American
Located at 40 Brattle Street in Harvard Square, Alden & Harlow serves thoughtfully sourced, honest American food in a subterranean, modern and comfortable space. Replicating the style of cooking he does for family and friends in his home kitchen, Chef Michael Scelfo prepares humble, unpretentious food that honors tradition of place in its quality. It's how he connects with anyone who joins them at their table.

While reservations are strongly suggested, we also save a portion of the dining room and bar for walk-ins in the event that your request cannot be accommodated. So please, come on in!

Parties of more than 8, please call to make a reservation.

We had an amazing corner table in the main dining room, which really added to the experience. The vibe in the room was casual and bustling without being too noisy or crowded ever. Our reservation was at 6:30p which was too late to get the burger on a Saturday night which was a bummer. The food was all delicious, nothing spectacular though... think it might be better to go with a larger group so you can try more things from the wide-ranging menu. Cocktails were EXCELLENT.

First and foremost, food and service were great. No bad remarks there. We found the lighting a bit too dark and the size/location of our table the thing we’d want to change if we had the option.

Food is phenomenal and you don’t feel like you aren’t receiving the quantity you paid for, which is a concern at some tapas-style establishments.

The place is a a creative sprawl from starting at the the front entrance. You walk in and it doesn’t look that spacious, but the path through the restaurant winds into a wider atrium.

The service comes at your table from all sides, with various memebers of the staff clearing your plates and bringing more stuff out in timely fashion.

The atmosphere was really buzzing without being too loud, and for a Valentine’s Day date, I don’t think I could have picked a better place.

The food here is very good. Lamb belly was a favorite but nothing was bad. Party of four all agreed: too much salt on a couple of the dishes.

My guest loves unusual food and is able to discern subtle flavors. She was delighted with everything we tried and was inspired to think of new dishes that she wants to prepare for herself. Our server could tell that she wanted to explore the menu and chat, so we were given plenty of time to do so ... even though the restaurant was quite busy. Keep in mind that when Alden and Harlow is full it's pretty noisy, so go early if you want to have more of a chat. Although I've been here many times, I'm always surprised by new dishes that I enjoy. Check it out!

Our visit to Alden and Harlow was great! One member of our party was on crutches and could not sit at a high top table. The hostess was very kind and accommodating about this. Although we were only a party of 4, she gave us a table for 6 so that we could have a low rise table. The waitress gave us great suggestions and was very responsive to our needs. The innovative menu had lots of options and the food was absolutely delicious. The chestnut tortelloni, smoked trout, and brussel sprouts were the stand outs.

Too much salt. Food very fussy. Really great server but she recommended two dishes per person which was way too much food. Most dishes are bigger than traditional Tapas. Good wine, beer and cocktail choices. Dessert not good. They offered to take it off bill. Lovely ambience. Might go for drinks and snack but won't go out of my way.

Each dish was well crafted and individual. The waitress provided a warm friendly service that made us feel truly welcome. We gave 4 stars because we are being to feel that the noise levels in many restaurants including this one limit how much relaxing one can do. Meaning that one cannot entirely relax and enjoy while simultaneously making sure one's voice is loud enough to be heard by the person on the other side of the table and while straining a bit to be sure one hears what that person says.

Took my brother for his 31st birthday for brunch with our two year old daughter. Food is as wonderful daytime as for dinner and they even had crayons and a coloring book. Definitely especially lovely to sit under the atrium/skylight space with the living walls.

Our first time, I would recommend making a reservation early otherwise you will be limited in your time options will be few although I understand they reserve some tables for walk ins . Our reservation was 5:15 and by 5:30 the place was near full it was a Friday. Waiter was great explained about the small plates and recommended amounts to get. The steak dinner was delicious and flavorful would highly recommend my husband had hamburger was happy. As our waiter explained snacks , small plates , dinners are made to serve so you must understand if you order dinners , they might not come out exactly together. My steak was worth waiting for. Would highly recommend Alden & Harlow, they don’t rush you , many interesting snacks and tapas

Our dining experience at Alden & Harlow was AMAZING. I took my boyfriend there for his birthday dinner, and we ended up requesting seats at the bar that were available. The atmosphere is very lively + even a little sexy... makes for a great date spot or celebratory dinner spot with a group. It can be a little loud, but we don't mind that. The cocktails were great and every single dish that we ordered was better than the next. The tuna crudo, the burrata, the tortellini, the duck, the smoked trout... every single bite was phenomenal. The service was also amazing. Everyone was so accommodating and nice. Since we sat at the bar, we were served by the bartender and he was awesome, even sent us over some birthday shots on the house :)

10/10 would recommend for a special night out.

