In May 2009, Chef George Mendes opened Aldea in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood. Named after the Spanish word for village, the restaurant’s menu is inspired by the Iberian Peninsula and Mendes’ heritage. The chef adds a modern, seasonal approach to create a menu perfectly balanced between rusticity and refinement.

Beautiful and simplistic. The most outstanding feature of this restaurant was the staff. Everybody was so friendly and profesional that they make you feel right at home. Food was beyond delicious. Had to specially thank our server Marlon, who took the time and patience to explain to us the menu item by item. His recommendation did not disappoint either. Thank you so much for having us and will definitely stop by once again.
Really felt disappointed after this visit given the chef is a fellow portuguese countryman. The main thing that let this down was the service. We were seated upstairs which has a very ‘office’ feel to it. The staff seemed to be short numbered and very inexperienced. When courses arrived they were ‘thrown’ down on the table - at times in front of the wrong person! The explanation of what each dish was was inaudible and frankly the server couldn’t care less whether we knew what he was saying or not.
The food was good but not spectacular enough to outweigh the poor performance.
Another wonderful dinner at this fine restaurant. Chef Mendes was his usual very hospitable, engaging self. And the food and service was excellent. I especially recommend the scrumptious farm egg appetizer and the diver scallops entree and my wife loved the shrimp alhino appetizer and the suckling pig terrine entree. We can’t wait to return for another great meal. 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
came here because it was michelin star rated. the food was good but i've had equally good or better food elsewhere where there was no star. i had the sea urchin toast for first course - the toast is like a cracker but no longer crispy, the sea urchin on top was tasty. second course i had the charred octopus, which was not charred at all, more like boiled... main course i had the diver scallop with foie gras. the foie gras was devine but the rest was average. my husband had the egg custard, the spanish mackerel and steak, he loved them all.
Service was excellent, attentive and yet unobtrusive. Artful AND very tasty food. The room invites diners to get comfortable and let the meal unfold - we went with our adult children and all enjoyed the culinary adventure. Spending an evening together at Aldea felt like a mini vacation.
We were served water and then waited more than 15 min for the waiter. He walked up, took out his pad and said “what can I get you?” No welcome to Aldea, no hello my name is xxx.” He became friendlier later, but it was a poor first impression. We had a party of five. Two of us had gray meals, three of us had food, not great meals. We’d read good reviews, but were disappointed.
Always a pleasure to eat at Aldea. Today, Thanksgiving, the prix fixe menu carried an ample selection of different tastes, so one could carve out a program from classical Turkey to the more unusual. Splendid mushroom, bacon, poached egg and mushroom broth appetizer, splendidly refined salad with light touches of goat cheese, trout caviar, sliced radishes, cress and more, followed by a Portuguese duck rice, embellished with slices of duck breast and a more tasty rice concoction than one could ever find in Portugal, and a sea scallop dish with a little fois gras and fermented japanese turnips that perfectly cut the richness of the scallops and fois gras. Dessert a rice pudding from Portugal beautifully accented with fruits and a little liquer. Excellent wines by the glass, including the Niepoort Douro wines of Portugal (as well as their Port Wine). All served with skill and understatement in a quiet lunch-time environment. Congratulations to the Chef and staff, and thanks!
We had the pleasure of an 11 course tasting menu, prepared by George Mendes, and Laurent Gras. Every course was delicious; it's a good sign when we left debating which was our favorite. Gorgeous, gracefully prepared seafood comprised most of the meal, but a little kobe beef course was one of the highlights. The lobster cappuccino was totally loveable. And as a whole, the meal was balanced, light enough, but filling. What a fun experience. And compared to some of the crazily priced places around NYC, a reasonable value for a special event meal.
Very enjoyable evening. Ambiance, food (especially appetizers) and service were all excellent. The wine recommended by the sommelier was outstanding, We were four people and there wasn't one weak dish among us. We also have to single out the warm and gracious presentation of all the staff. We shall definitely return.
Another great meal as we continue our foodie tour of NYC. Portuguese food had all the right tastes. Loved the charred octopus. Another place to go if you want to get away from American fare. Also stayed with the Portuguese theme for the wine. Well worth asking about the wine and trying something new.
Generally good food and drinks but unacceptably poor service for a place this expensive. Our server didn't speak enough English to explain the food, we had to ask multiple times to get drinks, they got us the wrong cocktails, etc. Should not happen in a place of this caliber.
A hidden gem in the Village. Had nice complementary treats to get your palate prepared for Michelin starred Portuguese food. The Hokkaido uni toast was beautifully executed, piquant, and full of freshness. The octopus secondo was tender and juicy and paired perfectly with caramelized yellow peach slices. At last, the duck entree was absolutely stunning. Succulent and delectable.
NYC best experience! Totally recommended, food is amazing, best wine selection. About service I have a lot to say, living in ny makes me sometimes forget how important is good service and Aldea just reminded me what good service means. We will definitely come back ! Thanks to all the staff for make us have such a lovely experience.
Easily one of my top five dining experiences in New York, ever. Aldea's Michelin Star is very well deserved. The food was spectacular, the service was wonderful and the professionalism is palpable. I will certainly be back.
Reservation was made for quiet upper level. Staff was pleasant. Decor modern but warm.
Food and wines were good. Would go back with pleasure.
But.. food was served lukewarm which was lone disapointment, only food choice available was from "set price" short menu, the very long diversified menu seen on the Web was not available.
