About Acanto

Across from Millennium Park and along Chicago’s Cultural Mile, Acanto Restaurant + Wine Bar is a favorite destination for those who appreciate approachable and authentic Italian food, an award-winning wine list featuring selections from each of Italy's twenty regions, and an inviting, conversation-friendly dining experience.

In 2017, Acanto received a Jury Prize and 3-Star rating in the World of Fine Wine "World's Best Wine List," and a 2-Glass "Best of Award of Excellence" rating in Wine Spectator.

The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.

Excellent food, service, and romantic ambiance. The pasta is home made, very fresh. Will definitely return.

Would definitely dine here again. Favorites at our table were the beet salad and Chicken Marsala—delicious. Wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. Ask for Adrian—you won’t be disappointed. Top notch dining experience!

Went after seeing Hamilton. Had two appetizers, mussels and cheese and meat. Both excellent and the spaghetti with lobster that was also very good. A bit on the pricey side, but not outrageous. Would return

I have dined at Acanto several times, often taking out of town guests there as a memorable treat. The location, food and ambience were a consistent delight. Unfortunately, this past dining experience was much less than acceptable. Between 4 people we each ordered a different entree. Each was a disappointment. I will hesitate to recommend Acanto to others until I give it one more try myself. I sincerely hope that it doesn't disappoint again.

Great meal and service. Caroline provided great recommendations and was very friendly and attentive. A warm space. If I lived in Chicago, would go regularly.

Excellent recommendations from Sommelier. Very attentive waiter and our water glasses never emptied. Chef was on top form, everyone loved their dinner (3 out of 3). Wine list is about 20 pages deep - with a range from very affordable - to very rare and hard to find options. We all loved the atmosphere and we were never felt rushed or forgotten about. Fantastic value overall and cannot wait to come back again.

We had an early dinner before the theater. Arrived at 5:30 and it was pleasantly quiet. We had a great glass of red wine after tasting a few samples. We shared small plates from the appetizer menu. We especially loved the beet salad and the tuna and white bean salad. Service and the food were both very good!

Waitstaff is incredibly knowledgeable about the food served, wines provided. The food was absolutely exquisite! My husband and I came here for New Year's Eve dinner and it was one of the most romantic dinners we've had in a while. What made it romantic was the soft lit room, lovely wine, and the most authentic delicious Italian dinner. Though, the tables are a bit too close to each other due to the small space.

In all honesty, the few times I had been here before was because I was waiting for a table at The Gage, which has the same owner. I always like Acanto's style but never dined there. This time we did dine and it was a wonderful experience. Wonderful wines, great meal choices, and service that was present but not hovering. We are looking forward to our next visit and meal.

My sister and went to Acanto for a late lunch after spending hours at the Art Institute. It is an easy walk from the the museum. Acanto has a beautiful decor; very cozy on a cold winter day. Rick, our waiter, was very attentive throughout our leisurely meal and gave accurate discriptions of menu items. We had great tea choices, a tasty olive starter, and each had the flavorful entrees. The chef has a creative twist to the menu.

We chose this restaurant from the good reviews and that we could make a reservation and not have to wait. It was everything we expected and more! We spent more than we planned, but it was all so worth it, from the wine and appetizers, main course and desserts. Service was spectacular!

Food is good and the menu is not over whelming with an international bent. I had bean soup and insalata mista; and my daughter had a cheese and salumi plate. Very nice selection of hot teas. Service was very attentive and prompt.

I went with my husband and a friend after the theater early on a Sunday evening for dinner. It was our first time at Acanto. We were first impressed with the ambience. The room is not too big but doesn't feel crowded. The overall feeling is comfortable and warm. The service was excellent and so was the food. We had the mussels, which were cooked just right and very fresh tasting. The house made pasta was excellent. My husband loved his pork chop. We all thought the fennel sausage pizza was the best of all. The desserts were also superb. I will definitely go back when I am looking to dine in the loop or for a special evening out.

If you’re looking for an intimate, cozy scene for a date night with that special someone, this place might be what you’re looking for! The dim lighting and fireplace made my husband and my anniversary dinner feel special, and the service from Stephanie was efficient and personable. Her recommendations were spot on with the rigatoni and cappelletti! We both enjoyed our meals immensely!

The tiramisu I couldn’t say enough about. You’ll just have to walk into their restaurant, try it out, and see for yourselves!

My husband and I really enjoyed Acanto! The atmosphere/vibe was really cool and relaxed, yet classy. You could dress up or down and still fit in. The service was phenomenal. Water refills and wine refills from our purchased bottle never missed a beat. The only downside was the pasta special that came was a little colder than expected but the flavor and the homemade noodles were still amazing. Otherwise the apps and steak entree were perfect! Highly recommend!

One of the surprise meals in Chicago and we made a lot of plans for eating on this last! The food was incredible. Bruschetta, risotto, pizza and cocktails were all excellent. Blows away super popular places like Quartino. Ranked it right up there with my meal at Nico Osteria. Will be making this a regular destination when visiting Chicago.

Another exceptionally good meal at Acanto. The wine list remains one of Chicago’s best and most thoughtful. Food was well prepared and on par with meals I’ve had at Michelin started restaurants in Europe. Spaghetti with lobster in a sauce American is decadent with perfectly cooked pasta and lobster. Leave room for desert. Service was spot on.

This marks our second visit to Acanto, which was even better than the first.
The Menu is terrific with lots of very unique Italian dishes and at least a third of the menu was accessible to my Vegetarian date, which is a RARE gem!
No complaints to be found about the service, portions, or anything. Wonderful flavors! A great place to try new things!
Thanks!

The waitstaff in general were very positive and attentive. Waitress was helpful and friendly - never rushing, even though they were very busy. Our teenage son had the pork chop, which was juicy and quite tasty. Every morsel gone. I had the chicken marsala - served with roasted root vegetables. Different than I expected, but delicious. Husband had striped sea bass - it looked fantastic. Tiramisu for son's dessert was beautifully done, as was the plate of assorted goodies my husband enjoyed. A very relaxing and delicious meal.

This was our second time at Acanto, both pre-theater. The service was spot on and the food was delicious. My husband had the frittata and I the bruschetta. Both were perfectly done with good, but not oversized portions. Atmosphere is lively but not loud enough that you can't have a conversation. Overall, I would recommend Acanto for lunch/brunch. Next time, we will try dinner.

Start off with HARD TO FORGET (buffalo trace, averna amaro, smoke) or a bold red. Enjoyed the truffle mozz on the bruschetta. Delicious homemade pasta and veal meatballs. Finished off with the budino and gingerbread gelato. Comforting Italian food right before an evening show; nice and quiet early dining crowd.
