We haven't been to the Afton House in a while, and with some of the mixed reviews on this site, I was a little nervous. I am happy to report that the Afton House is still a great dining experience in every way! The food was excellent, service was top notch, and the cozy ambience and holiday décor really helped make it a special evening for our family. For menu selections, we had the 'baseball' steak, with mashed and asparagus; braised short ribs, also with mashed and asparagus; house Caesar and seafood chowder, crab cakes and seafood pasta. All was done to perfection, with the exception of the pasta, which had a flavor my son wasn't familiar with. So they comped his whole meal. Afton House also has a very good wine selection, and the crème brulee and coffee topped everything off nicely.
I highly recommend this fine dining establishment for any special occasion. Thank you Afton House!
We went for the Thanksgiving Buffet. It was very disappointing because we've had some wonderful meals in their regular dining room and spend the night. The service was absolutely terrible, we waited at least 8 minutes before someone even came to our table. We wanted another glass of wine, server never came back. The salmon, beef, and dressing were the best choices and the worst items being the fried fish, the veg, cesear salad, the rolls and the water. We asked to pay for some bottled water... They didn't have any.
Our suggestion skip their large buffet servings and just go to the main dining room for a nice meal.
We have been going to the Thanksgiving buffet here for 4 yrs and this was the absolute worst experience. Our server was so inconvenienced when we asked for something to drink and she only came to our table when we flagged her down. Food has gone down in quality and for the price of the meal I would rather have gone to Perkins
We had the Thanksgiving Buffet. The buffet line was very nicely setup and lots of options.
Fresh Vegetables, stuffing, Harvest Squash Salad and Smoked Salmon were especially good. Ham was very moist but the turkey we had was dry.
Had the pumpkin pie for dessert and was not happy with it. Only ate a few bites and left the rest. By then we were full anyway so did not get a different dessert.
We have been going to the Afton House Inn for Thanksgiving brunch for more than a dozen years so we can make credible comparisons. There were not enough staff working. The ones who were there were making valiant efforts to keep up. Our first trip up to the buffet found no mashed potatoes no squash no turkey. Second trip up not much better. The buffet line was confused at the meat area because first came gravy then meat which meant everyone had to double back and interrupt other diners. Once we were seated at the table the wait staff was too busy to serve us well I had to get up and flag her down as she raced nearby. Finally sure what happened to the water but it was undrinkable
Enjoyed Thanksgiving 2017 buffet, for feeding a very large number of people well done. That being said a few things could have been better - the dinner rolls were yuck, the cranberry sauce needed alot more suguar and the turkey was super dry. The beef and pork were very good, as was the potatoes, stuffing, beans and carrots and the gravy. Dessert was okay, the pie would have been better if offered warmed. Overall thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, glad to skip the cooking and clean up after this year. Would go again.
Very disappointing dining experience. We were at Afton House for Thanksgiving Buffet. The food was way below average, and terribly over-priced. The server was clearly trying to rush us out. There too many great restaurants in Stillwater and Hudson to bother heading down to Afton, anymore.
I had the mushroom pasta dish which was timed to arrive with the table side prepared Steak Diane. The Paste dish was luke warm, with undercooked mushrooms, lacked flavor, had what appeared to be a small pool of water at the bottom and was a extremely small sized portion. A simple addition of butter, salt, pepper, and garlic would have kept this dish from being a complete failure. The Steak Diane dish was very good served with a bed of potatoes, cooked green beans and carrots with a sweet demi glaze. The medallions a bit small and thin given the price point and the demi glaze was just a bit too sweet.
Very nice early dinner on a Saturday at the Afton House Inn. Haven’t been here for years. Good food. I had the Goldie’s Walleye, which was perfect; my companion had a very nice filet mignon. Both entrees done very well. My only complaint, which is minor, is the price was a bit steep for the value. The entrees came only with a side of gluey rice and “market vegetables”, which was a few sprigs of asparagus. Service was outstanding, and this is one of the few places left offering tableside Caesar salad prep as well as Cherries Jubilee and Bananas Foster. We both had other (fantastic) desserts, but very much enjoyed watching the show as other diners ordered these items.
