Aksum Ratings and Reviews
We had a wonderful dinner on a bitterly cold night. All the staff were friendly, helpful, and welcoming. Amongst us we had a range of salads and main courses--we all enjoyed everything we ordered but the beet salad, corn soup, and fattoush salad were all very fresh and nicely seasoned and of the main courses the lamb shank and vegetarian tagine were particularly good. Our wait person was very accommodating about one person's multiple food allergies. We'll be back.
My food was cold and so was my date's food.
My server was horrible she hardly came over to the table and when I told her the food was cold she nodded and walked away.
I've been here more than once and this is the second time my food has been cold with semi-warm coffe.
Aksum is a favorite for dates and get-togethers with friends as well as co-workers in the area of the University of Pennsylvania. Near enough to have a lively mix of grad students and neighbors, but far enough not to be dominated by the usual clamor. The environment is aesthetically pleasing, and the arrangement of tables pleasing. Windows open during summertime, with outdoor tables. The food is really excellent, always flavorful, perfectly seasoned and cooked, interesting and comforting. The service by wait person Jamila is exceptional, classy, smooth, seemless, anticipating our questions before we even think to ask. It's a real treat. Location on Baltimore makes it a bit out of the way, well worth it. A hidden gem. Recently, on a Wednesday night, it was quiet at 6pm, but got quite full by 8pm.
The BEST French Toast on earth #idodeclare. If I don't know anything else, I know good French Toast. In all of my travels around the world (I used to live in Abu Dhabi), I can only recommend three places for great French Toast. Aksum is definitely one 😍😍😍... And I don't have to fly half-way around the world to get it 🙌
I’ve been to this restaurant on a few occasions and always had a fine experience. On this occasion, although I made reservations far in advance , I had a horrible table in a corner with no view and they dropped the item I was going to have as my entree .
It was also my wife’s birthday. The waitress had to be new because she was unsure if the dropped item was still available even though it was off the menu.
Next time I’ll do the brunch.
The food here is hands down phenomenal. The dishes are a perfect blend of creative and comforting. The ingredients are always fresh, I have loved everything I have tried. They menu included gluten free/vegan/vegetarian options, and they are accommodating of changes due to dietary needs. The service, though not perfect, is always friendly and welcoming. This place is a neighborhood favorite of mine and will continue to be, hopefully for years to come.
For some reason it just took a really long time for our entrees to show up. The server was very apologetic and gave us a dessert but it was just strange. I’ve eaten here before and haven’t had that happen. It was disappointing because we were bringing a friend back to her old neighborhood to try the place and wanted her to like it. Will be back and hopefully this won’t happen again.
Our first visit and it was great. Nice menu selections and portions. Very tasty. We drove in from Ambler area and were delighted to find on street parking just steps away. We were not rushed and enjoyed a lovely night with friends. The music was a bit loud at first but them it was turned down.
Excellent Service from the moment I made the reservations through the end of our dinner. I had picky family members in attendance and they loved the food and ambience. Our waitress Monet was second to none. Elizabeth who I made reservations with was professional and kind. My Mother-in-law was very grateful for such a wonderful experience as we celebrated her 77th Birthday!!! Thanks Askum Staff :-)
Dinner was excellent. While we had a server who was in training that slowed things down a little, overall the service was attentive. Fig and apple salad had a beautiful presentation and nice, light dressing. Salmon was seared to perfection and spicy mashed potatoes had a nice kick. Didn't try the desserts, but from what I saw, they looked amazing!
We have eaten here on several occasions. This time was disappointing. We ordered the same entrees as from our prior visits. We knew right away looking at our entrees and upon tasting there was a new chef. The mussels were old. One of our entrees was cold. The server was awesome and did bring a replacement entree. However, my chicken and shrimp entree was excellent.
