Afternoon Tea at The Merrion Hotel
On my birthday my husband and I went to the Merrion for an high tea. The food could have been a bit better. It was spread over 2 courses. Why not 3 or 4 courses? That would have been better in my opinion. The desserts at the end were unbelievable. So beautiful and so tastefull! But the rest.... Not so special. Especially the sandwiches could have been prettier and more tastefull. I think this high tea is a bit overprized.
The hotel itself is lovely. But we thought the second course (the art sculptures of the paintings) were far too sickly sweet (and I have a sweet tooth). The idea of recreating paintings into an edible piece of art is a great but I think the chef should reconsider the ingredients he puts into them! Also, the staff were nice but I felt like we had about 4 different waiters serving us, and asking if we were ok very often. Which might not be the worst problem but sometimes it just feels like they’re constantly interrupting your conversations. My favourite sandwhich was the chicken and truffle, it was delicious.
We enjoyed our Art Tea so much, the room, the service, food.... all amazing
A lovely way to spend the afternoon! Very cosy with delicious food.
Endless drinks too which made it excellent value.
Two of us came for afternoon tea. We were seated at a comfortable couch in front of the fire. The service was excellent and the food was great. We couldn't finish everything but got our leftovers boxed up to bring home. The art inspired desserts are very special. There's also a huge variety of teas to choose from.
What a beautiful experience afternoon tea is at The Merrion. Extra special detail for Lauras 21st and Jonathans 18th with a candle on both their pastry platters. Worth the experience. 💖
We had a wonderful afternoon at The Merrion and would recommend it highly.
In particular our server Jeremy was a delight. Very professional and friendly.
Afternoon tea with my mam
Overall the experience was pleasant. I felt that for the high tea experience, the lounge area was too casual and filled with too many people that were in the lounge for an after work cocktail or more like a singles bar.
There were multiple servers that were distracted bringing out cocktails and nuts and not focused on the tea experience.
I Would highly recommend that someone from your staff take notes from the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago where they do an exquisite high tea experience where the setting is appropriate, the servers are focused, the food is impeccable and the desserts are second to none
Great experience. Staff explained tea experience and were very pleasant. Food was superior.
We had afternoon tea and the service and food were superb.
We really enjoyed the whole experience
Loved it. Went for the ambience mainly. Wanted to treat my mam. Love how 'safe' and relaxed we felt. Have to say I prefer my mams scones and lemon drizzle.. lovely staff as always. Thank you
We had the loveliest afternoon tea at the hotel. No one rushed us on and William at the front desk could not have been more gracious and helpful. He explained things about the art and made it a point to show us tho gs about the paintings that were not evident. Will definitely return again!
We really enjoyed our afternoon but I was surprised that the scones weren't fresh. I know I should have said it at the time but I didn't want to bring attention to it until my colleague said it to me afterwards ! If you're not sweet toothed (which I'm not) you feel that the sandwiches aren't quite enough. Especially the filling in the cucumber one - could be a bit more generous. The tea was beautiful however.
And we were very well looked after so thank you. (Dublin)
Marvelous experience in an authentic setting with first class service, comfort and interesting blend of good taste and class.
Fantastic experience at afternoon tea at the merrion, the service is second to none. Our server Aideen was very attentive and extremely friendly. The food and drinks were amazing. The hot chocolate at the merrion is the best I've ever had. Can't wait to come back soon!!
Celebrating a little time away with my daughter - such a lovely experience
Thank you for a lovely afternoon. It was a special treat for my mother who had her first Christmas as a widow. The hotel was beautiful and the staff were excellent and very friendly. Loved the whole experience, very relaxing. One comment about the food: would have liked more sandwiches or savory to balance out the delicious cakes and scones as well as the art desserts. We are planning lunch there soon x
Delicious food and impeccable service in an elegant atmosphere. Highly recommended.
We all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea experience. It was a real treat and we would definitely come again
The experience would have been absolutely perfect except the couple from New York who was (loudly) video chatting their friends back home. It ruined the experience, I wish staff asked them to be respectful or leave.
Overall, enjoyable afternoon. Expected scones and cakes to be more memorable, would have to admit only average. Clotted cream and lemon curd were lovely.
The atmosphere was lovely. Seated beside a beautiful open fire.
Asked could we have plain sandwiches but unfortunately the order was not correct.
The Christmas collection of desserts were not as impressive as previous visits.