Poor to say the least. Had our annual mothers day outing there. It was a total let down. Poor service and quality of food. Complained afterword's and received a gift certificate. So gave them a second chance. Crab cakes were under cooked with no crisp on crust as not hot enough pan. Cesar salad had giant pieces of romaine which needed to be cut. Seafood chowder not thick, too much broth.
Too bad went years ago and considered this place of quality. But no longer. Wont return and not recommend. Went Sunday evening and were one of two couples there. I guess not much interest there.
Father's Day brunch already has a few negative reviews- so maybe just an off day (of the Chef was literally off). The buffet was overpriced for the selections in my opinion. The price should have commanded a roast beef station but instead had KC Brisket that was sliced in the wrong direction. The food was indeed cool like another review stated and who has a breakfast buffet without bacon. I should stop right there.
Service was exceptional but since I am not from the area I won't make a special trip back.
We were celebrating Mother's Day with my wife and her mother. Without question, this experience was a major disappointment. The food was warm (barely), the food trays were practically empty, the one pasta salad tasted like it had been mixed with a very cheap tasting salad dressing. The only thing that tasted good was the pecan pie.
At a price of $28 per person we expected more......a helluva lot more. Adios Afton House....you won't see us again, and we've shared this bad experience with many people.
Went there for Mothers Day brunch. Overpriced. Most of the food tasted just ok with the exception of the sliced beef. That was very good. Who ever heard of a brunch with no bacon? Disappointing. It was ok but don't need to revisit. Waitress was extremely nice and efficient.
It was a very nice Easter Brunch, large variety of entrees and side dishes. The roast beef and cons salmon were exceptionally well done, melt in your mouth beef. A little confusion at the start as to which buffet we were suppose to use, overall a nice dink g experience in a quiet enough atmosphere to have good conversation.
The ambiance, menu, and prices say formal, but the service and clientele disagree. You won't feel the least bit out of place here in jeans, and you shouldn't go into it expecting a truly "formal" dining experience from a service standpoint. That said, if you feel like dressing up, go for it. Don't be surprised if you're the only ones though!
Don't get me wrong. Formal dining is generally too stuffy for me anyways. This was a very nice balance. We had a good time. The food was good as well, with some unique options too. An error on the staffs part was remedied quickly and compensated with a free dessert without our asking for it, so that was nice too.
Valentines Day dinner. Server forgot a few items, one of the two steaks ordered was underdone and sent back, out of walleye (at 7:30 pm) and creme brûlée. Food was warm when served, not hot. Food tasted ok, nothing special. With a couple drinks, salads, entrees, and dessert the bill was $157. Way overpriced for the quality. We would have been better off eating on the bar side. Too bad, too, as I've been happy there in the past. Won't be doing dinner there again. Maybe just the bar side when stopping in from the river.
My family and I had a disappointing Valentine's Day dinner at the Afton House Inn on Tuesday night. The hostess performed admirably when we arrived for our 7:30 PM reservation, but I was told that the bartenders at the Current (next door) had failed to acknowledge my sister for ten minutes while she waited for us. From there, our experience was, sadly, an error filled meal. Of the four entrees we'd ordered, only one was correctly served. My daughter's order (soup and salad) only had soup until we'd reminded our server that her salad wasn't served. When it was served, the ranch dressing was lumpy, as if resembling bleu cheese dressing.
This occurred only after I was informed that my first entree order, prime rib, was no longer available-- well after the time we'd ordered our meal. My sister's entree of grilled mushroom and linguini with chicken had no mushrooms; she had also ordered a salad which was never served. Our server offered to bring her a salad after we pointed out the error, but declined.
Since the prime rib wasn't available, I ordered the Steak Diane, medium rare. When it was served, it was very rare, and of course, lacking mushrooms (just like my sister's linguini.) Given the situation with the prime rib, the owner graciously comped my entree. We did not ask for any further discount, but we were finally dismayed by the server's failure to offer a dessert menu, particularly after all of the errors with the rest of our meal.
As a local resident and longtime patron of both the Current and Afton House Inn, I was saddened to experience such a dismal effort by both the server and the kitchen staff on a critical night. My wife and I have utilized the Afton House Inn for large parties on different occasions over the past ten years, but I am extremely reluctant to return after our Valentine's Day dinner there this week.
