Italian
Across from Millennium park and along Chicago’s Cultural Mile, Acanto Restaurant + Wine Bar is a treasured destination for those who appreciate authentic and approachable Italian food in a conversation-friendly atmosphere. Acanto serves seasonally-driven Italian cuisine from both regions of Italy utilizing artisanal ingredients from Midwest farmers and producers. Acanto boasts one of the most lauded wine programs in the US, including a 3-star rating by World of Fine Wine and a two-glass “Best of Excellence” rating by Wine Spectator. The libations menu is rounded out by Italian classics including spritzes and negronis along with craft cocktails, beer, and spirits.

The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.

This restaurant remains one of my favorites for both out of town visitors and in town friends. Our server, Merideth, was attentive at the right times, and very knowledgeable about the food and wine.

We've been waiting 5 years to get back to Acanto, and everything was exactly as we remembered and hoped. Alex added to our spectacular evening by having just the right demeanor and suggestions and sense of humor.

Acanto is a tasty and well needed great italian restaurant along south Michigan avenue and across from Grant Park. This is no simple plate of spaghetti with meat sauce kind of joint, the sizes are well proportioned and the Italian dishes, standard in name only, are elevated. We were a table of 4 seated promptly and on the patio as requested -- without a reservation the wait would likely have been 20+ minutes. Reservation highly recommended. Our reservation was at 530p on a Friday before we headed to a concert at Soldier Field. We had three salads, two caesars and a fennel. The fennel have a nice spice to it and the caesars a light a delicious dressing -- tasted like a caesar dressing but without the heavy creaminess. The chicken piccata, bucatini con polpette (meatballs) and cavatelli were agreed to be delicious by all parties. I split the cavatelli with my husband's mom and wish I hadn't -- it was so delicious. The pasta for the cavatelli almost a gnocchi, but smaller and less doughy -- we really enjoyed it -- I would have licked my plate if at home. I didn't get to try the bucatini my my father in law really seemed to enjoy it. The piccata was very lightly pan fried with a deliciously light and flavorful buttery lemony sauce. We topped things off with a couple desserts to share -- the semifreddo and the dark chocolate torte -- both something to write home about. I do seriously want that cavatalli recipe -- definitely not like mom use to make but amazing none the less. Highly recommend. Also, we were done by 7p with plenty of time to make it to the concert.

Wow!!! We are foodies and came across this restaurant on a Google search of the area. Everything was delicious and the PACCHERI NERO “FRA DIAVOLO” was the BEST pasta dish I have ever eaten. Great ambiance, location, service, and food!!! 5 stars all the way!!!

Delightful experience overall. Nice atmosphere: stylish enough for a special occasion but not at all pretentious. The food was spot on, felt like a vacation in Southern Italy. Fresh and vibrant, not the typical heavy-handed, Rosebud/Maggiano’s type meal. Alex, our server, was a polished professional.

Hi. Reservation was for gluten free, but server did not seem to know that. I thought that was odd. The gluten free pasta (the one with lobster) was way way way too spicy. It was not edible. The server never asked how the food was, she would simply breeze by and say, "ENJOY LADIES". I was excited for my GF daughter to try Acanto, but sadly she will not want to return. What would have made you a 5? Notice when your table isn't eating a dish (don't wait for us to complain because we don't want to be "that Person", esp the younger generation, because they won't complain to you but they will tell their friends). If it is spicy, note that on your menu or have the server note that when ordering. Have the kitchen adjust spices when they can (And they can, because this was red pepper flakes). Know what you're out of. We got dessert and were excited about coconut gelato that our server said was available....only to return and say the kitchen doesn't have any.

We had to make a last minute Saturday night reservation while on a weekend in Chicago for a conference. I wanted to stay near our hotel and was able to snag a last minute reservation to Acanto. I (honestly) didn't have high hopes since a last minute reservation on a weekend usually doesn't promise a great restaurant. To my delightful surprise, Acanto was FANTASTIC. We were seated at a table outside, our server was attentive without being overbearing, and the food was magnificent and timely. I would absolutely recommend. I would love to see more non-alcoholic options. I ordered one of the few cocktails available, and it was the ONLY thing I didn't like.

After being seated at requested table I was asked to move, because they had another party needing the space. The server seemed very disconnected. Felt like we were being tolerated but she could care less about us being there. We were meeting for almost 4 hrs. When asked to leave cause it was busy and they needed the table. There were a couple of tables vacant. This made us pretty uncomfortable.

Nice venue if you’re south on Michigan Avenue. We had the bolognese & the risotto. Both good (not great). We were on a schedule and it worked for us. Would go back again and enjoy without time constraints. Still have issues with places that feature pasta but don’t provide a bread service.

We shared the breads which were very tasty. We also shared the Ceasar salad which is large so sharing one was a good idea. I had the risotto with truffle and added shrimp which was perfect. My husband thought the meatballs were just a bit too spicy for his tastes.
