Ali Ocakbasi London
My friend and I really enjoyed our first dining experience at Ali Ocakbasi. We both ordered a pizza and shared a salad. We found the staff to be very accommodating, in particular with our food preferences (no cheese and additional toppings). The service was friendly and efficient and we will certainly be back again soon.
Simply put, this place had the best kunafe I've ever eaten. I'd give the kunafe 10 stars!!! The rest of the food was delicious too - perhaps the portions could have been a tiny bit more generous for the price, but hey - this is Leicester Square. Great restaurant - we'll be back!
It is definitely good food but it is a bit overpriced, possibly because of the touristy location.
The true taste of İstanbul
Although we were half hour late and our table was gone, they have accommodated us with an alternative table and the service was very quick due to our request to catch the theatre.
The food was very tasty.
Ali is the best when it comes to Turkish food. They don’t modify or alter the original recipe and this is such a comfort if you are looking for a specific, well-missed taste.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service. Excellent as always.
Really delicious food with lots of flavour and brilliant service, it was in a great location too. We didn’t understand some of the menu (as it was in Turkish) and the waitress was very happy to explain everything to us. Would definitely go back! 👍🏼
Very good food - one of the best kebabs and mezes I have had in the UK - similar quality to the original restaurant in Turkey. But the mezes are not value for money - tasty but small portions with very high prices. Alcoholic beverages are also priced above average. Service was a bit slow.
My friends and I had a lovely evening. The food was fantastic and the service was great.
I am definitely coming back here again. One of the best Turkish restaurants in London
There were not many vegetarian options and while the food was pretty good, the selection is quite limited. Mezzes were very expensive for the portion with no accompanying bread given for dips like hummous and etc. This has to be ordered seperately. No mezze platters available. A selection or set of mezzes made available on the menu or sharing platters would have been good especially for diners who are not familiar with the cuisine to try out small portions of selected mezzes. Service and ambiance was good.
It's Good - Go there!
Despite seeing a few bad reviews on an unnamed website, we decided to go anyway. It is conveniently close to Leicester Square and Trafalgar Square and has all the right ingrediants for a 1st class restaurant including a wait staff that is very attentive.
Clean, warm, not too big the space is great for a small party or an intimate evening (although there are no booths).
The menu is very good and the portions are quite satisfying. Halal, of course; it's menu covered a wide gamut of great entrees and desserts. Traditional balon bread, humus, and baklava are all very good.
Fine Turkish wines (!) round out the menu with other vintners well represented. Did I mention the many types of Raki? Try them all and fly home!
Not overly expensive = ($$) not ($$).
Eat! Be Happy here!
I sat at the patio outside. The staff are great. I love turkey and Turkish people. But I noted that the roses and plants next to the seating area are full of garbage from people who throw it at the plants area. Which is unpleasant.
Great food and service with nice outdoor seating. Will definitely come again and recommend to friends! It would be even more enjoyable if they had some music playing outdoors as well. Overall, great experience!
The food here quality wise was very good! I think the portion size should have been bigger given the price tag. However, this restaurant is based in Leicester Square, and like so many other restaurants in such a touristy kind of area, they are banking on luring in tourists with Sterling Pounds to spend, and also I can't imagine the rates they have to pay are cheap. But putting aside a lack of value for money I must stress the food is good and the location is great. I can think of a number of places in that area that charge heaven and earth but give you basic food. I'm glad we went and if I'm ever in the area I'd definitely go again. Thank you for the meal!
We arrived sharp on time. Nobody greeted us. We went inside to ask about our table. A lady came rushing toward us with menus in hand and told us to sit next to the cashier counter, worst table of all, when the place was half full indoors. She left and we waited for about 15 minutes, time during which several waiters and what we assume to be the manager walked past our table over and over again but never paid absolutely any attention to us. The lady who sat us disappeared. So we decided to take our business elsewhere.
Very upsetting experience. It seems like we were penalized for having booked via Open Table.
True to its original home, except of course the view of Istanbul which cannot be reproduced !
Overall a nice experience.
I don't feel the meal was worth the price. A coke is £3.40pm which is excessive in my opinion and a 12.5% service charge is added on the bill.
The main meal was tasty but portion size soo small. It was mini bite kofte pieces in yogurt and aubergine.
The burghol was tasty.
I would have tipped £2 only as prices were high to begin with but with the 12.5% already added, i felt embarrassed infront of my freind to ask for it to be removed.
very delicious food, great customer service. outside seating is very relaxing and meze selection is lovely,
Delicious meal, excellent service 👌🏻 You must try all of mezes 🤤
The food was nice but nothing amazing and whilst the service was friendly, it took a while for the food to arrive. However it was a great central location and I appreciated being able to book a table outside. Plus it was reasonably priced.
Great location, but the neighbouring TGI, Garfunkels etc should be a clue sadly......
On the positive side, lovely and friendly staff.
However, not very efficient. Multiple requests required for bread despite starters on the table. The gluten free lavash somehow manages to be crispy and taste stale at the same time. Zero flavour to it. In fact with all the starters ordered, none of them had any flavour to them - a first for us with normally delicious Turkish food. Hummus with sausage, came with salami instead - lumpy hummus and salami with a chewy texture but no flavour. Never had salami like that before! Smoked aubergine did not taste smoky or even like aubergine....just nothing really. Give the starters a miss.
The tomato salad was also bizarre, not very fresh look, more like tomato mush. Again no seasoning of flavour to it.
Things got better with the main courses, despite the staff getting the order wrong. Decent barbecuedchicken wings. The minced lamb kebab I ordered was supposed to have pistachio in it, but the wrong one was ordered by wait staff, or perhaps the kitchen was just out of pistachios. Decent salad with the wings and kebab - skip the rice and just ask for more of the rocket, mint and tomato side salad - much tastier than the actual salads.
Gave us free mint tea and baklava. Both very nice. Probably the best part of the meal. Perhaps ignore the meal part, eat somewhere else and then just go for tea/coffee and dessert.
I love Ali Ocakbasi, now I visit every time I am in London (I come on business every couple of months) as it is quite close to my hotel but not like the tourists restaurants in the area. I have never been to Turkey but the food feels authentic and the times I have gone more than half the other diners are Turkish. I would definitely recommend ordering from their grill, it is delicately seasoned and all the kabobs have been great. I normally don’t like minced meat but theirs is not ordinary mince, the minced lamb with pistachio is a great dish and very unique. I also enjoyed all the starters, particularly the humus. Their bread is also very unique, I initially expected pita but it is much lighter and goes very well with the food.
The service is a little awkward. They are nice but do not seem like they are comfortable serving people. They also are frequently not very crowded, which could be good but also a little oft-putting when there is only one other table full (usually with Turks). That said, I hope they become more crowded as I love the food and want them to succeed.