I never write reviews, but feel I'm obligated to after my experience last night. I arrived on time for my reservation, but needed to wait about 15 minutes for my date. I was seated right away and ordered a cocktail while I waited. 90's hip hip was playing quietly in the background as I waited...Outkast, Pharcyde, A Tribe Called Quest. Once my date arrived, we were ready to order more cocktails, and put in our order for dinner. Our waitress told us to order everything @ once and they would know when to bring everything out. She was right! She actually got us started with pickled green beans (which we didn't even order), and we snacked on these while our other plates were being prepared. We started with the amazing kale salad. As we were having our last couple bites, the clam's made their way out. Right as we were finishing up the clams, our waitress stopped by with 2 spoons and suggested that we dive in and finish the amazing sauce that the clams rested in. What a move!! We finished the clams right as our corn pancakes made their way out which were followed by the pork belly. I was looking forward to the pork belly ever since I previewed the menu, but this was my least favorite dish that was served. I think the kale salad that we started with set the bar so high, that even the delicious pork belly was just ok. The service is what really stood out. Our glasses of water were constantly filled, the timing of each plate was impeccable, and our waitress was on point making us feel welcome & comfortable (as well as comfortable with our drink and meal choices!). I'll definitely be back again and will be suggesting Alden & Harlow to friends. Thanks!

My fiancé and I went to dinner for our anniversary (just like we did last year) and we were blown away. We knew to expect great food and excellent service, but we were not expecting complimentary champagne once we got to our table! Not only that, when we finished our meal and ordered dessert they brought it out with a candle! Those small touches are what made the meal so special and we will DEFINITELY celebrate more special occasions at Alden & Harlow in the future.

Alden and Harlow is consistently providing high quality, delicious, creative and inventive food. I have been here quite a few times and make a point of ordering the dishes i've never seen before. Each dish has some element that is whimsical, non conventional, and delightful. Sometimes these whimsical additions aren't exactly how I'd like a dish but on the majority of the dishes it works well and appreciate the intention. Great service and ambiance- highly recommend.

This was one of the best meals I've ever had. The immediate knowledge of the gluten-free options is always huge for both me and my girlfriend, who has celiacs. Most servers we have hit us with something like, "I think we can do that" or "uhh, let me go ask the chef." Not here. Our server took out her pen and marked up the menu, clearly marking what was gluten free and what was not, along with the modifications on certain meals they could make. That confidence makes a world of difference to us.

I enjoy the welcome, atmosphere and food at Alden and Harlow. I have two problems, however. One is that waiters always advise ordering two or three plates per person. This, in my experience, would be way too much. I feel they are trying to push customers into ordering more. The second issue is that for $14, I expect a decent sized glass of wine. My large glass was filled perhaps to 1/8th of the capacity. I actually asked the waitress, as I was ordering a second glass (having finished the first rather too soon), what the "standard pour" is for the restaurant. She said "5 ounces" which is a stingy standard, and proceeded to pour the same small amount in my glass. I am sure it was not even 5 ounces. Upstairs at Longfellow Bar, where we went after dinner, the bartender used the same wine glass but served nearly twice as much wine. Please don't take advantage of customers.

Tonight, we visited Longfellow (Alden's upstairs sister) for a few small plate apps and a Cocktail or two...yum! I highly recommend the lamb pitas and deviled eggs! Thank you for a culinary delight!

First and most important I want to say I have been to A&H numerous times and always left more than satisfied, for both brunch and dinner. I have eaten at Waypoint and enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to trying Longfellow Bar. I have always believed Chef Scelfo and his team do a Very Good job. Having said all that my Brunch experience on Sunday was a disappointing one overall. The 2 biggest issues would be when the server first came over to the table she very nicely explained that a number of the items on the menu were not available. She then began to name off what was at least 5 different menu items. A big enough portion of the menu to certainly take notice of. My second issue would be with what I ordered, the Sausage and Potato skillet. What I received was a skillet that was 85% fried potatoes, please don’t get me wrong I really like fried potatoes and these were good ones. The dish was subpar by anyone’s standards. The other thing I would mention is our server explained the menu issues were due to the opening of the new venture next door. As an almost 25 year veteran of the industry I have no doubt this contributed to all the issues at Brunch but I would question a place like A&H leaning to heavily on this excuse.

Two things I feel very confident in, I will be back and you will be better.
