Have not seen service like this in years. Alexander's staff really take great care of their patrons. Great beef with a east meets west twist. There is a lot of items to tickle your taste buds. I would recommend Alexander's to anyone who is a beef lover.
Wagyu too expensive. The 5A steak is good as a "once-in-a-lifetime" thing but too overvalued.
We were expecting way more than what we got...
We payed over $700.00 for a dinner for 2 people and left really disappointed.
We both work in the industry, so I guess we just expected too much.
Great ambiance and service but the steak was warm, not hot. We were impressed by the ambiance and the service we received. The food was a little pricy but it was to be expected. When the steak came, however, we weren’t impressed. It was warm. For a restaurant of that caliber, we’d expect the steak to come out piping hot and on a super hot plate. My plate was cold and the steak was warm. We could have gotten that kind of steak at sizzler’s. Like said, great service but the food was not worth what we paid for. We will not be going back. There are much better places for steak in the city.
Menu seemed somewhat limited compared with my memory of dining here before but the food we had was excellent.
Our server Israel was excellent. He recommended good items to pair as well as recommending steak cuts cooked at best the temperature. Israel also recommended a lovely crafted cocktail based on my preferences. The food. The hamachi shot, red leaf salad, grilled octopus were all good. We also had the wagyu bao which in my opinion took quite a bit of time to come out of the kitchen. The chimichurri fries were extremely salty and I am person who generally uses salt on everything. I will say that last minute before our mains came out I ordered the octopus. This may have held up our mains being served due to order in which things should be served to us. However our filet mignon and our other 19 oz. Steak and black truffle mash came out looking as though they had been sitting under a heat lamp. The mash had a dry looking layer on top and both steaks were slightly warm and also had that layer on top of the meats. The lack of warmth of steaks was really the disappointing part.
Service has improved greatly. Great experience this time.
Great food and atmosphere. Staff is extremely helpful and friendly.
Best steak in SF...best experience in CA.
The whole experience was great except that the prices are too high comparing that you can get the same service and quality food for a lot less at competitive steak houses.
Alexander's is consistently amazing!
Have been to Alexander's dozens and dozens of times. This visit was not what i expected. Service was consistently poor at every touchpoint and the food was below the standards i expect for a $500 meal for three that did not include any alcohol or Wagu-type meat.
First, there was an appetizer of broth with tortellini pushed on the group that ended up just being a few ounces of over-salted bone broth with 4-6 micro-sized tortellini for ~$20/bowl. The appetizer was so over-salted that no one at the table could eat more than a spoonful or two. Further, the nonalcoholic drinks and water emptied in the glasses to the point that on two occasions we had to leave the table and walk to find someone to refill the drinks. Dirty plates sat on the table for extended periods as well. Alexanders usually serves bread or rolls, but they were never served to our table, but as we left the restaurant at the end of the meal we noticed other tables being served small cheese biscuits/rolls throughout the meal.
After so many visits over the years to Alexanders, it just seems service and quality are now being neglected. The restaurant used to have a wonderful bread course experience that included a number of different types of bakes goods throughout he meal. That bread course was discontinued a year or so ago it seems. I put that aside and kept visiting Alexanders either with direct reservations or suggesting others reserve tables there for events I attend. I visit Alexanders 6-8 times per year.
It is disappointing to see this restaurant in a period of decline.
Chefs tasting menu needs love... An overall disappointment
The cuts are always precise and delicious! The service is impeccable.
Alexander's is a a fine restaurant establishment and our go to place for all celebrations. It never disappoints. We took our friends there for the first time and they were thrilled with the food and the service!
Overall the restaurant was just okay. For what it's supposed to be - an upscale restaurant featuring the best steaks and great service - I believe they under-delivered.
My girlfriend and I arrived early for our 9pm reservations and was told we would have to wait for our table. No problem. We ordered a couple drinks from the bar and we were having a nice evening. A little after 9pm, we were told we could be seated. Upon getting to the table, it wasn't ready, so we had to go back to the bar area again. Again no problem, but I did notice there was another table available right next to our's which was already set. Thinking that it may have been reserved for another party, I didn't say anything. After an hour, the table next to us was still unoccupied, so I wasn't pleased that they made us wait at the bar for as long as they did. Eventually another party was seated there, but by then the restaurant was only about 50% occupied given the late reservations.
The service was mostly good until the end, which I will get to shortly. The waiter was very pleasant and friendly. The food was just okay. Maybe even less than okay. I surely expected much better given what it's supposed to be and the cost. Our bill for two drinks, the bone-in filet mignon and T-bone steaks with 2 sides was $430. That included a 20% tip.
