In 2017, Acanto received a Jury Prize and 3-Star rating in the World of Fine Wine "World's Best Wine List," and a 2-Glass "Best of Award of Excellence" rating in Wine Spectator.
The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.
My favorite restaurant
We had a table of 8, so there was a little delay getting our order started. We loved the food and the service was very nice. Would recommend it in that neighborhood
good experience in this restaurant for dinner on a day of the weekw
Nice patio - wouldn't even know it's on a busy street.
Great place to eat before the concert.
Though a simple menu the food was delightful. The chicken was quite good and moist. I would have it again. Gooey cake was great. Great and attentive service. I’ll be back.
A favorite go to place in the city. Food and service have always been top notch.
Excellent as always! Love the seasonal menus. Like to come here when I work late. The food is always comforting yet new to me. Business lunches are a favorite here for our office. But like to do date nights with my husband here as well.
Excellent service and great pizza. Great early bird menu.
Fabulous in every regard! We dined there 3 times during our 10-day trip to Chicago. The gluten-free rigatoni with lamb ragu was scrumptious. Huge, fresh green vegetable salad made to order. Divine rhubarb sorbet. Amazing wine list! Perfect service: 100% professional, not too formal, not too familiar. Extremely highly recommended!
Acanto is our favorite neighborhood restaurant. Great food, service and ambiance.
Great food and great service with Diego
Great location and outside dining was nice!
Had the Pizza of the day. Tasty!
We requested a window seat and received one. Staff is attentive in a welcoming lovely way.
My husband and I went here for a nice dinner and it was excellent. I'd absolutely recommend it.
Mid-day lunch was sensational. We had two kinds of pasta, both very fresh and delicious. An apricot polenta dessert is something I will not forget. Service was perfect. This is a real gem on Michigan Avenue.
Food just soso.
If you are on a first date, the place is a cute restaurant to go. However, if you are foodie and want some great Italian food, the pasta is really just about average.
During a shift change, we were
Ignored for 15-+ minutes. Server explained, apologized and was generally ok. Manager took initiative and also apologized and made our 2 glasses of wine complementary.
My veal meatball and pasta was served hot and was excellent. My wife’s spaghetti and lobster was cold and unappetizing. I’m sure they would have replaced it if we had raised the issue.
I give 4 stars because of the special recovery effort.
We went to Topo Gigio Ristorante in Okd town the next evening and the experience was wonderful.
Just the usual great service and food. You can’t go wrong. Great food at reasonable prices for Michigan Ave.
Our waiter was excellent. Great service, very enjoyable.
The cheese board was amazing. Great cheeses and delicious accoutrements, especially the strawberry/tomato/cayenne jelly!
My son had a pizza with sausage. Very good. I had tagliatelle with sausage and artichoke. Also very good. They have a great selection of Italian wines. I found a special Chianti that until Acanto, I’ve only seen in Italy. We had the basil ice cream with chocolate mousse desert. Delicious and went well with the last glass of wine. Would definitely return to Acanto in the future.
The food was excellent and the waiter was knowledgeable. We had bruschetta and kale salad. Split between 4 people, this was just right for an appetizer. We each had a different pasta dish. All were excellent. I had sweet pea mezzaluna - delicious and fresh. The cappaletti (?) was also light and great. The rigatoni with lamb Ravi was hearty and excellent. The fourth dish - was something with meatballs. I tasted a meatball - excellent. For dessert, the deconstructed tiramisu was fabulous. Decaf cappuccino was perfect.
We had CSO tickets-short walk to symphony hall. Phillip our waiter was excellent along with host.
Food fabulous & impressive wine list
We were truly disappointed. The food selection was not good. What we ended ordering was mediocre at best. The service was not particularly good and the value was poor. I would not recommend Acanto. There are much better italian restaurants in Chicago.
Disappointing. Every dish was off. Little gem salad had barely any little gem lettuce - only terrible bitter leaves that were hardly tolerable. Octopus dish had hardly any octopus but was tasty. Pizza was tasteless - didn't even taste like salt was used in the crust. Chicken piccata was fine. Thank goodness for the arancini. Cauliflower which most restaurants can do well was again bland with a weird aftertaste. After making reservations nearly 3 weeks prior, we were seated at the worst table in the house next to a swinging door and our waiter was busy behind the bar as well. Hostess not welcoming. Only redeeming factor was it was close to the theater for pre show dinner.
Their daily specials are always interesting, tasty and affordable.
The risotto special with fresh peas and mushroom sauce was a hit with all in our group. Desserts were a delight.
I have nothing but wonderful things to say about our experience at Acanto. The service was knowledgable, friendly and timely and the food was outstanding. Our party of 4 shared Prosciutto Bruschetta, Fried Artichoke Hearts with a wonderful citrusy aoli and a homemade pasta dish with veal meatballs before diving into a halibut dish that was cooked perfectly and layered with complimentary flavors. The Sommelier recommended a bottle of Pinot Noir that paired nicely with our food. They offer a generous selection of gelato, sorbets and after dinner cordials including Affogato Espresso. We selected a best selling chocolate confection with basil ice cream. Even though we don't visit often and are inundated with dining choices when we do visit, we will not hesitate to return to Acanto on our next trip to Chicago!
We sat outside on a marvelous Friday at noon and enjoyed both splendid service and food.
Acanto is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago, and this visit did not disappoint. We were there for a late lunch and had the buschetta with truffled ricotta and prosciutto, the insalata mista, the sweet fennel sausage pizza with carmelized onions and giardiniera, an olive plate, and wine. What I saw again (this was my fourth visit) and what will keep me coming back, is that they focus on high quality ingredients prepared simply and appealingly. This was the sense I had at the best places I visited on my two trips to Italy as well, and eating at Acanto makes me feel like I could be in Italy.
Love Acanto. I bring everyone here. It’s perfect if you only have an hour and it also works for a multi course meal.
We have eaten here many times and absolutely love it. This time several dishes just not up to the level we have enjoyed in the past. Pork chop was very fatty and still came out somewhat dry. Octopus was mostly potato with only a few tiny pieces of octopus. Service was handled by the bartender even though we were at a table. He was very knowledgeable but could not really handle the bar and our table effectively. Desserts were good. Pretty expensive meal not to be top notch. Will go back again as we love the room and have had many great experiences here. Deserves at least on more chance to see if it was just an off night.
Great place. They were a bit busy so there were occasional service lags but great food and a great place to be able to talk with a table of 6 very easily. The music was at a good level to promote conversation.
The food was really good, except for the Hamachi Crudo. My wife and I both thought it was off. Wasn't a normal crudo and seemed like the flavor was missing. The service was really slow for us. It was a Monday night, and we felt like we had to prod the server into assisting us. It wasn't that busy, but it seemed like our entrees took an excessively long time (and some other tables who were seated way after us received their entrees before us). That was the big miss for us.
Best gnocchi I’ve ever eaten! Just a perfect meal, that was outstanding at every course! The wine recommendation was fantastic, and everything excelled, from the cheese plate to the basil ice cream. Service was attentive and prompt.
Everyone shared their different choices. Everything was unique and delicious! Thank you for a great meal.
Acanto is our favorite restaurant. We love the intimacy and the food is always great.
The food was spot on and the atmosphere was calm and relaxing before the dinner rush.
My first time here and so pleased with the experience. The food was delicious, staff helpful and eating outside for the first time this summer was lovely. Recommend.
Food was excellent! I had the trout that was prepared to perfection!!
