Afton House Inn
8 of us went to Afton House for my dad’s 70th birthday...my parents were in the Twin Cities from northern MN and my sister came from TX. Even though it was an hour away from our house, I chose Afton House because of it’s ambiance and table side cooking option for a few of the menu items...I wanted a different dining experience than just going to typical restaurant. They did not disappoint!
The ambiance of this quaint fine dining restaurant and the fabulous service by both our server and the manager (who did the table side cooking) is what made this experience unforgettable! Other than a few couples that came and went, we pretty much had the whole place to ourselves...which I thought was a little strange for a 6:30 reservation on a Friday night...but it was perfect for being able to talk across the large round table. We chose to bring our own wine and pay the $15/bottle corkage fee, which I highly recommend doing.
I had the table side Caesar salad which was very good, the table side steak Diane that was good but not great and the bananas Foster which I thought was superb. We also had a couple appetizers (the fondue & Brussels sprouts) that we’re good but not necessarily stand out amazing.
So overall it was a fabulous experience and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a small town, quaint place to go. It was good once but I’m not sure I would make the long drive to go there again and I wouldn’t get the Steak Diane again...I would try something else. But the service & ambiance at this restaurant is what really made the experience exceptional!
Very disappointed. Long wait to be seated even with reservations. Slow, slow service. Warm drinks, and not in a good way. Walleye was dry like it had been sitting all night. Steaks were over cooked. We ordered 2 filets, one medium rare one rare, both came out medium to medium well. Since it took 2 hours to get that we were way beyond sending them back. Their excuse was that it was Valentines Day. Okay, that makes it even more important to do a good job. And it’s not like it is a new restaurant. They KNOW what Valentines Day is like. Plan for it! Won’t be going back.
Very unfortunate experience. Reservations were for 8pm. We were not seated until after 830pm. We ordered our food shortly after being seated, but did not eat until nearly 10pm. Ordered the surf & turf (6oz. Filet and Lobster tail) and it left a lot to be desired. Steak was bland and lobster was overcooked. Hardly what I would expect for a $150 meal.
Horrible Valentines Day experience has 8 pm reservations did not get seated until 9pm. Took 20 minutes to get a drink at the bar. Host staff and bartenders ignored us completely. Dinner was cold. Waitress Peg was the only good thing about the night.
I had a reservation for 8 and we got seated an hour after. We waited about another hour and 15 minutes for our food. We were there for Valentine’s Day, so I thought they would be more prepared for the busyness. People were leaving before they even got their food, they were so sick of waiting! Food was good, but not worth the extremely long wait.
The quality of the food was very disappointing and overpriced. The cheese plate consisted of cubed cheese, diced strawberries, a chutney of some sort, crackers and bread. I ordered the baseball steak and it had no flavor. I ask for bearnaise sauce and was served mayonnaise - both the waiter and chef stated it was bearnaise - nope. There was a long wait for our meal. Poor services and a rude hostess. I would not waste my time.
We stayed at the Afton Inn for NYE and made an 8pm reservation at the Afon House, their "fine dining" restaurant. The ambiance was very pleasant, with live music and a reasonable noise level that allowed for conversation. The place was quite packed, being NYE. The experience was overall fine, however the food was only average. The bruschetta I had as a started was disappointing, basically bread with melted cheese on it and a marinara dip. Heavy and rather unauthentic. The gnocchi that came with the chicken dish that my girlfriend had were also disappointing. Good caesar salad, and the steak I had was also good, but overall disappointing from a food quality standpoint.
We have taken many enjoyable brunches at the Afton House over the past 15 years but Thursday was our first Thanksgiving dinner at your fine restaurant and Inn. We had a delightful time in the Wheel Room dining on very good food in a very pleasant atmosphere. We hope to be able to return next year.
Delicious Thanksgiving buffet, everything tasted homemade. (Had the memorable sight of the woman in front of me taking half a smoked salmon.). Loved the ambience and our table waitress Peggy was a delight. Highly recommend.
The Thanksgiving buffet experience was excellent as always. Four kinds of meat, two dressings, salad, green beans, squash, potatoes & gravy plus dessert. Delicious and reasonably priced too. Thanks Afton House Inn I will be back.
I would recommend Afton House for the Steak Diane and Bananas Foster - two items that you probably would not get in any other restaurant in the Twin City area if you are looking for the experience of table side cooking service with "old fashion fine dining of yesterday decade".
Was disappointed with the prime rib. It was over cooked and way too much fat. Rest of meal was fine. Had a wonderful wait person.
we had a lovely evening at the restaurant. It's a nice atmosphere, white tablecloths, very elegant.
Terrific hospitality, sever was attentive and very friendly. Caesar Salad made right at our table. The steaks we ordered were cooked to perfection. This is the second time we have eaten there and will go back for more! It is a great dining experience!
It has been a while since we have dined at the Afton House. It was a beautiful Saturday evening. The Inn was busy as they had a wedding party in the big dining room. We were escorted to a small intimate dining room. We were warmly greeted by the front desk as well as by our server. Our server who has been at the Afton House for eight years was very knowledgeable about the menu. They have a lovely selection of wines both by the glass and bottle. We decided to indulge ourselves and ordered the tableside Caesar Salad - the presentation and resulting salad were well worth the price. I thoroughly enjoyed the short rib which was fork tender. My husband had the Chicken Saltimbocca which was also delicious. Unfortunately the generous portions (which we finished) did not leave us room for dessert. We will definitely return to try other items we were tempted by on the menu.
While the food was good, the service good, etc., overall, we were very disappointed --- the Afton House Inn's menu did not give a lot of options and, particularly given the cost, the portions were miniscule. We will not be going back and certainly will not be recommending the Afton House Inn to our friends and family.
We went to Afton House for my birthday. We had the curry duck and the chicken Milanese. The food was excellent, the service great and the ambience quiet and perfect to enjoy our dinner. Our server Peggy was helpful, funny and knowledgeable. We would recommend the experience and will return again.
Had the Father’s day brunch. Food was good, but did not stand out. Servers were very attentive. The decor is eclectic. Location is lovely.
The waitress was very attentive and quite charming and the setting, the ambiance, are quite rustic and very soothing, relaxing. Our dishes though were quite diverse both in taste and in quality. I had the Indian dish, Duck Red Curry, and it was delicious. The Roasted Vegetable Risotto was both crunchy and overcooked. And the Grilled Mushroom Linguini was not cooked correctly as the pasta was overcooked. Clearly, we were not impressed. We are locals and unsure if we are going to repeat the experience.
We had the prime rib and it was delicious. The service was fast and our server was friendly. This was our first time there and will definitely return.
We took my Mother-In-Law out for Mother's Day. We were looking for something a bit upscale at a moderate price with great food and where we could enjoy conversation (some had hearing aids). Afton House Inn fit all perfectly! We had reservations and our table was ready when we arrived a bit early.
The server we had made our experience! She was a gem! The tables were nicely set with linen. We were in the room with the buffet tables, hooray!, we were grateful we didn't have to travel. We had a lovely window table. The food was fine, nothing to rave about.

