One of the Frank Gehry-designed spaces, AGO Bistro is conveniently located on the first floor with access from Dundas Street. The restaurant is casual chic: modern Danish furnishings are paired with acrylic tabletops in a multitude of vibrant colours. Etched glass and vertical-grain Douglas fir also accent the space. With a dedication to using the best local produce, menus reflect seasonal changes and availability. Great place for drinks, especially before or after visiting the AGO. The feature cocktail was fantastic, and apparently it changes every day. Service was friendly and the ambience is cozy. Try to hit Cinq a Sept for good value. I would recommend AGO Bistro for any occasion, really, from business drinks to date nights.
While the seating was good and it was not too noisey at lunch time, I didn't think the food was better than fair. The tortiere was greasey(I have eaten many different versions of it) and the accompanying salad was lettuce thrown in a small bowl with an uninteresting dressing. The same could be said of the desserts. The server was very pleasant and attentive. I wouldn't go back or recommend it unless it was a matter of convenience. There are many good restaurants in the area and I was sorry I had not arranged to meet elsewhere. I gave overall rating as fair because the quality of food matters to me.
When our lunch seemed to take longer than expected by the restaurant staff they apologize d and brought us complimentary fries to nibble on and at the end offered complimentary coffee or tea..we had not even noticed that the food was taking very long,,,delicious ,interesting and nicely presented
The food has high ambitions but falls flat. The bread plate at $7 seems, frankly, outrageous. The bread is good but the price is not. It came with a "herbacious spread" which was actually a bean paste, not herbacious at all. The French-Canadian Tourtière was a white-washed version, a bland excuse for what should be a dish with gusto. The pastry was a standard commercial pastry, or a facsimile thereof. Perhaps the filling was the same. The chili chocolate cake was a good idea, but very dry. The service was energetic and attentive but strangely theatrical, like an actor playing the part of a slightly irritating waiter. He was a master of the "we" word, as in "Have we had a chance to look at the menu yet?" The space is nice enough, clean and airy, and the tables have enough space between them for a private conversation. If the food had been delicious, the prices would have been just right. But in this case it felt over-priced. I expected better. Maybe it would be better to order classics here, like hamburgers and fries... not sure, but that's my guess.
The wait staff we had was terrific and able to answer questions about wine and explain details about some of our food choices. Service was quick without being pushy.
The tourtiere could have done with a few more spices, however the pastry was quite good and fork tender.
This is the first time we've been since it changed to the bistro and would go back again.
I was disappointed with the prix fixe menu. The duck breast was tough and the serving of vegetables was very small. The dessert though was very good. It did not correspond to the add shown on the gallery site. We sat in a quiet place which was good. We had a glass of Cava before our meal. I would have thought that they would have served a little nibbler to go with it or suggest something .... I had mentioned it was my husband's birthday but no attention was made to it. I don't think I will go back.
Went here for an anniversary dinner. Very interesting menu inspired by the Guillermo Del Toro exhibit. Chose it for the vegetarian options. Food was quite good. Service was nice. I liked the place because it was quiet (Wednesday evening) yet the restaurant had enough diners so it did not feel empty. Overall, the food is a bit pricey, but for an occasional meal, it was a lovely change. I'd go back if they had more vegetarian options on their regular menu.
The food was excellent and the service top-notch. I had the grilled chicken salad with a Thai dressing. The toasted pecans added a nice crunch. It was delicious!
My friend had the PEI mussels which were cooked in pale beer and had a few grape tomatoes . Unusual but tasty. Looking forward to our next visit to the Gallery and lunch at the Bistro.
I used to love Frank but my meal was average. Steamed mussels were tasty but the fries arrived cold. The portions for the price were also small for both my meal and my friend's, who ordered pasta. In addition to a juice, coffee, sorbet and a donut, the bill came with tip to just under $80 which was an absolute rip off.
Have been coming here since 2008 when it opened.
First time the food was below the standard you set with Frank. Menu was unimaginative.
How about a great salad with high quality fresh organic ingredients?
I had 3 charred spears of romaine for $14. Low value and taste appeal.
we arrived at the hostess desk at 130 pm. The restaurant was 1/2 empty
We were told by the woman working there that the restaurant was fully booked and no openings. We said we would only be 30 minutes and she said no. It was hard to believe that every single seat would be used in the next 30 minutes.
We then proceeded to book a seat on open table and walked back to the desk and told her we had just reserved on open table and she seated 2 of us at a table for 4....
It was so ridiculous. She should be fired. She has zero customer service ability!!!!! My friend and I were so angry at the treatment. Not a good way to treat customers if you are trying to run this as a business!
