About Akiko's Restaurant & Sushi Bar
The quality of our sushi is attributed to a one-of-a-kind combination of fresh ingredients, coupled with
26 years of experience and unique preparation techniques. "Akiko" means “autumn child; iris, bright
and light” in Japanese. When entering our space guests will see rustic-earth tones, imported rosewood
floors, exposed brick walls, and varied place settings on unique oak tables. The atmosphere ensures
that our customers get a unique dining experience. Our charming, boutique restaurant is conveniently
located in the Financial District in downtown San Francisco. We provide the Japanese staple in the area,
serving modern, yet traditional Japanese fare.

Akiko's Restaurant & Sushi Bar Ratings and Reviews
Over-rated for the price to quality ratio. The sashimi was fine but average compared to the competition in the area. One advantage is they take reservations. Poor ambiance at this temporary location. Felt like a cheap cafe. Staff was ok. Not very friendly though. How about a smile next time?
After trying to walk in without a reservation, I made a reservation a month in advance for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. The sushi chef was very friendly and knowledgeable. We sat at the bar and had the best experience being able to watch the chefs create these amazing sushi and sashimi pieces. The fish is flown in from Japan and you can really taste the freshness! Great food worth the price. I would recommend having a few drinks before as the wine is expensive.
Had a wonderful experience at Akiko's as a surprise for my partners birthday. I was worried because our reservation was 15 minutes before it closed to prep for dinner and was happily surprised to find they didn't rush us at all. Food was exceptional and service was great!
We read the recommendation on trip advisor. The restaurant was located 200 meters from our hotel so that was very convenient. We have been in many good sushi restaurants in. Any cities and this was good but not the best. Seems expensive (400+ such per 2 persons). We ordered the omakase and there was some very good items but was not consistent overall), the service was below average so at the end there was a not good relation price/quality
Avoid at all costs. Menu on their website is not updated to reflect new prices/selection, slow seating, poor service, sold out of many items. Pick almost any other sushi restaurant in SF because this one is a complete dud.
Always popping up on best sushi lists, Akiko was on my personal must try list. It didn’t disappoint. The cool raw space, attentive service and just incredible sashimi. Also enjoyed the greens salad, miso soup and chef’s recommendation for seares butterfish and cold sake selection. The neiman ranch gyu came with housemate kimchi, padron peppers and fried Brussels sprouts.
Akiko's serves exceptionally good sushi. The service is pretty good, but could not be described as friendly.
The main dining area appears to have been an alley between two buildings at one time or another. It's dim, tunnel-like, and extremely noisy when busy. It doesn't help that the restaurant also plays moderately loud music over the sound system.
There are a few seats at the sushi bar and a three tables near the entrance that have windows to the street. These tables are in high demand.
Despite the high quality food, I may have to give up on Akiko's because of the substandard dining room.
Amazing! Flavors were just amazing. It was our first time at Akiko’s and we opted for the omakase tasting menu. Most of the dishes were good. Some were absolutely amazing. Very unique and thoughtful. It was refreshing to be the recipient of a well thought out menu.
The sushi was interesting and fresh but the pieces were tiny and very expensive. That, however, is not my main problem with this restaurant. They billed me an extra, unapproved $33 on my credit card and just kept promising to call me back when I called to have it corrected. I'm still waiting! Mistakes happen but they are apparently not interested in correcting them. I was also a little put off by the fact that I went with a friend on my birthday AND hers (we have the same birthday) and the restaurant did ZERO to acknowledge the birthdays...no dessert, no candle, not even a Happy Birthday greeting, even though I put a note on my reservation saying it was our birthdays.
My advice - for a special occasion, pick a restaurant that cares. And make sure to monitor your credit card and keep all receipts if you do go!
The value was not there especially for the quality of the fish and the ambiance. We were seated directly in front of the door, so overtime a person opened the door we experienced a cold draft. I'd much prefer eat at Kusakabe for the price of the sashimi/nigiri here.
Recommend making a reservation for earlier in the night if possible. I could only get a 9pm reservation and had to wait an additional 30 minutes for a table. I also recommend asking to sit at the sushi bar. While waiting I saw the sushi chefs serving a different menu to the patrons of the bar. When I requested information about some of the sushi choices from the bar, the waiter was completely confused and dismissive. We were sat at a table in the main dining room with zero privacy and constant traffic to and from the bathroom. The sushi was fresh and delicious and I will return but will make sure to only sit at the bar.
Akiko's is a whole other level of sushi. In the past I've been to places which I felt were good, but they're in a different category. I always thought it people were exaggerating when they would talk about melt in your mouth, tender sushi. Now I know they are not. I got the nigiri sampler plus a couple of other items and everything was so fresh and full of flavor.
When I first wrote this review I gave only 4 stars for value. I came back and changed that to 5 stars as I realized that while the food was pricey it was so worth it.
I will definitely visit again.
