About Acme Food & Beverage Co.

The ovens are turned on early. Six o'clock most days. Earlier on Sunday. Within an hour, bread is rising, apples are being sliced. Pecan pies are pulled hot from the oven and left to cool. Ice cream churns in the machine. Cups of coffee steam on the prep table, the baker's cup marked with chocolaty fingerprints. By midmorning, pork shoulder, rubbed with spices the day before, is slowly smoked. And white buckets are filled with sliced onions. Corn is shucked. The stock that cooked all night is taken off the stove and strained. Bags of fresh shrimp are delivered in old grocery store bags. The waiters arrive in groups, shirts and ties on hangers. By then, every burner in the kitchen is being used. Herbs are chopped. Scallops cleaned. Ovens at 500 degrees. All sauces are checked. Bartenders polish their shakers. Silverware is rolled and every surface is wiped down. Music. Lights. Doors are opened. Dinnertime. At Acme. Seven nights a week. Local never tasted so damn good.

We always enjoy Acme! This time, we had a quiet table on the periphery of the main room. Lovely! Food was delicious. Sister loved her steak & frites! Thanks!

We first called to make a reservation. We wanted to come at 7:15 on a Monday evening. The hostess said either 6:30 or 7:30. I made the reservation on Open Table for 7:30. When we arrived, she was busy texting on her phone and appeared annoyed we were interrupting her. There were literally two other tables occupied. Plenty of open tables. Despite that, she seated us at a 2-top next to a loud party. We asked to move. She moved us to another small 2-top despite the fact there were probably 6 4-tops empty that were never occupied during our entire meal. Poor judgment on either her part or management's part. Waiter was good and food was good but hostess was miserable. And that affected our experience.

ACME does a great job with food and service. The only issue with ambiance is their lack of space. I was in the middle row of tables and constantly trying to scoot farther in to avoid people bumping their way by.

Acme cocktails are creative and fantastic. The food offerings are unique and well-described on the menu--and amazingly delicious. Service is prompt and attentive (without being overly so) and it's easy to get good recommendations. All around great place to eat--a Carrboro mainstay for excellent reason. Great Southern twists on global dishes.

Food is always exceptional. Great vibe. The wait staff and host ate always so inviting but also not overbearing. Just such a comfortable feel for a classy place.

We shared the pate which was excellent. They did not have bread service, but our waitperson was kind enough to bring us extra grilled bread for the pate. This was very much appreciated. Our main courses were salmon, duck, and short ribs (small plate). All of our meals were very good including the sides.

Acme used to be one of our favorite restaurants, and its food never disappoints. The menu is not extensive, but everything is tasty and the kitchen is generally very dependable (in perhaps 30 visits we have seen missteps in execution only once, and that visit might well have happened after a weather storm that can wreak havoc on the supply chain and staffing).

Alas, Acme's dessert menu has now become quite unsatisfying. It used to be one of our favorite places for dessert (especially the butterscotch pudding)--but now on two consecutive tries we've been underwhelmed. The execution on dessert is just not up to the rest of the food--a pear crumble was pleasantly warm, but it was soggy (like a bread pudding), with a bit too much alcohol that didn't evaporate properly.

Sadly, twice in a row is enough for me to remove it from my list of regular places. We'll visit again, but it'll probably be a longer interval than before.

Great ambiance and service, but food was a bit overpriced. Their signature starter cornbread wasn't exceptional and tasted like any southern mom's cornbread, and was way overpriced; maybe should've just come with the meal. Overall we had a great time and appreciated the nice service!

I love the cornbread so much and I'm never disappointed. I also frequently order the steak frites, but on this visit, this dish wasn't exceptional like usual. The steak portion was much smaller, and the ends of each piece were mainly fat.

We were still able to dine outside by the fountain, so we were able to enjoy the quiet.
As usual, the oysters were great (delish & so fresh) as were the calamari salad & relleno. The servers were all very attentive— we never felt neglected.

We will miss the perfect temps and the garden atmosphere once the weather turns, but then we will enjoy the warmth of the indoor seating— with the happy noise on the very busy Tuesdays.

We introduced friends to The Acme on a Wednesday night. Wanted reservation for 7 pm, but we were told they were booked. We ‘settled’ for 6:15 and we were glad we did! By 7 the restaurant was, indeed, full. As we wanted to have a chance to catch up, the quiet earlier hour was best. We had the special of
the night, Cobia, which was cooked to perfection with sides of roasted baby Brussels sprouts and puréed sweet potatoes-all very well done. One of our guests had the crab cakes on succotash, which he pronounced full of crab (albeit claw meat, not backfin or lump crab) and delicious. We shared the flourless chocolate dessert with salted caramel ice cream A fine dinner on all counts.

We had a lovely brunch out on the patio, with attentive and friendly service. The food was exceptional, and the setting outside is beautiful. We eat at Acme about once a month and it never fails to deliver. The dining room is always hopping, but there are several corners in which you can be a bit tucked away, which is better for conversation. My hubby and I love to grab a drink and a few apps at the bar.

The only negative was the temperature inside. We dined at Acme on September 28, 2017 and it was hot! Uncomfortable. The shoul d be more aware of the temperature so that diners can have a more enjoyable experience eating amazing food.

We went for the oyster blowout ands brought btwo neighbors, recently moved in, who had never been. the oysters were spectacular and the rest of the meal was great. Good cornbread as well as draft beer. Acme continues to be one of our go to places and I think our new neighbors will add it to their list.

Came to Acme after seeing their instagram page. I ordered the snapper dish that came with roasted brussel sprouts and ginger sweet potato mash in ponzu sauce. I had taste of everyone's dishes as well and everything was great except for the gumbo which was not particularly spectacular.

The service was great and our server had quite the personality.
