AGORA Ratings and Reviews
This is a tapas restaurant. My husband hated tapas because the portions are always so small and he always leaves hungry, but I really wanted to try this place. So we went, we ordered about 6 plates (what we normally order at a tapas place) and it was definitely too much food. Lol these portions are definitely larger than a location like Jaleo. The food was fantastic though. The only think we tried that I didn't like was the lamb sausage. It was oddly sweet. The octopus was perfectly cooked and a must try, as is the beet salad.
Outstanding! Our group of three people shared five dishes plus two desserts. They ranged from very good to extraordinary. The baba ganoush was the best I’ve ever had outside Turkey; the eggplant clearly had been fire roasted, giving the dish the proper smoky taste. I don’t know what made the suckling lamb ribs so good , but they were tender and delicious. The seasoned olive oil for the bread was so good that we polished it off. By the time it came for dessert, we chose two items that I usually avoid because they tend to be icky sweet. However, our meal had been so outstandingly good that we decided to order baklava and the honey doughnuts. We were rewarded with two great desserts—sweet but not icky. The room was a little noisy but not too bad. Service was attentive. We were all really glad we came.
AGORA proved to be an excellent choice. The food was very good with an excellent selection of choices. As a vegetarian I had plenty of options, and meat eaters have lots to choose from. Portion sizes were appropriate and sensible (i.e. not stupid super-sized American) allowing one to try numerous dishes. Out of the six places I ate at on this visit to DC, AGORA was way ahead as the best for the quality and taste of the dishes. I'd go back.
We came for the bottomless brunch - $37 for unlimited plates AND unlimited drinks. While we only had mimosas, the drinks also included spirit mixers, which is usually pretty rare for bottomless brunches. The mimosas were quite good and the waiters came around often to refill, so you don't need to flag one down every time you want a refill.
In terms of the food, everything was very good and definitely had strong mediterranean flavors. We particularly liked the goat cheese, labneh, smoked salmon, and baklava french toast. The flatbreads were also both good. Overall the plates are pretty small, but it works out because you can try a little bit of everything.
Great tapas that actually leave you feeling full afterwards! I would highly recommended the grilled calamari and the scallops. It's a good spot to go with a group who enjoy sharing plates. It's pretty noisy though, so be aware of that. Overall very tasty and would definitely go back!
What a great place for Sunday Brunch! The bottomless Brunch at Agora is fantastic. The casual atmosphere makes it a relaxed brunch experience. A huge selection of food makes it quite an adventure in dining. This was my first visit to a Turkish cuisine restaurant and I was extremely impressed. Everything we tasted was delicious and the bottomless mimosa's made it a fun girls get together
I am not sure if it was due to a couple larger (10+) parties during our brunch, 1:30pm-3:30pm, but the service was subpar. Many of the dishes we ordered ended up at tables next to us, while other orders took extremely long to reach our table. It was not until the last 25 minutes of our meal that we started receiving our dishes in troves with only a couple minutes left to enjoy them.
I will try again as this place comes highly recommended among my friends. but they better bring their A-game next time!
I have been to Agora before and enjoyed it so recommended it to a friend for a lunch get together. The only positive thing to say about it was that we were able to sit outside on a lovely day which is one reason why I had chosen Agora. The food was ok, but servings were tiny. We were very unhappy about the terrible service. It took forever to order, get entrees (one was brought 15 mins. before the other), get a dessert menu, order, get the desserts, and get the bill. We weren't told that several desserts weren't available until our server finally came to take our orders. We also weren't given silverware until after our entrees arrived. In the beginning it was crowded, but later it wasn't at all busy and the service was still terrible. I won't be back.
We LOVED Ágora! Charming neighborhood feel and ambiance with the most amazing mezze selection. Every dish we tried was outstanding, cooked and presented perfectly with sauces that elevated the dish to the next level. Our server was excellent, attentive and informative about the different dishes we were interested in trying. Standouts were the beet salad, shredded zucchini pancakes, octopus and swoon worthy grilled chicken. Definitely going back the next time we travel to DC!
I ate at Agora over a year ago while on business in DC and have never forgotten the delicious meal and wonderful experience. So was very happy to find that it met my expectations when taking a friend there this past week. The food was superb. We ordered two prix fixe menus (a great deal) and split all the dishes. The Chicken Shish Tavuk was especially wonderful: tender, great sauce, good portion, but there wasn't a dish we didn't enjoy. The bread is fresh and warm, the service was perfect (our waiter offered to extend the prix fixe menu as my friend was caught in traffic), the ambiance just right. I'll not wait as long to return!
The three of us all agreed we loved our meals. Each of us ordered off the special prix fix menu. For $25. we each had either soup or a combination of spreads (both delicious), a vegetable dish and a protein dish (wonderful flavors and unique combinations) and baklava for dessert. Well worth the price.
Very knowledgeable staff made perusing the menu a wonderful part of the dining experience. We happily followed a few suggestions and were equally pleased making some freelance picks from their diverse menu. Food was fantastic and in a city without amazing options I would definitely considering going back to explore other menu items!
First visit and looking forward to the next. Freekah bowl with raisins, nuts, tons of pomegranate seeds etc was perfection. We also loved our three spread sampler. Excellent table service enhanced the already terrific food. (That means you, broccoli casserole man!)
We have been to DC twice and have eaten at Agora both times. The food is fabulous. But, I most want to compliment the wait staff. Our waiter (the same on 2 years apart) insisted that we relax and enjoy. He didn't rush us at all, even though they were busy. I just love this restaurant!
It was my birthday and I wanted to try something different. Onur was our waiter. He's from Turkey and his love of his country and food was so fun. We ate everything he recommended. Our 10 year old LOVED the grilled chicken AND the pita bread and especially the Turkish cherry drink. Onur brought out an apricot dessert and Turkish tea for my birthday. We had a perfect experience! I wish I could rate it higher!!
Dining at Agora is always a delight & I'm there often. The menu is terrific and the food is always delicious and superbly prepared and presented. Lots of fun to share small plates and taste everything on the table. The service is top-notch and very friendly. The sidewalk cafe is a great place for people watching, too. We are so lucky to have this gem of a restaurant in the neighborhood.
Hadn't been here in years and am, in general, very suspect of the food options on 17th Street (other than Komi and Little Serow) but was VERY pleasantly surprised by the food! All great quality, very tasty and a nice evening. Highly recommend and will definitely go again if/when I'm in the mood for good Mediterranean cuisine!
