Alfonso's Mexican Restaurant
Food was good but overpriced
I’ve been dining at Alfonso’s since it opened in the 70’s, and the food has always been consistently good. The chips, guacamole and margaritas are excellent. Now that I’m older, my only complaint with the Solana Beach location is the noise level. We were a party of 7, and I felt that we had to talk very loudly to hear one another. My ears were ringing when I left the restaurant, but my belly was happy with the quality of the food. It’s also a treat to still see Alfonso greeting all of his guests. I know that his personal touch is a reason for the restauarant’s success!
The drinks were not the greatest. The food was average. The service was good
Very pleasant staff and the food was really good, but the singer that night (Saturday) was far too loud. Might be fun for sitting at the bar but not for having an easy conversation - may try again on a different night of the week.
Its all ok, nothing special really, they almost bought us the food before we had ordered it was so fast! Appetizers and mains came all at the same time. Table was too small to accommodate 5 of us and our dishes. All too rushed. If they had been slower we would have enjoyed everything much more and probably ordered another pitcher of margeritas .
Overall as I said ok but its lacking ambiance.
Went for Mother’s Day lunch and everyone left happy. Food was delicious and service was great.
The location is great and the food was delicious! Will definitely be coming back.
Restaurant was recommended by a client of mine since he and his wife had been enjoying the restaurant while it was still located in La Jolla. I was not disappointed in the recommendation. Food was really good. Beer/cocktails were tasty. Definitely a place we will return to!
The service was great
The food was very mediocre.
A long ways from the original Alfonso’s in La Jolla
This was my 1st visit to the new location after going to the old La Jolla locations over 50 times including a college graduation and pre-wedding dinner parties. I regularly ordered the Tostada Supreme for years and took a chance of something else on this visit and I wasn't impressed. Even worse, my $17 margarita was weak and absolutely nothing special. I've had better $5 margaritas many times. What saved this review is my wife ordered the Tostada Supreme and it was excellent. I'll go back but ONLY for try Tostada Supreme.
Good ambience but glad to have reserved a table on patio because they played loud music inside which is not conducive for family conversation. Service was OK, a little bit more attentive would have been more average. Food was mediocre and the $25 carne and shrimp was a disappointment. Attention: presentation matter!!!
Chicken Tostada Supreme was soggy sitting in chicken juice, no crunchy shell with crispy lettuce. The pescado was OK.
I think I get better food from my local takeout Mexican restaurant.
Our second time visiting this location and we were disappointed with the service and food. The waiter took a long time to even acknowledge the two of us, and finally, after ordering drinks, it too way too long to get them delivered. I'm a former server so I usually give people the benefit of the doubt, but I lost patience. The food was not worth another lengthy wait: leathery, dry carne asada; rubbery, bland shrimp; dry carnitas, very skimpy on the guacamole. We won't be back.
Great food and great service, I’m glad we chose this place.
The tortilla chips were not crisp but soggy. The soups and entrees were fine.
The food was just ok. The (house) margaritas were ok. Service was ok. The bill was astronomical compared to the amount/quality of food and drinks we ordered. If you like live music, that was probably the best part of our Friday night dinner experience. In summary, this place offers nothing to write home about and we won't be returning.
I was greeted at door. The bar was fun and Alphonso's daughter a pleasure to talk to!
Nice happy hour menu and margaritas just like 40 years ago in La Jolla.
Still a nice place after many years
Met friends and family we haven’t see in awhile.
Food and Margaritas were great!
Empty went for breakfast
We were the only people took a log time fir the server to come in. Got the chips and salsa was not bad but no napkins or silverware till I had to go look for it . The breakfast : the shredded beef was so dry ( burned or old ) we had to return and ask for fresh plate . My eggs were no taste . I did not they moved from La Jolla I was happy to discover this iconic restaurant . But this was nothing like the quality in there . Will never go back there . Very very bad
Awesome place for good food, great margaritas and fun company.
Slow service. Food not up to the standards we experienced at their old location.
Haven't been to the new location in Solana Beach, but it was great. New decor, great menu and awesome margaritas.. definitely recommend paying a visit. The live music was an unexpected treat
Very enjoyable and Friendly. Staff and Ownership make you feel at home.
Love the Friendliness . Very good service. Excellant menuh
The bar was good, the food was good Mexican fair - however, if you are going to offer upscale steak & lobster - it needs to be prepared properly. The folks that ordered basic burritos were satisfied.
Another great Mexican Restaurant. We’ll be going back.
Pretty good local mexican place in beautiful Solana Beach CA but beware of the noise. If that’s a bother maybe someplace else?
Very noisy with a limited menu fr different from Alfonso's La Jolla.
Still good food after 35 years. New location but okay. Miss La Jolla though.
Great food. Miss the La Jolla location.
I love Alfonso's because many times he personally greets you and makes sure everything is good. I had the Alfonso quesadilla which was packed with a variety of veggies and came with both quacamole and sour cream. It was yummy. And although they have large screen tvs, I also enjoy the live music on the weekends. Prices are reasonable and there is a variety or seating, both indoors & out. May bueno.
Friendly staff and great decor are just two of the many things great about this restaurant. Authentic Mexican food with a twist at times-like a side of fresh salad instead of rice and beans. Dog friendly outdoor space with views of Highway 101 Cedros Design District beautiful landscaping or the cool design of the interior. Live music Tuesdays, mellow sounds. Go!!
Lovely ambiance, lovely waitress called Sandra who explained the menu so that we could make great decisions - the shrimp starter was refreshing and full of flavor, we tried all the different tacos and the fish and beef were the best; this was all washed down with a nice bottle of wine.
The churro dessert was a huge hit too :)
Gave this restaurant two chances- no more. Food silly lacks anything special.
Great place and great food!!!
We have been going to Alphonso's in La Jolla since 1979 and miss it so much we had to make Solana Beach our new go to for Mexican Food and Margarita's that are second to none.
Love the local atmosphere of this restaurant and the live music. Food is pretty good and service is great. Alfonso, himself, greeted us. It's so special when the owner takes pride in checking on his guests.
Very welcoming place. Food was very good. Great service. A nice short walk to the Amtrak station.
Food not that great. It was ok , edible, but I wouldn't come especially here for Mexican food. There are much better Mexican places around San Diego.
