The Alexander Brown Restaurant
The Alexander Brown building has called the corner of Baltimore and Calvert Street home for over a century, providing an epicenter of banking and business to the City of Baltimore. Centuries have passed, and Alexander Brown & Sons has since been purchased by a national bank, but the Brown family still owns the building today.
In 2019, this iconic building is opening a new chapter with a different type of commerce as The Alexander Brown Restaurant. Although banking will no longer take place within the historic walls, The A.B. will deal in the currency of conversation and community. At The A.B., we look forward to providing a historic setting for modern conversation, phenomenal food, and worldly design for guests from near and far.
Kevin was very nice but may have had too many tables in his station. The experience started out great but faded as the attention fell off dramatically once our order was taken.
Lovely to see a new restaurant that reflects the atmosphere of more elegant times with a contemporary flair. Great ambiance with a varied menu that doesn’t break the bank.
Unusual and good fish tacos. Lovely setting.
My husband and I went to Alexander Brown for our 19th anniversary dinner. Our experience was a mixed bag. Although the menu was not extensive it had some nice options that we were looking forward to trying. We ordered cocktails, but our appetizers arrived before the cocktails and we had to ask for the waitress to check on the status of our drinks. We enjoyed our starters of salmon mousse deviled eggs and crab beignets. Once our starters were taken away our entrees arrived immediately and my husband hadn't even finished his cocktail. We then needed to request the wine. The wine was supposed to be cellar temperature, but it was still really too warm. We asked for it to be chilled a little, which the waitress was happy to do. However, when it was brought back the wine still felt to be the same temperature or very little difference. Our entree's were delicious. The skirt steak with chimichurri sauce was divine and the seared scallops were cooked perfectly. Dessert was the apple napoleon with caramel sauce which was delicious. Our waitress, although she tried to do her job, did not live up to expectations of fine dining. We both agreed we would go back again in the future, but not running to go back too soon. Our dining experience felt rushed even though it was a Monday night and the restaurant was relatively quiet. Not quite the experience we were hoping for an anniversary fine dining experience.
What a wonderful surprise. Rich was a very professional server, and his recommendations were spot on. From the salad to the entree, the Brussels spout side and the smoked ice cream, everything was lovely.
Everything was very good. Would highly recommend for a special occasion. A little expensive for dinner on a regular basis.
the place is beautiful and i hope they can get their act together. drinks and apps were delicious. entrees came out in phases and we were 6 people who basically didn't eat an expensive dinner together. one entree was ice cold when it came out and another (scallops) we raw (cold in the center). they comped some drinks and gave us gift cards to give it another try. i really want this place to succeed but can't lie about our evening there.
Great meal in a beautiful room oozing atmosphere. Professional, friendly, and attentive service. A delightful evening and I look forward to returning soon.
Thought the food was very nice, attentive service, delicious cocktail. Overall a nice experience and would recommend it to anyone.
Excellent service. Attentive and informed server. Respected that we had theatre tickets and meal service was prompt. Food was delicious. All in all a perfect place to dine.
This restaurant is so cool and I love the atmosphere! The food was delicious and rich. My only critique is that I felt slightly rushed, although the waiter was very attentive and pleasant.
its was my birthday, i was out dining with family and friends. the food and waitress were wonderful , hopefully in the future the restaurant will be more mindful of its patrons and why they’re dining at their establishment, when everyone clearly knew including open table this was a birthday event. thanks for a beautiful and tasteful dinner.
Elegant and classic. We were there early before a lecture, and had the place to ourselves.
Have dined there for dinner twice and now once for lunch. Every meal and experience was great.
We chose the Alexander Brown to celebrate our anniversary, and we have the most wonderful memories from the experience. The pleasantries started with conversations with the young bartender who made us memorable cocktails, and then introduced us to Jeff, the restaurant manager. We exchanged travel experiences with Jeff, and he introduced us to a wine he thought we would enjoy. Our waiter was exceptional - not overly attentive, but always knew the right time to stop by our table. Our overall dining experience was by far the best we have had in Baltimore over the past four years. The steaks were excellently prepared and the sides were amazing. And who even remembers the last dessert you had in a restaurant? And yet, I'm not sure we will ever forget the Apple Napoleon. We were fighting over the last bite!! Honestly Jeff, you are doing so many things right at the AB. We will definitely be back! Jim and Maria
It was a great first time experience for me and my girl on her birthday I would like to come again maybe with friends and family.
This was our first time at the AB Restaurant and we will be back. The inside of the restaurant is lovely and the food was delicious. We had the chicken roulade and rockfish. We had a great server. The only minor complaint was that they knew it was a birthday dinner, brought us a delicious slice of Smith Island cake on the house, but did not put a candle in it or even write happy birthday on the plate. A little celebration is nice. Minor issue in a great evening.
