Although open table list them as open Sunday night and the reservation was accepted in the system, . When we arrived after our 20 min drive in the rain the doors were closed and locked. We called asking if they were open and why our reservation was excepted when they are closed. We received a rude reply and no apology or even an acknowledgement that the open table reservation was wrong!
Good food great service. I always enjoy brunch here.
Perfect place for Sunday brunch with a colleague/friend. The crispy brussels sprouts were enough for 1 entree.
Nice service and wonderful Mediterranean food at this West Philadelphia just a short drive from the Penn Annenberg Center.
I always enjoy the food, service as well as ambiance the service is great! You are greeted by a welcoming host ! Overall one of the best gems in Philadelphia I would much rather dine here than many other more pricey restaurants! Aksum is just a warm feeling!
Food was amazing and server was wonderful ! We will be back
Great food very good
The menu choices were amazing. Appreciated the variety and versatility especially vegan and gluten free options. The staff was accommodating, chilling our bottles.
We had a reservation for a group dinner one evening when a large snowstorm hit Philadelphia. This restaurant stayed open for us and gave us excellent service. Great food. Exceptionally friendly staff.
I have dined here several times and enjoyed the food and ambience. This visit was not the same, they did not have the soup of the day, and the meal was marginal.
Excellent food very authentic. Attentive service. Casual dining.
Great server. Food excellent
Aksum is a byob and The food is always great and full of flavor.
This was our second visit to Aksum, and this time with good friends. We all enjoyed our meals, from beginning to end. The food is Mediterranean and well seasoned. As a BYOB in the Baltimore Avenue corridor, it is an undiscovered gem. They also serve brunch with vegan options. Well worth a visit.
recommend with reservations - food was flat. perhaps just an off night.
Service took a while for such a small place, and it was a bit tough to get a reservation for Sunday brunch. That said, the food was great (especially the crispy brussels sprouts!) and I love the bright colors and natural light. It's a nice atmosphere!
Delicious food. We loved the Arugula salad a and the shrimp dish. Big portions. Also great appetizers.
It's always great dining here! My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for years and I invited my high school friends to meet up for brunch here this past Sunday. We haven't met up in years so we ended up chatting past the restaurant's closing time to gear up for dinner!
The staff is always super friendly, down to earth and accommodating. This is my go-to brunch spot!
Love Aksum. Have been coming here for about 2 year and I love their menu and all the new dishes along the way. Def. on rod my favorite West Philly restaurants.
Food and service is consistently great as always. That the reason we always frequent Aksum for dining for a couple of years now. A true West Philadelphia gem.
Aksum is a favorite brunch destination of mine in West Philly. BYOB, affordable, and great food with creative specials. I recommend Aksum every time I’m planning a brunch with friends, and they are always impressed. Lots of vegetarian friendly options as well.
Aksum is usually my go to restaurant for brunch they have a good brunch menu, but the last time I came the waitress dropped my plate on me and was so nonchalant about it. I came here yesterday evening and had to wait twenty minutes total after asking our waitress two times to bring us a fork (it wasn't that busy) by the time she brought us one of course our food was cold. After we paid our bill and left our waitress comes running out yelling for us to come back inside because she gave us the wrong bill unbelievable!!! I was a little hesitant to return after the plate incident but decided to give them another try, but I'm sorry I won't be returning after this horrible service.
My first time at Aksum was great. Though I've lived in the area for a few years I had never been there, so I made a reservation for an anniversary dinner with my boyfriend on a Sunday evening. When we arrived, we noticed that it was pretty crowded (the restaurant is fairly small). However, we were seated after only a 2 minute wait by the sole host/server working that evening, Heather. We brought a bottle of wine (since it is BYOB) and Heather opened it right away for us and took our orders promptly after telling us the specials and recommending some of her favorite dishes. A large party of college students arrived shortly after we did, and there were two groups of 6 there as well, so we were expecting to wait a bit for our food. However, our starters came out very quickly, and the entrees followed soon after that. All of the food was delicious and presented beautifully and the service was excellent. (Thanks, Heather!) We will definitely be returning to Aksum.