At the end of the evening, both of us had about 1/2 of our portions left to take home. They took them away to have them boxed and they left a numbered tag for us to use to pick it up on the way out. The next day, we were looking forward to our leftover steak, but much to our disappointment, only one of our steak portions was there. The half of the filet mignon that should have been boxed up wasn't.
I'm not usually one to complain about such things, but given the cost and expectations, we expected more. We did leave a 20% tip on $350+ bill so needless to say, we felt a little bit cheated. Definitely not a good experience. There are better steakhouses out there.
Girlfriend ordered 3 hamachi shots for herself. She liked.
Amazing place !
We attended Alexander's for my husband's birthday. The food was incredible, the ambiance was bright (unlike those horribly outdated dark steakhouses), it was lively but quiet enough to enjoy a conversation, and the service was outstanding. Highly recommend it.
Very pleased we chose this for our Xmas Eve meal whilst visiting San Francisco. Excellent size portions, very attentive but understated service ( there when you needed but not hovering which I like) From entering until leaving everything was an experience and I must recommend a drink at the bar first. Truely exceptional skills on show in the drinks dept. Steaks were cooked to perfection. I had a ribeye and my wife the Wagyu. Would well recommend it to steak lovers.
Steak knives need sharpening, $85 rib eye too tough. Server GREAT.
Omg the food was amazing!! I have eaten at a lot of good places in the Bay Area and a number of really good steakhouses. But Alexander’s beat them all. Not only were the steaks good, but also everything else! The mashed potatoes and shishito peppers were to die for!
My husband and I got their tasting menu, and our kids ordered steaks. Usually they ask that the entire table go for tasting but that made an exception since it was the kids. We also got a 3oz wagyu steak to share, since we were there, and I though that was the only thing that didn’t impress me so much especially considering it cost an arm and a leg ;) don’t get me wrong, the steak was delicious but just not worth the price.
It’s definitely a pricey place, so prepare yourself, but it was hands down the best food I have had in the Bay Area, and I have tried plenty of good places all over the world!
The service was impeccable as well. It was my son’s 13th birthday, he got a bday card upon arrival, and a cake with a candle after dinner. They also gave my daughter the same cake as well. I thought that was a nice touch. Our server was amazing, he made sure to check on us, top off our wine at the right times, and was very attentive.
Definitely a must-go, but save it for a special occasion!
We come here annually and Alexander's never disappoints. The signature drinks, unique foods and steaks make this one of our favorite places in San Francisco.
We celebrated our engagement earlier in the day, and topped it off with an incredible meal at Alexander's. The team over there - Sky and Kyle in particular - went out of their way to make our evening magical. The Hitachi menu was befitting the occasion, the service was attentive, the well-wishes from the front of house made us feel really welcome, and the food was beyond delicious. We'll absolutely return, now that Alexander's has such a special place in our story! Thank you!
I don't feel the price was worth it and it needed more options. I have been to many steakhouses and each had great options for people who don't want steak (I get it, it's a steakhouse) but at least some shrimp or crab dishes on the menu would be nice. They had one fish dish and it was about a 3" by 4" piece and it was $43...that is just ridiculous! My husband said the steak tasted good but he has had better at the other steakhouses. I probably won't come back.
Awful. Will never come back. Couldn’t order what we wanted from the menu. Our server had a terrible attitude. And the food was awful.
The service is top notch. The food is very good but just a little too overpriced. First time here. May return it is close to home,. I prefer however other steak houses like Harris's on Van Ness.
We arrived at the Steakhouse Monday 12/9/19 a few minutes early and was greeted so warmly by the hostess that I was surprised. She immediately seated us and we were then promptly greeted by a waiter that was so nice. We were then promptly greeted by a waiter who was so very kind and explained the menu in great detail.
We ordered the bone in filet which was probably the very best steak I have ever eaten along with some sides that were scrumptious.
I was very impressed with the hostess, wait staff and the over all ambiance. We will be back.
Having eaten at some of the finest dining establishments in the U.S. I cant say enough about Alexanders. My hat is off to the General Manager AND the entire staff for making a special night even more special.
Thank you - Ric Overton
The server Kyle was excellent, however we ordered the hitachi dining experience and I was not impressed with the flavors of the dishes serval things were over salted and just didn’t compliment the dish. We also order the wine pairing and most of the pours came out late or after the dishes had already been served which was a little strange. Not what I would expect for a 1,000 dollar dinner. I doubt we will return unfortunately.
