In 2017, Acanto received a Jury Prize and 3-Star rating in the World of Fine Wine "World's Best Wine List," and a 2-Glass "Best of Award of Excellence" rating in Wine Spectator.
The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.
I took my team to lunch and everyone said their meals were very good. We had three risottos (daily special) one salad and one spaghetti.
Service was professional, efficient and attentive. I’m coming back next week with more colleagues.
Nice place to celebrate an event. A little noisy for conversation, but good food and service.
Great food and very hospitable service. I had the best dessert I’ve ever tasted- the Peach Semifredo- don’t know if I got the name right.
Lovely presentation of food, medium sized portions and very fresh. Attentive service.
The food and service are always wonderful at Acanto.
What a cute place in the middle of the city! I walked by there so many times but completely missed the it every time. But I'm so glad that my husband and I chose to dine at Acanto for our anniversary dinner. The interior design is gorgeous and cozy at the same time. Our waiter, Tony, was phenomenal. He was knowledgeable about everything on the menu and was really friendly and attentive. Our food was great. The Bruschetta with truffled ricotta and prosciutto is a must try. I loved their Insalada Di Mare, the sauce was perfectly mixed to enhance the flavor of the seafood. In the end, Tony even sent us a complimentary Apricot Polenta Cake with which was delicious. I would've definitely try their Tiramisu if I wasn't so full, maybe next time!
Ordered the Bucatini. The sauce was awesome as were the noodles. However the meatballs were way beyond just salty. I could not finish them. Which is so unfortunate because I know the flavor would have been fabulous - without all the salt.
But wait! I also ordered a side salad with their house dressing - I really could have stopped right there. It was Sooooo delicious!
Order a Tiramisu - which was lackluster. I really wanted to live it but there was no coffee or brandy flavor.
I am confident that the hiccups in the meal are not normal fair for this restaurant. I would recommend this restaurant (in fact I did in the elevator the same night!). I hope the chefs read this and make adjustments.
Little bit more on the expensive side. Right next to the Chicago Athletic Association. So you can go there for some drinks before or after a date. I went here for a date on a Sunday evening and it was decently quiet and cozy. I would say a good date spot but not a very intimate one. The service was outstanding though and the food was good.
Very pleasant as always.
The wine, food and service were excellent. Portions were adequate as the three of us shared an appetizer, house salad, pizza and entree and we were satisfied. Will definitely return - very soon.
nice place, would return
This is my current favorite restaurant, been there for pre-show dinner, valentines day, and anniversary.
This restaurant has it all, great service, ambiance, food, wine and cocktails all at a reasonable price!!!
Excellent food & service!
I always forget how wonderful the food is at Acanto. SO very delicious. Service started out a bit rough but got better and we had a lovely time.
Lovely dinner on the outside patio. My husband had the pork chop special and I had a pasta dish. Both were delicious.
Elevated Italian fare in a stylish, comfortable setting.
This was our second visit to Acanto and we loved it again. Great appetizers and service. Amazing wine list. We were celebrating two birthdays and our wedding anniversary. The staff was so thoughtful that they brought us tiramisu. Most delicious we’ve had outside of Rome!
Great night! Acanto was fabulous! Our server, Derek, was awesome - such fun :) The food was great as was the Pinot. We sat outside and people and noise were absolutely fine. It was a beautiful night in Chicago!
Perfect place with amazing food!
This last visit was not up to the Acanto standard that we have come to expect. Our server was one of the bartenders, so he did not pay much attention to us. For example, we were not offered any bread, did not really explain the specials, nor the special menu to honor Acanto’s anniversary, the reason we came.
Both the past dishes we tried were excellent! (The asparagus, unfortunately, was woody and nearly impossible to cut.) Service was great, the atmosphere was cozy, the prices were good. The location is really convenient to the theater district, Millennium Park, the Cultural Center, and the Art Institute, and outside seating is available when the weather permits. Can highly recommend for an authentic and delicious Italian meal!
We arrived for a pre-Bears game dinner with reservations for 4:30 pm. Our party of 3 were seated promptly. We took advantage of some cocktail hour specials which were both good and a bargain. Food was excellent. Had a nice glass of wine on special. Service slowed as the restaurant quickly filled. Food is excellent and wine fairly priced, especially for Michigan Avenue. It is my go to place before Bears games.
The 4 course cheese plate for $20 is a steal!
Food was excellent.
Really enjoyed our dinner this week. Great wine list, with a sommelier who, despite many more expensive wine options (and amazing wines), directed us to a lovely wine that suited the dishes we ordered at a good value. The food was delicious and the portion size, for an Italian restaurant, were just right. The dining room was comfortable, ambiance relaxed. Millenium Park and Buckingham Fountain across the street made for a lovely post-prandial walk. Lovely.
Accomodated last minute addition to the reservation. Friendly staff. Good food selection and for a larger like ours they were patient and the food came out rather quickly. No compromise on the prep.
Overall a lovely dinner. We did find it strange though that there was was no hot water coming out of the faucet in the men’s bathroom.
Acanto was the perfect spot for a date and theatre evening. The food was delicious and the service was quick and able to accommodate our theatre time without us feeling rushed.
The service was great but the food was just okay. Not particularly creative - I felt like I could make a better meal at home. Also the pasta portions were so so small. We had a pretty big bill but left still hungry.
The squid ink pasta was very good but the chefs special pork chop was excellent.
Food was so good! Started with the amazing carpaccio. We were trying to remember the arugula & pickled red onion concoction to try & make it at home. I ordered the rigatoni w/ lamb which was very flavorful & delicious (might have eaten the leftovers the next day for breakfast!) & my mom ordered the veal meatballs w/ bucatini. Both were excellent & we definitely want to return!
Fabulous food. We had the cheese and meat, and the Beef Carpaccio and the Bucatini. Wonderful atmosphere and great service.
This is a mandatory stop every trip to Chicago. Always impressive.
Excellent food and service in a convenient location near the Art Institute.
Our group of 6 could not have been more pleased. Tony guided us brilliantly from wine through desert. The milieu was charming, uplifting, classy. Thanks for a WONDERFUL evening all round!!
I have been to Acanto no less than 50 times and it has always impressed me with the level of quality and service. I happen to love the menu too. It always reminds me of that road side cafe I visited in the Chianti region of Tuscany - no pomp and circumstance - just comfortable and great.
Bustling Italian restaurant. Great food. Nice atmosphere
Our experience was OK. The ambience is very nice and the server was very helpful and attentive. The wine selection is superb. We got a good recommendation from our server - Foscarino Soave which was a good paring with our seafood courses. The food was not particularly flavorful and both main dishes were very salty. We started with the Medjool dates which were tasting and interesting. The Stinging Nettle Bigoli had nice clams but otherwise not that tasty, and salty. The fish of the day was Fluke and the fish was very nice and fresh. The sorbet was excellent. Overall, I expected a little more for this expensive of a restaurant. Nice place for a date night, however.
Very nice place for dinner, lunch and happy hour. Food was very good. Wine list was excellent. Should be a regular place to visit.
Every time I visit Chicago for business m, I come to Acanto. It never disappoints. I recommend the rigatoni with lamb ragu - it’s outstanding!
We had a FABULOUS server! She took excellent care of us and went above and beyond to get us out in time for our show but ensured we could still enjoy our meal.
