Japanese
The quality of our sushi is attributed to a one-of-a-kind combination of fresh ingredients, coupled with 26 years of experience and unique preparation techniques. "Akiko" means “autumn child; iris, bright and light” in Japanese. When entering our space guests will see rustic-earth tones, imported rosewood floors, exposed brick walls, and varied place settings on unique oak tables. The atmosphere ensures that our customers get a unique dining experience. Our charming, boutique restaurant is conveniently located in the Financial District in downtown San Francisco. We provide the Japanese staple in the area, serving modern, yet traditional Japanese fare.

Good food but service was honestly too much. Cleared the plates before we were done. The tables were so close to each other that we had a hard time having a conversation above the people next to us. Food was good but overpriced. Everything felt like such a big fuss. Why is it so difficult to get good Japanese food without all the pretentiousness in SF?

Absolutely I would recommend this restaurant. Fabulous food. So fresh. So innovative. And a lovely ambiance. Great sake. I wish I lived closer I would definitely do there again when I can. The house roll was excellent and one of the specials of the day was salmon with truffles. Excellent!

The best rolls and sashimi I've ever had -- and I've had very good sushi before! Akiko's takes you to an entirely different level and it's all exceptional. The staff is helpful, warm and always smiling. You feel welcomed the very moment you walk into Akiko's. And when it comes time to leave, you will only want to come right back. Request a table up front or at the bar for the best experience. And definitely make a reservation! The restaurant was packed on Monday night at 7 PM and many folks without reservations had to be turned away. If you are in San Francisco and you want to enjoy a superb sushi experience, Akiko's is the best place to go.

I have been coming to Akiko’s since 1998. I always order sashimi and it is the best I have ever had, in the US. This time I introduced my children to sushi. But they eat nigiri and I was unaware that the sushi chef put a dash of Wasabi under the fish. My kids were surprised by this and it made for a difficult evening trying to get them to trust me when ordering. I was unaware that this was the practice because the fish is the best.

They liked the sushi. I still love the place.

It was such a pleasant experience sitting at the bar, talking with our sushi chef and the plater, preparing the dishes coming out of the kitchen. The fish is so super fresh and top-quality - it simply melts in your mouth. I've eaten a lot of sushi and this is easily one of the best...

Amazing fish, very cool dishes, service extremely attentive, overall a great experience. The only thing I would say is that it is expensive, but then again they're getting the fish directly from Japan. Definitely worth a try.

We ordered Omakase or chef's choice and it was amazing. We asked for no sea urchin and that request was honored. Delicious sushi in beautiful arrangements. Very pleased with our 2nd time there.

Very discrete resto that has been shared from a foodie friend. If you are 2 dinning, definitely eat at the sushi bar, as the experice is more fun than at a regular table, you will get your sushi freshly done and ready to eat right in front of you. Also, experience a nice bottle of Sake to embrace the full experience. The staff is very knowledgeable, they will recommend the best related to your taste.

For a restaurant trying to position itself as a high end sushi restaurant, this place fails with the most basic aspect. We sat at the counter and had omakase; unfortunately the food was inconsistent at best. Many warm dishes coming out lukewarm; the shari (the rice) of sushi temperature was inconsistent from cold to properly warm. At a restaurant like this at this price point, expecting consistency shouldn’t be an unreasonable request

Service was very good as the waitress made detailed explanations of the menu, which changed daily for the daily specials. The sashimi was fantastic - a real delicacy of halibut, king salmon, two types of tuna and sea bream.

Poor execution on the sushi rolls. Missing ingredients, unbalanced distribution, rolls were not tight. Also, not much variety in rolls on the menu; they all had about the same ingredients them.

For all they hype I expected this to be my new go-to. Nope.

Expected much higher quality food and ambience for the kind of price they were charging. Had the $150 per pax Omakase for 16 dishes. 8 cooked small bites and 8 nigiri. Small bites were pretty disappointing while the nigiri was nothing to shout about (vinegar in the rice was overpowering). Service felt extremely rushed and everything was served non-stop (nigiris were 3 at one go rather than piece by piece) - unsure if this was because we weren't seated at the counter. Felt like we were being ushered out too quickly without proper time to enjoy the dining expetience.

I have been to the restaurant before but this time was so disappointing, the cod been over cooked and marinated. I ordered Salmon roll and 2 pieces only has avocado no salmon inside at all. Nigiri over salted couldn’t taste the fish at all.
