Agozar Cuban Restaurant - Permanently Closed Ratings and Reviews
the food came so quickly that we found ourselves ordering more so that we could stay! (literally we'd finished 30min after sitting... and we were hoping for a longer, more leisurely meal that that). But, we then ordered the seafood paella and it was amazing. great choice. They don't seem to have a ton of cuban food, which is weird, but the paealla was delicious and the place was fun. I hear they have unlimited sangria brunch, which i would certainly patronize. Guacamole was the smallest portion i've ever seen. Why are restaurants so stingy with their guacamole?!
We had reservations and it still took close to an hour to seat us. After we got a table it took about 20 minutes for service. The sangria, the drink they seem to pride themselves on, while tasty, it is not authentic. It was more of a sweet punch. At $40 a pitcher, it would be nice to get the real deal. The food was ok. I would recommend the vaca frita if you are having an entree. However, for a place that puts itself out as cuban cuisine, the rice and beans are certainly not quality. Nailing the rice and beans as a cuban restaurant is a must. The buñuelo desert was good. Overall, I would not recommend agozar. If you like cuban cuisine, look elsewhere. Cuba on thompson street beats this place by a mile.
Third time visiting, absolutely fantastic and happy to be there. Brought 3 friends enjoyed early bird dinners, big portion, good meal. We are very happy, the server was so friendly, easy going and no-attitude can do. I gave him a good tip and looking forward for next time happy hour.
Our waiter was most helpful as we had never tried Cuban food. The barbarque shrimp appetizer was excellent with just the right of amount of heat so that you tasted the shrimp.
The sangria was the best I have ever had and it came with the meal. We had the Tres Leches Cake for desert and it was wonderful with homemade whipped cream. The Cuban sandwich was very good as was the pork. Will be going again.
It was a lively place. I'm not a drinker but the drinks must have been good 'coz it was loud. The place IS small, sitting arrangement was too clutter. This place was filled with about 4 groups, I went with my husband only. I picked the wrong place for this only for two dinner. Only if I've known. I would go again if its with a group not just two.
The food was actually good but the waiting period was simply unacceptable. More than 30 minutes to get your appetizers, another 30 for main course, 10 or desert and 1 second for the bill. Wine list was poor and the noise, well I guess this is becoming a hot spot for noisy people who after the first sip of mojito become more noisy than ever.
I purchase a $25 coupon to be used when paid and it was not honored because we did not choose from the menu but from the fixed menu. I do not know if this could be returned, hope so, because I dont intend to return here, could you please let me know that. Thank you
The place is very loud - between the music and the Christening party (yes, they are very family-kid-friendly) sitting in our section - we got annoyed, but it was late to change seats - the bar also had a private party, so we were "trapped" there. Except for the time that took for them to start bringing our appetizers (45 minutes), we got really happy with the tasty food they served us. The best Cuban food I've ever ate!
We wold go back for the food and the Mojitos (also excellent). Too bad it's not quieter, doesn't feel like a restaurant, but a bar.
The food was acceptable, both in taste and price. I've had much better Cuban food, but it was pretty on point. Our waiter seemed to forget that our table existed, but at least that didn't happen until after we got all of our dishes. Our drinks were also replenished with frequency, but it took about half an hour just to pay the bill!
We were very excited to taste our little dishes and entrees. The pork and paella were especially succulent, and we loved the mushroom quesadillas. Don't bother with the plantains. They were cold and not very tasty. The salad was excellent and large enough to share. We needed to change our table and the staff were very helpful. In all, it was a surprise and very good experience. Who would have thought of the Bowery as a place to enjoy?
Chose Agozar as a venue to gather the family and celebrate my husbands bdays. When I made the reservation I did not realize it was 5 de Mayo. The restaurant was very accommodating to our large group and children. Food was gret and drinks were always coming. Had a great time and so did the bday boy.