My first review ever
Valentine dinner in romantic Alton inn. First time customer. Arrived 10 min early and was told " give me a minute" . Table located in a quiet room street side. Menu and drinks came quickly. Selected crabe cakes and mussels clams for apptz followed by some pasta for my wife and a prime rib for me already sensing it was probably a safer bet .
The crabe cakes came first 40 minutes in. No empty plates for us so we ate each a cake on the corner of the table. 70 minutes in and my valentine asked me if the kitchen was gone to fishing the mussels... shortly after we were told that the mussels should be here shortly.
Then we were told they would arrive with the entrees close by.... you guessed it, mussels arrived 30 seconds before our entrees without an empty plate to at least share the empty shells. My wife's pasta had the hard mushroom stems. The mussels tasted dry which is quite difficult to do, did not finish them. Prime rib was 1/2 inch on one side and 1 1/2 inch on the other with a large piece of hard fat . The only surprise was the bacon mashed potatoes quite good!
We were hoping for dessert and heard from the table nearby that the kitchen was out of creme brûlée on valentine day,
the dessert menu was a piece of paper 4x5 with creme brûlée, tiramisu, apple dumpling with ice cream and bottled caramel sauce and chocolate truffle 3 each or 3 for $7.5 ??? No creme brûlée, the tiramisu was likely a frozen feast , we shared the apple. Was ok.
On the positive side we had plenty of time to talk and it was so mediocre that it was funny or perhaps my wife and I had decided that nothing will ruin valentine.
It was Valentine's Day - so we need to give the restaurant a bit of a break. The steak & asparagus were a bit charred. Service was a offered in hiccups. The guitar player hired for ambiance was singing songs about "bad love" .... but it was Valentine's Day.
We were very disappointed in this visit to the Afton House. We have dined here on numerous occasions for birthdays, anniversaries, with friends for brunch and always had excellent service and delicious food. New Years Eve was extremely disappointing. The service was ok but not great. The food was below par. The caesar salad looked and tasted like it came out of a bag instead of the inns great tableside made Caesar salad. Out of the six of us, three were very disappointed in our meal. Two of us had the prime rib which was cold, as was the potatoes. It took quite awhile to flag down the waitress and she took them and said she would get us new but ended up bringing the same dishes just heated up in the microwave. Seriously, microwaved food at a fine dining establishment!?! Another guest had the Walleye and he said it too was cool and overly breaded, very flavorless. The filet and the two pasta/rice dishes were very good. We were not compensated in any way for this less than desirable experience.
There was only 1 person to seat us, take our order and serve the food plus she also was checking people in for the rental rooms upstairs. Long, long wait between anything we needed done. Food was okay but overpriced for what we got. My filet was undercooked and overly peppered. The apple dumpling was hard on top, damp on the bottom and the apple wasn't cooked enough (I needed a knife to cut it!). My husband had to send his walleye back as it was overcooked and too dry to eat. We won't be going back here again soon.
We had booked a table at Afton House Inn for a Thanksgiving meal. The place was packed and we felt like cattle. The choice of food was very limited for a buffet style. They would not let us take our pie home, although only one piece was being offered, in the "all you can eat !" buffet.It might be a nice restaurant during the year, just don't go on Thanksgiving or Christmas for that matter.
We were the only people in the fine dining area, the Inn was having a wine tasting event in another part of the restaurant. Overall it was a nice quiet dinner, service was very good, which you would expect with an empty house. The dining area had a slight musty smell. The food was excellent we had sea bass and salmon
Always exceptional customer service received from the staff. I had ordered the Shrimp Scampi and, they were low on some ingredients had to swap a few things out of the meal. I am usually here for the special occasions when they have their Cold Fresh Water Lobster in. There was no banana foster! That's usually worth the drive up! :( The Steak Diane is the way to go. We will be back again.
We've been to Afton numerous times and finally decided to try the Afton Inn, knowing it is a higher priced fine dining. The value was good. We were surprised to find they offer table-side Caesars and Steak Diane, nicely-paced food service, and a quiet atmosphere (desperately lacking these days).