I enjoyed the waffle with duck, bacon, a sunny side up egg and preserves. It was absolutely delicious!!!
We had a party of 6, birthday celebration! The service was GREAT!! This is a Great place for BYOB!!! Mussels was amazing!! The Spicy crab bisque was awesome!! Honey Salmon Entree and the Seabass Entree was very good!!! Lamb entree’s was very good as well!! There was no complaints!! And we topped it off with the Oreo Beignets!!! We will be back!!
We had a wonderful dinner on a bitterly cold night. All the staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Amongst us we had a range of salads and main courses--we all enjoyed everything we ordered but the beet salad, corn soup, and fattoush salad were all very fresh and nicely seasoned and of the main courses the lamb shank and vegetarian tagine were particularly good. Our wait person was very accommodating about one person's multiple food allergies. We'll be back.
My food was cold and so was my date's food.
My server was horrible she hardly came over to the table and when I told her the food was cold she nodded and walked away.
I've been here more than once and this is the second time my food has been cold with semi-warm coffe.
The food was delicious 😋
Service this time was mediocre.
The restaurant was freezing :/
I spoke to the owner/manager, she made a lot of excuses, she never once apologized and was dismissive.
Aksum is a favorite for dates and get-togethers with friends as well as co-workers in the area of the University of Pennsylvania. Near enough to have a lively mix of grad students and neighbors, but far enough not to be dominated by the usual clamor. The environment is aesthetically pleasing, and the arrangement of tables pleasing. Windows open during summertime, with outdoor tables. The food is really excellent, always flavorful, perfectly seasoned and cooked, interesting and comforting. The service by wait person Jamila is exceptional, classy, smooth, seemless, anticipating our questions before we even think to ask. It's a real treat. Location on Baltimore makes it a bit out of the way, well worth it. A hidden gem. Recently, on a Wednesday night, it was quiet at 6pm, but got quite full by 8pm.
The BEST French Toast on earth #idodeclare. If I don't know anything else, I know good French Toast. In all of my travels around the world (I used to live in Abu Dhabi), I can only recommend three places for great French Toast. Aksum is definitely one 😍😍😍... And I don't have to fly half-way around the world to get it 🙌
I’ve been to this restaurant on a few occasions and always had a fine experience. On this occasion, although I made reservations far in advance , I had a horrible table in a corner with no view and they dropped the item I was going to have as my entree .
It was also my wife’s birthday. The waitress had to be new because she was unsure if the dropped item was still available even though it was off the menu.
Next time I’ll do the brunch.
My first time there, will not be my last. I don't like my food piled top of each other (vegetables ,mashed potatoes then the chicken). The chicken was good, but could have been a little more tender.
Fantastic place, food was great for omnivores and vegans alike.
Our Sunday afternoon brunch was very crowded and so noisy that we sometimes had difficulty hearing one another!
Amazing as always!
Great food, service & ambiance.
It was freezing in the restaurant.
Food was great! I had a great time! I also had great Lemon Lavender Tea.
the brussel sprouts were amazing, highly recommend
The food here is hands down phenomenal. The dishes are a perfect blend of creative and comforting. The ingredients are always fresh, I have loved everything I have tried. They menu included gluten free/vegan/vegetarian options, and they are accommodating of changes due to dietary needs. The service, though not perfect, is always friendly and welcoming. This place is a neighborhood favorite of mine and will continue to be, hopefully for years to come.
For some reason it just took a really long time for our entrees to show up. The server was very apologetic and gave us a dessert but it was just strange. I’ve eaten here before and haven’t had that happen. It was disappointing because we were bringing a friend back to her old neighborhood to try the place and wanted her to like it. Will be back and hopefully this won’t happen again.