The service was very poor. At one stage we waited over 10 minutes for staff to return with clean plates and tea.
Gluten Free sandwiches did give the impression they were made some time previous, bread exterior dry and aged. Staff very friendly and attentive. Felt location was very dated and lacked spirit, not joyful and showing little Christmas spirit.
Absolutely loved it! Service and food were exceptional! Beautiful hotel great for Christmas afternoon tea! Connor, our waiter couldn’t have been more helpful! He was lovely! Highly recommend to anyone!
Ok this is the BEST HOTEL by far in Dublin for EVERYTHING with the exception of the FOOD for AFTERNOON/FESTIVE tea. I have had afternoon tea before and it was more or less the the same experience. I also wrote to the hotel directly of my disappointment. The food is stodgy and cheap. It does NOT represent the Merrion whatsoever and that is why I cannot understand why this type of food is still being served for this occasion. Most people had left half of their food on the plate. Far too much sweet is given and not enough savoury. But it’s also the quality of food that I have an issue with. It goes back to the old saying quality over quantity. A change of menu is badly required. My three colleagues who I had invited were in agreement. I actually won’t mention the price as I actually believe if the food was changed you are then paying for the overall experience which as I stated at the outset is the best in Dublin. An honest reply given above.
I was so looking forward to my Festive tea - had a voucher so checked this at reception before going in - was assured it would cover the tea in its entirety. Got a nice table and was joined by a friend. Started off well but then a group of business men sat at the table beside us - they were not at afternoon tea. They proceeded to open laptops and conduct a meeting - very intrusive - phones and laptops. We eventually asked our male server to ask one of them to close his laptop - it was right in our faces. He just banged it closed, changed seat (at same table) and meeting continued on. It spoiled our tea - there were signs on the tables not to use mobile phones - I couldn't believe the hotel did not move them to another location. We had some wine with our tea so when the bill came I was ready to pay for the wine but a "drama" ensued then with the waiter that the voucher only covered regular tea and not festive - I was mortified in front of my friend - I had already checked this at reception to avoid any such issue. Eventually he didn't charge us (extra 8 euro) but again the damage was done - I would have expected better from the Merrion Hotel. Finally I have had afternoon tea in the Shelbourne Hotel and it was a much better experience - there was a designated area so no business meetings - there was also a much better service. There did not seem to be adequate staff in the Merrion that evening - several times there was no waiter in the room and we had to wait for fresh tea - the food was just delivered once so very little work there. The Shelbourne offered extra sandwiches if required - no mention here.
The only bit that worked seemlessly was the booking process with Open Table.
Really enjoyed the afternoon tea at the merrion. Very generous with the amount of food we were given, so much so that we had loads to take home. The service was great, the staff were very attentive. The food was lovely and a great variety of things to choose from, well worth the money in my opinion. Lovely ambiance and overall felt very Christmassy. The only negative I would have is that when I originally booked it (back in October I think) I thought I would be booking the art tea. However I wasn’t aware that once December 1st hit, they change the menu to a festive one for Christmas. This was a little disappointing that this wasn’t advised when I first booked it and I wasn’t notified of this. However, that is the only bad thing I would have to say. Other than that, it was great. I’ll be back between January and next November to book the art tea :)
Lovely atmosphere and very attentive service. Great for a nice long chat in the afternoon.
Always amazing service and food. Each table has a special atmosphere
Was very enjoyable. Nice food beautifully presented. Amazing range of teas. Service excellent. Armchairs too low and hard ... need softcushions!
Food was excellent though It’s a lot of sweet foods. The service was so good. The waiter made suggestions here and there about teas to order and how to drink them and she was spot on with her advice. I had an iced tea that tasted like a cocktail!
It was perfect. I couldn’t have asked for more.
Did not have all tea's available that were on the menu. Not having all items on a menu for the amount of money being spent was disappointing.
Service was very good
Beautiful setting, lovely food & attentive service.
Amazing afternoon tea. Well worth the money and good service.
Lovely Afternoon tea, quiet with very friendly staff
Our server Aoife was really friendly and bubbly and was very genuine. It made for a relaxing and entertaining time with my family.
It was a miserable wet day outside but we were beautifully cocooned in beautiful surroundings. A five star experience
My friend and I really enjoyed our experience. It was our first time doing this. The only small negative was the fact that our table was at the back of a sofa the had a party of 4. We felt our conversation was being listened to on a number of occasions. Not that we had anything to hide ... but just made us slightly uncomfortable.