The signature dish is the crab beignet and they are truly delicious.
My wife had salmon and I had a shrimp pasta dish and both were excellent. Salads and desserts were both wonderful.
Kevin, our waiter, was helpful and a delight. A very interesting guy.
The only suggestion I would make to them is to have a variety of breads rather than one rather plain offering.
We had a birthday dinner and it was excellent. The took care of a large party of 12!
Overall good experience. We enjoyed the ambiance, menu and service. The food was great, but a bit lackluster for the
Excellent experience overall
Our waiter Kevin was fantastic! Gave great food suggestions!
This is a great, handsome, historic place for a business lunch!
Gorgeous surroundings, new appealing restaurant. Fish tacos were good but diner must assemble their own, which is a lot of effort for a $20 lunch entree. Excellently cooked and crispy fries. Preferred seating location was not noted from my open table written request but was honored when verbally requested. Parking discount was $21 off $31 cost to park in adjacent Luminaire garage for 2 hours. Some minor kinks but overall good dining experience!
This restaurant is a true gem. We tried it because of their Smith Island cake on our anniversary and were completely blown away with the venue, the amazing cuisine, the impeccable service (in starched white double breasted uniforms no less!) and the sense of history that surrounded us. Good prices too. Oh and that cake was to die for! I never knew Maryland has an official state cake and it's a good one! Go see for yourself.
Beautiful setting. Superior service. Great food! Highly recommend!
I went there to celebrate my husband’s birthday last Saturday. I ordered a filet and my husband ordered Branzino. My steak came out rare when I ordered Medium. It was a big piece. I sent it back and by the time my food arrived my husband was finished with his meal (I told him to eat so his food wouldn’t get cold). The second time my steak was still rare in the middle. The chef doesn’t know how to cook a steak and the staff wasn’t apologetic. The only positive was the drinks and the ambience.
Wonderful experience through and through. Our server, Valerie, was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu and immediacy suggested items based on our cocktail choices. This place has an amazing ambiance and perfect for a girls night out, anniversary dinner or when the parents come into town. Hands down one of the best restaurants in Baltimore.
Better signage out front of restuarant!
Post some info about where to park if people don't want to valet.
Advertise in the business community about private room.
Be a part of the Baltimore Architectural Tour to share the history and beauty of the building and restaurant.
Exceptional cocktails. Attentive service. Great bar.
I won’t recommend until I hear from friends that they’ve had better food experiences than we had. My wife had the filet which we both thought was average and we both felt that my rib-eye was very below average.
Our experience at The Alexander Brown was incredible! Our server, Rich, was amazing, attentive and knowledgeable. The food was perfectly prepared and presented. The wine list is great and the bottle pricing is super reasonable. The experience is additionally elevated by the fact that it is located inside of a historical and beautiful preserved building. Rich was kind enough to give us a tour, talk history, and introduce us to the culinary team. To top of it all off, we were given a complimentary glass of champagne as we just got married the night before and it was our first dinner as a married couple. We found AB on a whim and it ended up being the most wonderful evening! So many thanks to Rich and the whole team for making it special. Cheers!
The service was fast and efficient, the food was incredible, very well worth the price excellent choice!
The drinks were wonderful and well made, and the wine choice was delectable and delightfull. Thank you what a wonderful place!.
The ambiance was outstanding. Beautiful marble walls and columns, a stained glass dome, and original paintings are just a few of the sights that await you in his landmark establishment. We had diner celebrating our 34th wedding anniversary and it was fantastic. The manager took us on a tour of the building and explained it's rich history. The Arugula salad was to die for. We would definitely visit again when in Baltimore.
We had a lovely evening at the Alexander Brown. Gorgeous setting, friendly and competent staff. Most food good. Crab beignets outstanding. Two fish entrees good but sort of plain. Shrimp pasta fair at best. First French fries were very salty and then replacement ones were cold. Coffee ice cream outstanding, rest of desserts ok.
Dining at The Alexander Brown is perfect for a special occasion...they make you feel special. And the prices are extremely reasonable for the experience. Great food, great staff, great atmosphere.
The restaurant is beautiful. The food and service were both excellent. We will go back often.
but only with the caveat that the food is mediocre despite the glorious ambience
Great meal. And our server Keegan was very good.
This was our new favorite restaurant... until the chef left. The new menu is not nearly as inventive. For example, the Salmon entree used to come paired with Beluga lentils, Romesco sauce and a fried Squash Blossom. The Salmon on the new menu was simply a piece of fish on a plate. Disappointed.
