About Alex H
Alex H was originally opened as “Gourmateque Restaurant” in 1982, located on St-Hubert street, it was already making headlines for it’s great food. Most notably the home made lasagna, still found on our menu on occasion. The man behind this was Alex himself.
Alex already had restaurant experience from some of Montreal’s greatest, such as, the Royal Embassy, Mother Martin, Grand Motor hotel, Elmridge country club, and the Ritz Carlton to name a few. Alex had decided he would want to offer the same fine dining experience at a more affordable rate.
Established in 1990, the original Alex H (on Monkland street) was family run for 10 years, until 2000, when it moved to Sherbrooke street where it is still found today.
Today a family trio runs the kitchen, Alex, his daughter Maria, and his son Edward. Every night they cook your meals with pride we hope you’ll take the chance to experience the pride and care that goes into making every dish at Alex H. Please BYO Liquor.

We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at this restaurant. The menu is small but that is one of its strengths. We were amazed at the quality of the food and the reasonableness of the cost. It is a bring your own wine establishment which makes it all the more affordable and allows one to spend a bit extra on an entree and dessert without breaking the budget. We both had their "Magret de canard sauce à l'orange avec figues" for a main which included either a soup or salad. We chose soup which was a lovely borst. We also shared a wonderful entree made with lobster and two deserts which were delightful with coffee. The total cost including 25% tip was less than $120.00. We were very impressed.
Thank you OPENTABLE for my reservation. As always my friend and I have the most wonderful meal. We are regular clients and we love everything about ALEX H. The restaurant feels like you are in Paris (France) not too many frills and the menu is small. THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Everything is delicious, service always impeccable. Tables set up with snow white tablecloths, real napkins etc.
I cannot praise ALEX H. enough for the delicious/inventive food.
BRAVO ALEX H. We live in the 'hood' so you can be assured we will be back for another awesome meal really soon.

We booked on Open Table and phoned later to request one of the window seats (I find these quieter and more comfortable). As we were a party of four, they gave us the larger of the two which was quite suitable. The menu at Alex H is relatively short and predictable which, if it suits your taste on a particular evening, works out very well. The food was excellent as was the service. The prices are very reasonable for a bring your own wine restaurant, so I would say excellent value. We go regularly and will continue.
Disappointing. We have had very good experiences in the past, Portions were much smaller. And my bavette was so tough and almost impossible to eat. Waitress made no attempt to accommodate my concern. She had assured me beforehand that the "bavette was very good".
From start to finish by far the best dining experience I have ever received. The staff was attentive and quickly delivered on any request we made. The food was out of this world delicious and cooked to perfection!! Would definitely return and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fantastic gourmet meal at an affordable price!!
I wanted to really love this place. My soup was amazing but my companion's starter salad was uninspired (lettuce and grape tomato). My salmon was cooked perfectly but the vegetables were icy cold and the corn had obviously been sitting in the pot all day ..wrinkled and soft. My friends bavette de boeuf was ok (though we had to wait over 10 min to get a steak knife) and she had the same icy veg. The creme brule was charred to a crisp and inedible though the creme was lovely. However, the restaurant was kind and did not charge us for the dessert. Our server was sweet but it took almost 40 min for her to open our wine and bring us bread. Maybe it's because it was a Saturday night? Prices were very good but I doubt we'll go back.
This was a third time I visited this restaurant. I have always enjoyed my meal but this time,my dining partner was disappointed with her main course flank steak as it was not appealing , stringy and not cooked to her liking. The restaurant was nice about it and offered her another main course instead.
Nous sommes allés pour célèbrer une occasion spéciale. La nourriture était bonne mais pas extraordinaire. Les portions étaient inégales, par exemple on avait le choix de frites ou patates douces: plein de frites ou 4 petits morceaux de patates douces! Les deux goûtaient la même chose: trop épicé. La soupe était cependant succulente. Le plus décevant a été que tous les desserts contenaient des œufs, même la mousse au chocolat. Aucun effort n'a été fait pour tenter de nous accommoder. J'ai bien aimé l'ardoise pour le menu, un peu moins l'écran télé affichant le menu! En bref, ça ne vaut pas le détour.
Food was absolutely dreadful. We were 6 family members celebrating a special occasion, and I picked Alex H as I had been there two times in the last 8 months, with both times having satisfactory meals. On one occasion I had the duck which was superb. Not so this time. Mussels weren't fresh, filet was lousy, bavette drowned in sickly sweet porto sauce, carrot soup with overpowering ginger, etc, etc. etc. Will not go back!
Have been going here for many years and I like to try new gourmet delights. I highly recommend the baby beef liver, the veal chop, the duck breast, and everything else on the menu. The service is excellent, and you are never disappointed looking forward to my next visit.
