. I recommend the soups, seafood main choice, and pretty much any of the desserts. We are generally weary of wine pairings but the past 2-3 times have gone with it and been pleased (and a appreciate the flexibility on a couple special requests). The service is exceptional, and it always feels good to be remembered! The outdoor patio is well maintained and the heaters work fine. At a time we are still mostly sticking close to home it’s really a treat to have All Spice near us.
Love All Spice!
If you're looking for a great date night, All Spice was a pleasant surprise. Great food and great wine pairings. A++
The patio was small but nicely socially distanced. The Sunday brunch menu was yummy! We ordered the curry fried chicken sammy and the broccoli melt. The taste of each was awesome, the bread was a little soggy on one side of the broccoli met but no big deal because the sauce was delicious. Would come back just for those two items.
Just lovely!! The food is imaginative and the service is delightful.
Great food, very diverse and extremely well presented. Impeccable service, professional, relaxed and accommodating. Outdoor seating but it feels very private.
Overall an outstanding experience.
All Spice is truly a neighborhood gem, perfect for special occasions. We eat here on a regular basis and have never been disappointed. There's always something new and tasty to try; the chef does a wonderful job of mixing classic recipes with Asian spices. All Spice has a good wine list and fantastic, attentive service. It's a small, intimate setting, so plan ahead!!
So firstly I’d like to say, I love this restaurant. But I did not care for their Valentine’s Day menu. It was rather bland and lacked the mixes of spices I ususlly
I am pregnant and couldn't eat a lot of the courses but figured my husband would just eat for two. Instead the chef prepared vegetarian and pregnancy safe courses that were incredible. Such complex and beautifully prepared dishes and such wonderful service. An evening we will never forget.
I have eaten at this restaurant for special occasions twice, and the first time the food was amazing but the waiter was extremely rude. I had hoped it was an off-night and since the food was so good I came back for Valentine’s Day. I deeply regret that choice given that the food wasn’t anywhere near as good the second time and we had two different waiters who were both extremely rude. As an example, one member of the party was vegetarian and when the appetizer was served (it looked like steak tartare) he asked if it was vegetarian and the waiter snapped at him that it was and that he didn’t need to ask about every single dish. It’s ridiculous to spend over $150 per person (not including drinks) to be treated that way. Do yourselves a favor and don’t go to this place.
My wife and I have been to this restaurant 2 times in the past 3 weeks. I like creative cuisine from the Chef, boldness, and flair to the food, and uniqueness to flavors.
The food was imaginative, beautifully presented and delicious. The string in a small house was intimate and quiet. Would definitely return for another meal.
Food was absolutely fantastic - with lots of well-balanced Indian spices. A slice of delicious, freshly baked bread, and the 5 courses I chose were just plain awesome. Service was great, too. The paired (all American) wines were good, but not outstanding. The total price of everything (including tip) was a bit high at $200 per person.
We have dined several times before and went with another couple this time. I did not realize it had changed to a prix fixe menu. The total for 4 of us was $600.00. Our server was spotty and we waited quite awhile for him to open the one bottle of wine we had brought. I think it is very confusing with the way the menu is laid out and your options. We all had a three course meal.. but I ended up eating my main course while others were eating dessert and had been offered coffee. My husband said his two dishes were excellent. I thought mine were all fine.. I did come home and have a snack though.. so for the price we will not return. But if you are a foodie, into the several courses, small servings.. and don't mind the price then it is a nice option in San Mateo.
Tasty and interesting food. Of the 9-10 things we tried, all were delicious. All Spice is not cheap, but it is a good value.
We’ve been to All Spice about 4 or 5 years back and went back because the experience was great back then. It seems like the quality of food and the service has slipped since then. Overall, it was disappointing to see the change.
a special dinner out treat.............special. Food and service spectacular. A truly fun date night dinner.....truly. Special flavors and food presentation added to the mix. A must visit restaurant.
What an amazing experience! We loved everything about this place!
Great food as always.
It had been a while since eating here.
Still very creative and delicious.
