About Acme Food & Beverage Co.

The ovens are turned on early. Six o'clock most days. Earlier on Sunday. Within an hour, bread is rising, apples are being sliced. Pecan pies are pulled hot from the oven and left to cool. Ice cream churns in the machine. Cups of coffee steam on the prep table, the baker's cup marked with chocolaty fingerprints. By midmorning, pork shoulder, rubbed with spices the day before, is slowly smoked. And white buckets are filled with sliced onions. Corn is shucked. The stock that cooked all night is taken off the stove and strained. Bags of fresh shrimp are delivered in old grocery store bags. The waiters arrive in groups, shirts and ties on hangers. By then, every burner in the kitchen is being used. Herbs are chopped. Scallops cleaned. Ovens at 500 degrees. All sauces are checked. Bartenders polish their shakers. Silverware is rolled and every surface is wiped down. Music. Lights. Doors are opened. Dinnertime. At Acme. Seven nights a week. Local never tasted so damn good.

We went here for a Valentine's day date. I made sure to make a reservation a few weeks before so that we would have a spot. Upon arrival they greeted us and made us wait about a few minutes which wasn't bad at all considering it was a holiday. They then seated us and took our order. The server was very helpful and let us taste a wine we were interested in. We ordered two drinks I had the winter ration and my girlfriend had a white wine. Both were very good. We also ordered the calamari salad as an appetizer which had an awesome dressing and a very different but enjoyable taste. The portion of calamari was decent so I would say it was worth the $10 it cost. Then we ordered our entrees, I had the pecan crusted fried chicken ($23) and my girlfriend had the crab cakes ($26). They were both excellent choices. The mashed potatoes were amazing as well as the chicken. The crab cakes were also very good especially the sauce they used to drizzle on top of them. The portions were the right size and we ended up taking about a third of the fried chicken home. Overall the experience was worth it although for fine dining I think it may have been slightly more expensive than other places in the triangle. It's a great place that everyone should try at least once. I have yet to try their brunch and plan on coming back sometime soon.

We had a very enjoyable brunch. The service was nicely attentive without being on top of us. The salmon hand cake was delicious as was the omelet. We shared both which was a great way to do brunch. We topped it all off with a pair of Bloody Marys which were also quite good.

Well done Acme!

I was surprised that the food was not excellent. It was good. Bordering on very good. The entree portions were on the small side - almost like stingy. It made me wonder if they were running out that night. Why would you be chintzy on gumbo? A steak might be different...... I like the atmosphere and especially since our foursome scored a table where it was not so loud. Otherwise a very loud and close together kind of place. The service was fine, quite competent. A great neighborhood place. Really good. Just left you thinking, " it could be so much more......"

The Mardi Gras menu had a lot of good options and everyone in our party enjoyed their meal. Our waiter was very nice and knowledgeable, but service was a little slow. We were seated in the back room, so ambiance was not the best. Still, would be happy to return in the future.

Had brunch at ACME for the first time and the food and service were excellent. The ACME breakfast was just right. The potatoes are perfectly cooked and seasoned. The biscuits are large and fabulous - even when enjoyed the next day. It was unnecessarily chilly in the restaurant with all the fans on despite a cold day.

Brunch on Sunday. Had reservation for 1:00PM and were seated after only 5 minute wait. Although very busy, service was very good and fast. We all had breakfast items and everything was prepared perfectly. Poached eggs were hot with runny yolks; grits were creamy, not too runny and not too dry. Everyone was delighted with their entree. I would highly recommend!

A very handsome room and friendly atmosphere await at Acme, reported as top rated by the 2017 "best of" local magazine readers. It lived up to that reputation for our visit. We tried some of the adventurous specials, and were delighted with every plate. Service was both professional and friendly. The room is small and tables close together, but not uncomfortably so. We are pleased to recommend Acme!

The usual experience at ACME, which is to say great local sourced food, friendly wait staff and unique menu items. Also to say that parking was dicey and large open rooms were noisy. Still ... will be back!

Crab cakes were luke warm. Short rib special was not very impressive, especially for the price. Corn bread was very crumbly and dry, not as good as it usually is. Ive had some great dining experiences here, but this visit was rather sub par.

I had the so-called Gumbo. It tasted OK, but far from special and the portion was more of an appetizer, and it was not what I considered Gumbo. My meal consisted of a about 1/5 cup of rice centered on the plate with four shrimp placed around it. Then there was a gravy, with a couple slivers of sausage, covering it. I asked for bread to go with it but was advised that they only had cornbread which I declined. Very disappointing and would have bee permissible if it's cost was $8 instead of $22 My dinning partner's salmon meal was a bit better but not special either. The food served was far from gourmet even though it was presented as such. I have had good meals there in the past, but only about half the time. So many better options steps away: Spotted Dog, Venable, and even the Jade Palace is far better and consistent.

my friend and i were at Acme for an early rez on New Year's Eve. I was not impressed. Our waiter was totally unenthusiastic about everything and seemed quite bored (and this was the beginning of service about 5:30-6:00) He wasn't rude, just not at all gracious. Our cocktails were very good (French 75s) as was the chicken liver pate which we shared. However, both of our entrees were dinner plates piled with the vegetable sides with, in my case, a small piece of Mahi-Mahi seemingly cooked with little or no seasoning and looked as if it were leftover from another diner's plate. My dinner companion ordered crabcakes, again a huge amount of creamed spinach with burnt black tops on the two crabcakes. A complaint to the waiter brought another cooked crabcake to the table although his message to us from the kitchen is that they had been seared. I've never heard of seared crabcakes and wouldn't care to have one; in our opinion, crabcakes are delicate and should be gently cooked until golden brown. I had been to Acme quite a few times over the years as I lived and worked in Chapel Hill in the early 2000s. I remember it as a cozy restaurant with quite good food but I'm sorry that I won't be going back ... it's changed and not for the good.

Visited ACME for Sunday brunch with friends from out of town. They loved everything about the the place from the moment we walked in. Our waiter, Lahoda, was friendly, engaging and full of info to guide us to the ‘right’ menu selections. The food was perfectly prepared and flavors were great ( handmade pie, grits bowl, omelets). We lingered over coffee in order to catch up and enjoy ourselves, never feeling rushed out. Our visit reminded me to come back more often.....and we came from Durham! Go ACME!!

It was very good. The food was amazing however our server was not. He kept trying to sell us more of everything even though we asked for what we wanted. He was very rude to some members of our party and forgot simple things when we asked him. Members In our party didn’t like how he was always trying to sell us or say because we had a larger party we needed another bottle of wine or 2 of something. We knew what we wanted and how to order so that was not enjoyable.

We've enjoyed Acme the few times we've been, but on this visit, around 1:30 pm on Christmas Eve, we were really disappointed. Our waitress was nowhere to be found throughout our meal, the expensive" special" mimosa tasted like koolaid (my husband said it was undrinkable,) brunch potatoes tasted like they had been in a warming drawer all day, and generally the food was subpar. We left thinking something here has changed. An expensive brunch that was unappealing.