I would not recommend the restaurant to anyone. We had 5pm reservations, were the only ones in the entire restaurant the entire time we ate which took an hour and a half. We maybe saw our server four times and two of those was to bring us our food, we ordered an appetizer. I ordered the crab cake which was falling apart. My husband ordered the soup which was cold. I ordered steak medium for doneness it was well done. My husbands chicken was smothered with what seemed like a 1/2" of cheese and was also dry. For being the ONLY people in the whole darn restaurant it took forever to get our food and not once did the server apologize or say anything as to why it was taking so long. Poor Poor Poor experience all around, very disappointed.

It was our 46th anniversary and we live in Maplewood MN, and I decided to make a "non monumental anniversary, something special for just us two. It was WONDERFUL!
The food and service for amazing. Staff was very attentive to all of our names The steak Diane was the best and prepared right st your table.
My wife and I have been waiting to try the Afton Inn for dinner, so since we had baby sitters I made reservations. The best part of dinner was being with my wife, the rest was completely forgettable. Until I get my credit card statement that is. Mediocre service, cold dinning room (my wife kept her heavy winter jacket on for most of the 90 minutes we were there) and subpar and under seasoned entrees. If you are on the fence about going here, skip it. Head to up the river to Stillwater for Marx or LoLo's. It will be better food, a better experience and about a third of the price.
Since there was a snow storm going on outside we were literally the only ones in the dining room
The only negative is that the decor is old and worn out. Refresh the decor and it’s a 5 all day.

Unfortunately, the wait was long to get seated...the buffet was missing items already at 4:30...the food that was suppose to be hot was cold...we weren't even offered dessert (had to ask)...both salads were not even tasty and everything else wasn't impressive tasting. This is the third time in a year that I have been disappointed with the taste and quality of the food served. It's questionable that I will be back. Too bad as this use to be noted for really "fine" dining and even 2 years ago I was still being impressed. Not any more.
Tyler, Thank you for your review. I truly apologize for the long wait as we had tables sitting a lot longer than planned out for. There is no excuse for cold food. We served over 900 people on Thanksgiving and we replenished the buffet items every 15-20 minutes, so everything should have been fresh and hot. Food not so good this year for Thanksgiving. Not many choices. Mashed potatoes were good but ran out quickly and slow to come out. Turkey wasn’t your regular sliced off the bird, looked like it was purchased in thick pieces. No sweet potatoes..disappointing. Had some cold salad with squash/yams in it😖. Green beans good but again very slow on replenishing. Lines long and slow. Just not enough food overall. No dessert table, had to ask for them to bring you a tiny sliver of pie. Coffee Luke warm at best

We had an excellent time at the Afton House Inn. The food was great and the atmosphere was very nice. Our server treated us like we were the only customers she was serving. We would recommend going to the Afton House for a pleasant experience.
We were there for the first time with friends from out of town visiting for a birthday and were told that it was good food so we gave it a try. The service for the price point and the label "fine dining" was terrible with dirty plates, having to ask repeatedly for water and more drinks, extra glassware sitting on the table the whole meal. Waited for tableside Caesar salad which was the best part of the whole meal although the appearance of the server was again not what you would expect with "fine dining:. The entrees were not as described on the menu and the meat was tough and chewy. Unfortunately not worth the money or the time.
Great experience! I took my boyfriend there for his birthday. We both ordered Caesar salad and Steak Diane, both of which are prepared tableside. Really fun and unique experience! Staff was amazing and our cocktails were high quality. This place is perfect for special occasions. I've already recommended it to my friends.
This was our first visit to Afton House - a Saturday night dinner to celebrate our anniversary. The food was delicious and the servers were friendly/fun. We had the walleye, the prime rib, and the (authentic!) bananas foster. It's fine dining without the pretence. The historic charm at Afton House can't be beat - a hidden gem on the river.
Mother’s Day brunch - food was not promptly replaced, so many options were empty and totally picked over. What food was there was terrible. Complete waste of $100...!
2 Adults, 3 Kids, Brunch; $140 w/ tip. The value just wasn't there.
We had a very nice Mother's day brunch in the fine dining area of the home. We did not experience anything but great food great service.
