Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Alara in Georgetown offers "awesome food" with a stylish Mediterranean vibe. The "outstanding service" by staff like Mia adds to the charm. While "delicious" dishes like lamb chops and baklava shine, noise levels can be high, and a 20% service charge is notable. "Highly recommended" for its vibrant atmosphere and "beautiful decor."

Did not appreciate the automatic 20% service charge that is not considered gratuity! Won’t be returning or referring friends!

Food was decent, tables were very very close to each other (less than 2 inches apart). Witnessed guests that were sat down in the same area as our table and immediately left once they saw how close tables were placed. A table adjacent to ours was placed right in front of the stairs so a customer could fall backwards if not aware of surroundings. The restaurant was extremely noisy, customers were competing amongst the music and other tables to talk over each other — it was distracting. It seems like the waiters also had difficulties maneuvering around tables to take orders and bring food which delayed service times. Would not recommend or come back.

Alara still has some kinks to work out. Overall, was loud, service was sporadic (slow (3 hours for 4 courses), failed to provide utensils, some drinks never arrived), food was reasonable but inconsistent, the "tasting" menu hadn't been thought through (portions were too big and with a party of 6 as we all individually ordered, sometimes we ended up with 6 of things when would have been better for restaurant to truly provide a "tasing" experience)

Georgetown is enjoying a welcome culinary renaissance — and Alara is among its brightest new stars. On a recent sun-drenched evening, we scored a coveted sidewalk table, the ideal perch for indulging in both flavor and people-watching. The scene was lively but never chaotic, and the service struck just the right note: gracious, informed, and unflustered, even when we asked to mix, match, and sample. The kitchen shows its finesse early with a Spicy Labneh Dip, rich and creamy with just the right thrum of heat from sun-dried chili and tomato. The accompanying pita arrives warm, pillowy, and clearly fresh from the oven — the kind of detail that earns repeat visits. When indecision struck at the entrée stage, our server gamely suggested a creative compromise: order the Moussaka, hearty and fragrant with cinnamon and tender eggplant, and add on a duo of lamb chops. It was a smart move. The chops, crusted and blushing pink inside, practically demanded a toast. Alara is the kind of place that invites lingering and rewards curiosity. I look forward to returning, fork in hand, to continue my exploration of the menu. Georgetown, it seems, just keeps getting better. 5 stars.

An attractive but extremely loud restaurant. The spreads and pita bread were fine; however, the whole fish and lamb chops (which were mothered by some eggplant sauce -- ugh) were overcooked and thus tasteless despite asking that the chops to be cooked medium rare. Service was fine. And then there was the "service" charge. We asked about the service charge as the invoice did not reflect it; simply had a line entry for "additional" tip. The waiter then produced the invoice which reflected a service charge of and additional $68. When discussing this charge we were told by the waiter that he would only receive 2% of the $68 and thus indicated his hope that we would provide an additional service fee so we left him $50. Very confusing and frankly misleading.