My one nit pick is that the menu is now only 3 or 5 course prix fixe menu at $75 and $115.
Kinda pricey bringing growing teen foodies, so it would’ve been expensive for three, but they let us share two 3 course meals.
Wish they had a la carte options.
Wine options pretty limited but then I’m a wine geek.
Wonderful restaurant for a special dinner in a quiet atmosphere. All of the dishes we had were excellent. The salmon, scallops and carrot soup were especially noteworthy.
A decent meal and very beautiful place- though they forgot our birthday note - and brought dessert our with entrees
The food at All Spice is off the charts! The flavors, sauces and pairings are on caliber with some of the best Michelin rated restaurants. The ambiance is funky and cozy. The only flaws are the disaffected wait staff who don’t seem to care about what they are serving, can’t answer questions about the wine and the ingredients and just don’t seem excited about the amazing food they are serving. The kitchen is turning out fabulous meals but the wait staff needs to be better trained about what these meals are, what wines they are pouring and to show some passion for both. We LOVE this restaurant and want to see it continue to be successful! Would enjoy being served by staff as excited about it as we are.
Nice place! Very unique 'spices' style, like the venison in new autumn table, fit with the spices wine perfectly!
We dinned several times at All Spice and liked the place very much. This time the food was bad. We choose the 5 course dinner, and were very disappointed. One of the dishes had some chips that were so hard that you nearly broke your teeth. The prawns were not deveined. The so-called Gnocchis were just deep-fried mashed potatoes formed like worms. We were so disappointed that we did not want to eat the desert. Very expensive and very disappointing.
Superb, innovative dishes served q
Great fine. Charming little house with very good food. Interesting menu, 3 or 5 courses. Very nice service. Ask for a table in the front room but not near the door.
Such a charming dining room. Amazing & surprising flavor combinations in beautiful presentations.
The wine pairings were perfect with each dish. Quiet attentive service with knowledgeable explanations.
Always such a treat.
I was disappointed. The food is okay at best. Not flavorful, on the sweet side, a lot of fruit as garnish. Perhaps high end south Asian food is hard to achieve. I was extraordinarily disappointed. Perhaps they’d have more success if they stuck to their roots.
Mushroom dish was unpalatable. Steak and venison were cooked well. Again nothing that was a WOW! Mediocre at best.
Clean and quiet place. Very friendly staff. Food quality and ingrediendts are excellent - and so is the presentation. Dessert was too good. Overall a great experience.
All Spice is a special place...charming and cozy but private dining experience. The combinations of flavors are only surpassed by the presentation of the dishes. The fixed price selections make it a fun way to dine and taste several dishes...small enough to enjoy everything, but satisfying enough to feel like a completely exquisite meal.
This is one of my favorite places to dine with my husband or to bring other foodies who enjoy a quiet place for conversation, good and knowledgeable service, and fine dining in a charming atmosphere.
I love love love the food at All Spice! It’s as good as any Michelin Star restaurant I’ve been to. The one and only place on the Peninsula where you can get high caliber cuisine and not have to drive into SF. It’s a tiny restaurant, I wish it was bigger so tables were more private. But I love the cozy charm of the old home and the funky decor. The service isn’t always amazing but the wait staff is friendly and not overbearing. Our favorite spot!!
I emailed and called but did not receive anything back. First and foremost, I’ve worked in the service industry for years but have never received such off service myself. The hostess got us a bottle of wine and seated us promptly, took our water order, and left. The server came to our table with water, dropped both bottles unopened at the table, and walked away. 20 minutes later, he returned and said “what do you guys want”. I was here celebrating my birthday and my boyfriend and I looked at each other confused and the server said “sorry. Any questions.” We said no, ordered, and he left. We then ended up dining for over 2.5 hours because the service was wildly slow. He came out once to say “small kitchen” and walked away again. Spending $400 on dinner should be accompanied with excellent service. I hate to leave a bad review, as the food was absolutely impeccable but overall, my experience was quite infuriating.
Always the best!
Great food - great experience!