The server and host were very nice and accommodating. I would definitely go back. It was a bit noisy inside, so we ended up eating outside which is always my preference anyway. The food was yummy and I had plenty to bring home! VERY affordable wine also with options for only $18 a bottle! Also, by making the reservation through "find a table" on the website and using the "Mad Cuban" promotion we got 50% off the bill! 1 app, 2 entrees and a bottle of wine for only around $42!! I would definitely recommend Agozar.
I was really looking forward to this place, except it fell short of my expectations (and being from Miami, I had a high standard). While, it looked and felt like I was in Latin America or South Florida, the food wasn't very good. We had one of the calamari dishes and it wasn't cooked properly. Also, even with their small plates menu, I found that it was exceptionally expensive for not only the quality of the food, but the quantity. The best thing about this venue is their plantain chips/dip and their drinks. Caipirinha was to die for! We got a pitcher, it was really great! However, all that being said, to Agozar's credit, their staff is impeccable. They are friendly, helpful and great people to be around.
was at the bar for happy hour and still able to catch the prixfixe for $16.50 beofre 8pm - Incredible meal - shrimp ceviche , ribs, Quesadilla shrimp and chorizo, fresh avocado, and oaxaca cheese, Pollo Moqueca chicken breast strips wsautéed with red peppers in a creamy coconut and tomatoe sauce, served with yellow rice and for deserts Torta de Naranja
valencia orange cake with whipped cream and a warm mango tart with vanilla ice cream
happy hour 5-7 @ the bar - Mariquitas - plantain chips, house guacamole/black bean hummus and order a side of quac and enjoy - i liked the Camarones al Ajillo - shrimp, double garlic sauce better than Alambre - grilled shrimp, mole poblano, and the Quesadilla de Hongo - mushroom quesadilla, fire roasted pepper sauce had the right amount of spice stay away from the crispy calamari with Dominican honey, the calamari is tough and the sauce toooo sweet i really enjoyed the passion drink that i substituted strawberries for the passion fruit
We went there for their "all you can drink sangria" for two hours deal. They asked us to leave after an hour and a half. It was a later brunch time but if they told us before that we would not have been able to stay we may have chosen a different place. Also, there was a very rowdy group sitting near us which is to be expected during an "all you can drink sangria" deal but one person had an ear piercing scream. In fact I think she was purposely getting louder. The staff did not do one thing to quiet her down. I would go back again but I would ask to sit in the front near the bar so that there would be less chance of having an annoying table neighbor.
Very noisy. The food was good, though, but they were mysteriously out of plantain chips, which had drawn us to the restaurant in the first place. There were lots of very very noisy groups around us, and we were a group of NY twenty somethings so it's not like we're super judgmental about a little noise. Good food otherwise though; I'd go back, maybe for lunch.
We went for ladies night. 1/2 priced appetizers and 1/2 priced Sangria. What OPentable doesn't note I guess, is that you must sit in the lounge in order to do the special. We were sat in the dining room and then had to wait to speak to a manager, who finally told us this one time was ok. Service was SLOW and they only came back once to ask us if we wanted more drinks. The ambience in the dning room is also very much inferior to that of the lounge. Not a bad place for the 1/2 priced deals, but would not pay full price for the food.
Went to Agozar to celebrate my son's girlfriend's legal publication about Guantanamo detentions and jokingly mentioned Cuban. The dining room is very cramped & chairs are uncomfortable. We ordered a number of tapas: mushroom croquettes-deliciosa!, flautas crisp, very tasty;empanaditas -3 types, very tasty esp fruity sauce;garlic shrimp -sauce very good, lots of shrimp; meatballs were ok,great sauce; mushroom quesadilla -excellent; bean dumplings, excellent!Congri & yellow rice were very good. 2 entrees:paella marinera:OK, rice was dry; ropa de vega, tasty. Sangria was fruity & heady. Mojitos were excellent, full of mint & not to be missed. All together a fun night. Great Service.
