The Alexander Brown Restaurant
The Alexander Brown building has called the corner of Baltimore and Calvert Street home for over a century, providing an epicenter of banking and business to the City of Baltimore. Centuries have passed, and Alexander Brown & Sons has since been purchased by a national bank, but the Brown family still owns the building today.
In 2019, this iconic building is opening a new chapter with a different type of commerce as The Alexander Brown Restaurant. Although banking will no longer take place within the historic walls, The A.B. will deal in the currency of conversation and community. At The A.B., we look forward to providing a historic setting for modern conversation, phenomenal food, and worldly design for guests from near and far.
Beautiful restaurant, wonderful food. Perfect for a special occasion!
The setting of the room is lovely (although the restaurant was empty), but the food was mediocre. The $18 AB Chopped Salad was a plate of greens, a few pieces of chicken, two very small slices of avocado, and a tiny bit of the other promised ingredients that were hard to find under the greens (goat cheese, pumpkin seeds, figs, etc). It was surprisingly tasteless and certainly not filling--more like a side salad and not a main course lunch. I went home hungry. Maybe dinner lives up to the hype!
Absolutely would recommend this restaurant. We sat in the beautiful front room. Plan was to have a drink at the bar and then to the table. Phillip the bartender was so friendly and kind we decided to eat at the bar. Awesome experience. Made our 35th wedding anniversary extra special. Thank you all at Alexander Brown.
Rick was our waiter, and he was great. Everything about our celebration was fantastic.
Beautiful historic building but needs work in the food department. We found our variety of food to be average. Hopefully since the restaurant is less than a year old, the food will improve.
The restaurant is absolutely beautiful. The menu is limited, but everything we ordered was excellent. Our waiter, Clement, was very poised, responsive and professional. I thoroughly enjoyed dining at the AB.
Very good food, attentive service. Great decor and interior design
Spectacular location and decor. Service was well intended but seemed inexperienced.
Couldn’t have been happier with the experience, cheers!
Wonderful restaurant, great food and service. Would definitely return for another meal.
Excellent food and service - our waitress was great - pleasant and very informative.
Valet parking is a hidden secret but once found the building and interior are gorgeous. Service was complicated by a pleasant but untrained waitstaff. The portions are quite small but what was served was delicious. Will return in 6 months to see if there is any improvement.
Though I have lunched at Alexander Brown, this was my first dinner. The food and service are good but not outstanding. Nothing that we ordered stood out. Our server was nice but inexperienced. We ordered bottles of wine but no one on the restaurant staff offered to assist in the selection. The restaurant has a ways to go before its food and service are up to the magnificent setting.
All around great meal. Drinks were excellent as were all phases of our dinner. Services was great and would recommend to anyone.
Really enjoyed the ambiance and thought the food was outstanding.
Food and service was very good. Lacking in atmosphere and vibe. Servers uniforms, music, and decor too stuffy and not inviting or pleasing to the eye. Atmosphere generally boring and unfortunately it over-rules the good food and service.
Food was wonderful. Drink service was a little slow.
For an expensive restaurant, it was very disappointing. Service was very slow, which for a business lunch is inexcusable. I ordered quiche with a salad, which was served to me with a huge side of French fries. It arrived late, after the other guests at the table were served, because of a mix up in the kitchen. I sent the plate back because I was trying to eat healthy and they promptly removed the fries. However, I then bit into the quiche and it was cold! Not just "not hot", but cold! At that point I just ate it instead of sending the plate back for a second time. And my other guests had already finished eating so I didn't want to further delay matters. When it was time to pay, our waiter didn't return, so one of the guests had to walk to the back and find someone who could take our credit card. After paying I saw they had removed the quiche from the check, I guess because of the delay or the fries, because they weren't aware that they had served it to me cold. Maybe there is potential here, but they have a long way to go.
It is worth going to this restaurant just to see the interior of the building. Our waitress was very helpful and friendly, but it took a long time to get our food on the table. We went for lunch, and the meal took two hours. I would go back again with someone who has never been there before just so that the person could have the dining experience.
Our waiter Christopher was amazing. He gave us really good drink and food recommendations... everything. Was delightful.
Food good drinks very good
Might recommend depending on what friends are looking for. It is a beautiful space with a generally good, straight-forward menu. The "energy" is a bit subdued (perhaps like an investment banking house?) Diners are spread through 3 rooms so it isn't obvious that the place is busy which may not send the right signal. Prices are fine. Service is a bit overly fussy - a lot of information, a bit a "sell" but all done with sincere enthusiasm. Overall, it's good but not sure if it's destined to be really good. Difficult location and access.
