A. Kitchen is a unique restaurant. The serving staff is highly trained and there is great thought and effort put into a unique and eclectic wine list. I had a beautiful red from the Canary Islands. It was my first venture there and it was delicious.
It was restaurant week, which is $35 for two appetizers, one main and one dessert. A great value.
There was a squash dish that was out of this world. I had the chicken for dinner and it was perfectly prepared. My Wife had the burger, which I must admit is not one of the top burgers in Philly. They really need to address that. Other than that, top shelf.

My first dining experience at a.kitchen was during Philly Restaurant Week. What an intro to a phenomenal restaurant! Every aspect of the meal was excellent- I made a reservation to go back the following weekend!

So, how does one find fault with great food, excellent wine, and great service?
It has to be the overall value or cost/experience ratio and this was the only failing.
We went with 2 other people, having one cocktail each - pricey at $14 on average - a one bottle of wine - in the $60's, plus we shared I think 6 small plates, and with tip it came to a bit over $65 person.
Is that too much, too little, just right? I had the feeling that we have had equally great experiences for less in the City, but other than the cost, I can say only positve things about the meal.

The food was creative, beautifully presented, and delicious. The room sets up nicely. Although the space is intimate, we never felt crowded. However, the price was pretty steep.

Waiter was nice and tried but inexperienced. Food was mediocre at best. Hamachi was 3 small flavorless pieces. The crab and pumpkin croquettes were good but no pumpkin flavor at all. The oysters were just oysters. The gnocchi were excellent. Best of the dishes. Brussels sprouts were good. My companions like the burger as did I but it was a bit salty and I wasn’t fond of the horseradish sauce. Very loud and difficult to hear especially when they turned the music up. The drinks were watered down and when I ordered a scotch neat it was a very weak pour. (Worse than an airport bar pour). Disappointing overall

My girlfriend and I went for the cellar raid held on the first Wednesday of every month. All regular sized bottles are 50% off. It's a great way to promote a.kitchen's eclectic wine program. Joey, the sommelier, suggest I try a Cab Franc that he found to have great value and was interesting to those who normally enjoy a good Loire valley Cab Franc. After tasting, I thought that it had been corked. Joey indicated that it was probably the profile, but none the less had the foresight to help me choose another wine that was more to my liking. It was such a thoughtful thing to do. He told me that it was more important that I enjoyed my choice than if that's how the wine was supposed to taste. I thought it was quite admirable to think that way. Kudos to you, Joey. If you're ever at a.kitchen and would like some honest advice on how to pair a nice bottle of wine with your meal, look no further. From start to finish, it was a great meal. The food is interesting, the service is unintrusive, yet prompt and the atmosphere is simple and romantic. A.kitchen is consistently a great choice. Thanks for the great meal, as always.

I went to this place on a rain/sleet Monday night and could not have been more disappointed. The place was not busy, the service was so -so and the food was not much better. We tried to order 2 small plates and 1 entrée and were told that would not be enough food. We ordered a chicken dish which I didn't think was up to temperature and would have sent it back if there was someone there to receive it. I found this place to be overrated and would not go back.

I have been to A.Kitchen 3 times the first 2 being superb this one being less satisfying based on the high bar they had set. Chef's were not engaging at the counter, dishes were less than warm on occasion, the vegetable lasagna was cold and under sauced. The rest of the meal was better than most . The wine pairings were right on the money

Solo diners may get shuffled to counter seating during peak times. Bad: having your back to entrance/activity (for most counter seats), odd placement (next to mirror column), you miss out on overall ambiance. Good: you get to watch the kitchen action!

The service for our lunch was just not good. Too long to take orders, drink orders unfulfilled until after appetizers were brought, unnoticed medium sized spill on table when filling water, spill on the floor near bathroom was not cleaned up for too long. The food was good other than one of our party’s medium order hamburger was RARE and the chicken on the sandwich was too small for the bun. It was likely an off day, but disappointing.

a. Kitchen has a very nice lunch, room is small and noisy as an FYI, but I did ok with my hearing loss & aids. The Babette steak and green lentils were delicious, one tiny addition that would make it excellent, would be a slice of bread. Nice local craft beer selection and 1st courses of tuna crude and crab/pumpkin croquettes were very nice.

The food was outstanding. Everything we ordered was prepared to perfection. Not only was it presented in a pleasing manner, but the taste was exquisite. While the food was great, the highlight of our experience was our server, Boxer. He was knowledgeable about the food and drinks, he was extremely helpful and friendly, and his service was impeccable. The fifth star that I gave in each of the categories above, belong to Boxer.

We attend the Glorious Sounds of Christmas every year at the Kimmel so we look for a special pre concert dinner night out. A.kitchen exceeded its wonderful reviews and my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is small, handsome, lively space in Rittenhouse , with attentive, informative service and absolutely exquisite cooking. We started with oysters (that have a delightful back story). I had the octopus small plate which was poached then grilled making it worthy of the best Ive had--including around the Mediterranean. It is not the easiest dish to keep from being tough and they succeeded in spades. My wife had the soupe de poisson and I had the grilled fish which that night was swordfish. The soupe was outstanding-a memorable dish with an absolutely delicious broth, a beautifully cooked piece of black bass and shellfish. The swordfish was very good but its supporting cast was particularly outstanding. I am not a dessert fanatic but I tried the honey custard, with honeycomb and bee pollen and it was stellar. Overall a.kitchen is a 10. We will absolutely return.

I go out to restaurants often but have only felt the need to write a negative review on one other occasion. I was greatly looking forward to our dinner at a.kitchen after reading Craig LaBan's recent review of its fall menu and, consequently, recommended going there for a friends holiday get-together. The main server was very pleasant but, from the time we ordered, we felt like they couldn't wait to turn our table over. Our appetizers appeared in no time and before we knew it, the entrees were delivered while 2 of the 3 of us were only halfway through their salads. The servers were pushing dishes out of the way to try to make room for all of the plates. My duck arrived cool. Perhaps it was meant to be served that way...I'm not sure. Also, although I had inquired about the sauce that came with the duck, I was told that none was needed because of the way it was prepared. To my surprise, the duck and accompaniments were sitting on a pool of sauce. When our main server came to check on how everything was, I mentioned my uset at the rushed service and she apologized, saying that it was her fault. I failed to mention about the duck, as I don't generally like to complain and it was actually tasty. No sooner were we finished the main course than spoons were set in front of us and we were told that we were receiving a complimentary chocolate dessert because of our being rushed. It was a very nice offer but it would have been nice to be asked if we actually liked chocolate or were able to eat it. Finally, as the chocolate cake (very delicious) was set on the table, so was our bill. It was unfortunate that what was supposed to be a relaxed night out with friends to celebrate the holidays turned out to be so unpleasant. Although we enjoyed the food, I would be hesitant to return or recommend the restaurant to others.

Went there on a week night excited to sample the refurbished menu. Tasted 5 different dishes (we were three) and, unfortunately, the best anyone could say about any of them was ‘it’s ok’. Very disappointing given the ambition (octopus, harissa, fish soup among others). It was worse than bad - it was mediocre. Shame - this was an exciting restaurant a few years ago. No longer.
