I go out to restaurants often but have only felt the need to write a negative review on one other occasion. I was greatly looking forward to our dinner at a.kitchen after reading Craig LaBan's recent review of its fall menu and, consequently, recommended going there for a friends holiday get-together. The main server was very pleasant but, from the time we ordered, we felt like they couldn't wait to turn our table over. Our appetizers appeared in no time and before we knew it, the entrees were delivered while 2 of the 3 of us were only halfway through their salads. The servers were pushing dishes out of the way to try to make room for all of the plates. My duck arrived cool. Perhaps it was meant to be served that way...I'm not sure. Also, although I had inquired about the sauce that came with the duck, I was told that none was needed because of the way it was prepared. To my surprise, the duck and accompaniments were sitting on a pool of sauce. When our main server came to check on how everything was, I mentioned my uset at the rushed service and she apologized, saying that it was her fault. I failed to mention about the duck, as I don't generally like to complain and it was actually tasty. No sooner were we finished the main course than spoons were set in front of us and we were told that we were receiving a complimentary chocolate dessert because of our being rushed. It was a very nice offer but it would have been nice to be asked if we actually liked chocolate or were able to eat it. Finally, as the chocolate cake (very delicious) was set on the table, so was our bill. It was unfortunate that what was supposed to be a relaxed night out with friends to celebrate the holidays turned out to be so unpleasant. Although we enjoyed the food, I would be hesitant to return or recommend the restaurant to others.

A delightful meal! The service was polite and professional. The food was excellent. My wife, who is normally not very enthusiastic about restaurants asked when we could return.

Truly one of the best meals I have had in Philly. The service was spot on. The wine list, although not extensive was perfect.

Have had a half-dozen meals at a. Kitchen recently. Grilled fish, smoked duck breast and roast chicken were all great, but the choucroute garni was the standout! Salads and squash starter were terrific. drinks and wine list all excellent. service professional and friendly.

Went there on a week night excited to sample the refurbished menu. Tasted 5 different dishes (we were three) and, unfortunately, the best anyone could say about any of them was ‘it’s ok’. Very disappointing given the ambition (octopus, harissa, fish soup among others). It was worse than bad - it was mediocre. Shame - this was an exciting restaurant a few years ago. No longer.

New chef. New menu. Everything we tried was outstanding as were the wine by the glass selections with generous pours. Yay Ellen!

The garlic bread and lettuce salad were delicious— fresh and creative. The duck was tasty and well-presented just not quite warm enough. I had two glasses of white wine which were generous but not quite chilled enough. We sat at the counter and enjoyed watching the team work. Good service, friendly without being intrusive.

We decided to try to it again after reading LaBan's recent, glowing review. We thought the food was good but we did not quite have LaBan's experience. My steak was salty and the server poured prosecco into the wine glasses at the table rather than retrieving flutes (which was a first!!).

This place has been consistently good over several visits. Lunch menu is small but has very good--to excellent--options. I do not believe I have had anything in the menu that was anything less than very good. Some are excellent. I use it all the time for meeting colleagues or friends for lunch. Breakfast is also excellent. And, the bread is outstanding!

Having heard awesome things about the food (and a.bar next door) I was really excited to try this place for brunch. But when I arrived, the hostess indicated that all tables were full and there would be a wait. She didn't really explain how long the wait would be (I don't think she knew?) and I was a little put off, since I had a reservation. Eventually, another staff member came over to explain that my table would be ready in a few minutes. I appreciated that - but she definitely seemed annoyed/irritated... as though my wondering what happened to my reservation was unreasonable.

Anywho - the food was EXCELLENT. That part did not disappoint. But my date and I did notice it took a long time for a cup of coffee to come out, and our server never asked us how we were doing, or if we wanted anything else. Our meal just kind of ended when she dropped the check on the table and walked away. So all in all, I'm glad I tried it... but I don't know that I'll go back.

Amazing meal--very interesting appetizers and a terrific soupe de poisson. Fantastic service--server offered us the opportunity to taste three different whites before we chose just a glass of each! Timing was exactly right. I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

My husband and I were visiting the city and meeting up with a few our Philly friends for dinner. The food and service weren't that great but we still had fun. Our waitress was kind but she seemed new on the job and we felt a little rushed. The dishes were flavorful but the flavors didn't blend well and some dishes were just odd. We enjoyed the chickpea dish but all the others were just so-so.

There are numerous better options in Philadelphia. This is really just an upscale diner located near Rittenhouse Square, it is not really a fine (or good) dining establishment. Like a diner, the offerings are ‘comfort food’.....nothing too imaginative, nothing really great....just comfortable.

I have been here on several occasions and it is one of my favorite places. The food is outstanding and the team is welcoming, helpful and unpretentious. Everything we ate was terrific, especially the oysters and fried calamari with a lemon pepper jam which were exceptional. The bartender makes a great martini and the wine selections are excellent.

Went with a group of friends (some old, some new) for Saturday brunch. Table of 6. Service was EXCELLENT. We enjoyed everyone we interacted with - very attentive. Food was good, but not over the top memorable. Great dishes, but don't go too hungry. Would recommend, go again.

On my own in town, and though tables fully booked on a busy saturday night, no problem getting a counter place. Good buzzy atmosphere on the corner of Rittenhouse square
Great, inventive food - lovely complimentary amuse-bouche, delicious oysters, creative entree of Panisse with harissa chick-peas, and a truly wonderful fish soup - a fragrant eastern variant on bouillabaisse.
Only downsides: seems VERY expensive ($100 inc two glasses of wine) - I'm from London which is one of the most expensive cities and would not have expected to pay as much there. Service could have been more attentive: e.g. I had to ask for a spoon for my soup, and they eventually bought a teaspoon!
I'd definitely go back though, for the quality of cooking and the buzz