Great restaurant!! Great food!! Great cocktails!! Great service!! Wonderful old historical building with lots of stories that the staff and manager are eager to share. We were given a building and kitchen tour. Beautiful art work!! Kitchen was spotless!! Highly recommend this lovely restaurant.
Probably my worst dining experience ever, at least in what was supposed to be a high end restaurant. The restaurant itself is beautiful and in an important historical building. The service was dismal, indifferent and unfriendly. We were not offered wine or drinks for 40 minutes. I finally found our server, and we ordered wine. When the wine finally came after another 15 minutes wait, she recognized that she had brought the wrong wine. We waited another 10 minutes for the correct wine to come and be poured. The wedge salad was runny and tasteless. The pasta and the Bronzino were bland. The fish tacos were ok. The desserts were not worth the calories, and were only partially eaten. We could not find the valet attendant, and had to ask someone in the Restaurant to find him. So all of that took about 15 minutes. This was my fourth visit, and the other times were a bit better. We had convinced our neighbors to join us....they were reluctant to go downtown. We were very embarrassed to have taken them. We really want the AB to make it, but don’t see that happening unless major improvements are made quickly.
Fantastic service, excellent food and gorgeous setting. Perfect for special occasions but a bit pricey for frequent visits. We hope to return
Great tour as well!
Kevin was very nice but may have had too many tables in his station. The experience started out great but faded as the attention fell off dramatically once our order was taken.
Lovely to see a new restaurant that reflects the atmosphere of more elegant times with a contemporary flair. Great ambiance with a varied menu that doesn’t break the bank.
Unusual and good fish tacos. Lovely setting.
My husband and I went to Alexander Brown for our 19th anniversary dinner. Our experience was a mixed bag. Although the menu was not extensive it had some nice options that we were looking forward to trying. We ordered cocktails, but our appetizers arrived before the cocktails and we had to ask for the waitress to check on the status of our drinks. We enjoyed our starters of salmon mousse deviled eggs and crab beignets. Once our starters were taken away our entrees arrived immediately and my husband hadn't even finished his cocktail. We then needed to request the wine. The wine was supposed to be cellar temperature, but it was still really too warm. We asked for it to be chilled a little, which the waitress was happy to do. However, when it was brought back the wine still felt to be the same temperature or very little difference. Our entree's were delicious. The skirt steak with chimichurri sauce was divine and the seared scallops were cooked perfectly. Dessert was the apple napoleon with caramel sauce which was delicious. Our waitress, although she tried to do her job, did not live up to expectations of fine dining. We both agreed we would go back again in the future, but not running to go back too soon. Our dining experience felt rushed even though it was a Monday night and the restaurant was relatively quiet. Not quite the experience we were hoping for an anniversary fine dining experience.
What a wonderful surprise. Rich was a very professional server, and his recommendations were spot on. From the salad to the entree, the Brussels spout side and the smoked ice cream, everything was lovely.
Everything was very good. Would highly recommend for a special occasion. A little expensive for dinner on a regular basis.
the place is beautiful and i hope they can get their act together. drinks and apps were delicious. entrees came out in phases and we were 6 people who basically didn't eat an expensive dinner together. one entree was ice cold when it came out and another (scallops) we raw (cold in the center). they comped some drinks and gave us gift cards to give it another try. i really want this place to succeed but can't lie about our evening there.
Great meal in a beautiful room oozing atmosphere. Professional, friendly, and attentive service. A delightful evening and I look forward to returning soon.
Thought the food was very nice, attentive service, delicious cocktail. Overall a nice experience and would recommend it to anyone.
Excellent service. Attentive and informed server. Respected that we had theatre tickets and meal service was prompt. Food was delicious. All in all a perfect place to dine.
This restaurant is so cool and I love the atmosphere! The food was delicious and rich. My only critique is that I felt slightly rushed, although the waiter was very attentive and pleasant.
its was my birthday, i was out dining with family and friends. the food and waitress were wonderful , hopefully in the future the restaurant will be more mindful of its patrons and why they’re dining at their establishment, when everyone clearly knew including open table this was a birthday event. thanks for a beautiful and tasteful dinner.
Elegant and classic. We were there early before a lecture, and had the place to ourselves.
Have dined there for dinner twice and now once for lunch. Every meal and experience was great.
