In 2017, Acanto received a Jury Prize and 3-Star rating in the World of Fine Wine "World's Best Wine List," and a 2-Glass "Best of Award of Excellence" rating in Wine Spectator.
The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.
I ordered the chicken marsala. The chicken medallions (3) itself was pretty good and so was the sauce. The potatoes that were served with the chicken were hard and significantly undercooked or even cooked at all the cost $28. We ordered only one appetizer the bruschetta. It was good but only gave us 2 slices of toast with some ricotta cheese and prosciutto. Cost $12. My husband's ordered the veal meatballs with pasta. The sauce was good but only received 4 medium size meatballs cost $21. The food was good but not exceptional, and for the cost it should have been exceptional. We have had so much better and for half the price. Would not go back. Very overprice for the quality of food.
Excellent pasta and dessert. Absolutley no complaints!!!
Food was incredibly salty. Service was excellent. Wine was delicious.
I think Aconto just keeps getting better. Great food and wine, knowledgeable server and lovely room
Really loved this place. We wanted to go to the gage but couldn’t get in and I’m so glad we ended up here instead. The food was phenomenal and the wine list was spot on. I got the rigatoni for dinner which was 4/5, but the real stars were the bruschetta and the tiramisu, both of which were INCREDIBLE. We spent the rest of our Chicago trip talking about them both and wish I could have gone back just for dessert before we left town. Highly recommend!
Excellent food, wine list, service. Intimate space that is conducive to conversation.
A delicious find on our trip to The Magnificent Mile! Our server, Phillip, was fantastic in meeting our needs and recommending options.
Best duck I’ve ever had! Also the best beef carpaccio I’ve ever had, and that’s saying a lot because carpaccio is my favorite dish. It’s a pricey place to be, but a must try at least once. Wonderful wine, server, ambiance. Loved it
Great variety and quality in Italian cuisine and wines in a warm energetic atmosphere. Service was spot on. Want a superior experience when in this location - eat there.
I had a lovely brunch here the other day before the opera. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent! Looking forward to coming back soon!
A friend and I were in Chicago to shop, dine out, and see Hamilton. I thought the food at Acanto was outstanding; we enjoyed the roasted beet appetizer, kale side dish and the chef’s choice duck entree. My gin martini was fine and the suggested Pinot paired with the duck was excellent. Unfortunately, our overall experience there (and our evening in general) suffered from poor service. Our server offered us bread and forgot to bring it, failed to tell us the specials, was generally inattentive all evening, and provided a dessert menu but returned to our table so much later that we no longer had time for it. Since our reservation was early (5:45 PM) I expected better. I would return to Acanto again to see if we just happened to catch our guy on an off-night. I am happy to point out that the rest of the support staff at the restaurant seemed to do an excellent job.
Just love Acanto! Everything from appetizer to entree to service was exceptional. I look forward to our reservation and am never disappointed.
Food was good , on the speedy side ! Desert was amazing!!
Acanto was a great happy hour spot! The food was wonderful and the wine was superb. We got not only a great value, but the service was also very attentive and friendly. Great place!
A nice refreshing change from the larger and often loud dining options. Much more like a local bistro atmo. Very nice and great food as well.
I wanted to try some Italian food with my son. This was he first time I tried Italian food, and the quality of the dishes were amazing. In addition, the ambiance made me feel like I was in Italy. Because the bill was expensive, I would only come back once a year, but this experience is one I will never forget.
FOOD: BEETS: A FIRST RATE SALAD--LOVELY. SPAGHETTI WITH LOBSTER: A WONDERFUL DISH. AL DENTE PASTA AND SUBLIME CLAWS AND SAUCE. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE KITCHEN FOR THIS ONE.: ARTICHOKES: SOGGY, GREASY, UNINTERESTING. DATES: ORDERED THEM EXPECTING A NEW TAKE ON AN OLD STANDBY, BUT GOT NO INNOVATION IN THE TASTE OR PRESENTATION. TIRAMISU: CAKE WAS HEAVY AND TASTELESS--NEEDED A KNIFT TO CUT IT, CHOCOLATE SHELL NEITHER RICH NOR BITTER--WHAT HAPPENED TO LIGHTNESS?
WINE: WAITER SUGGESTED AN EXCELLENT WINE FOR OUR MEAL AT A PRICE WE SUGGESTED. GRATEFUL FOR THAT.
SERVICE: ASKED THE WAITER TO SEQUENCE THE MEAL. SERVE US THIS, THEN THIS, THEN THAT. HE DID NOT PASS THIS ON TO THE KITCHEN AND COURSES BEGAN TO COME ON TOP OF EACH OTHER. ARTICHOKES SAT ON THE TABLE WHILE WE FINISHED THE SALAD. I SHOULD HAVE BEEN EVEN MORE EXPLICIT. HE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED MORE ATTENTIVELY. OTHERWISE, WAITER WAS PLEASANT. HEAD MAN ALSO WAS PLEASANT AND WELCOMING. SUPPORT STAFF ALSO.
NOISE: QUITE NOISY UNTIL THE SYMPHONY CROWD LEFT. SHOULD HAVE ARRIVED AT 8 RATHER THAN 7:30.
Very small portions. The tuna tartar was not fresh and very fishy tasting.
Not many options for vegans (non dairy), everything has butter or cream!
Wait staff good.
Always love ACANTO,
The interior is small, modern, and clean. Excellent service provided by all staff. Our salmon dishes were excellent, as was our olive tray.
Loved the ambience
Glad to patronize a place with good food, service and the noise level was not high- I was able to speak to my friend across the table without yelling or repeating myself. Well done.
The portions were large enough that we could have a taste of the other dishes.. The half price wines at brunch was a bonus and the selection was wonderful.
My daughters and I had a lovely lunch before going to Harris Theater. We had a wonderful time, the food was great and the service was exceptional. We will definitely come back.
We were celebrating my father/in-law’s 70th and found this through Yelp. What a find!! We immediately loved the wine bar atmosphere, the service was excellent and the food was amazing. We had the (best-ever) bruschetta and salad to share. I had the cappelletti. The pasta was fresh and the sauce was light, creamy and divine. The rest of my part had the risotto special, lobster spaghetti and kale chicken salad. We had the tiramisu to share. We all agreed it was one of the best meals we’ve had and the perfect birthday lunch!
better music, italian, soft

Low key, quiet, good location, always good specials. Service always great.
Good place to go in the area, especially if you are catching a musical after! Food was average but service was great and restaurant ambiance was good.
Acanto has become our new favorite restaurant in downtown Chicago. The ambiance is warm and friendly. The service is always knowledgable and accommodating. But the food - well, it's simply delicious! Lovely wine & drink selection, too. 5 stars easily!
We love the food at Acanto which tastes exactly like the food we have had in Italy. It’s expensive but worth it.
Such a cute little place! Loved the atmosphere. Happy Hour is a great deal I just wished it lasted a little longer! The bruschetta is delicious! Veal meatballs were a little salty but the fresh pasta was amazing. Great place for a pre-theatre show!
I ordered the Duck Angliotti, which contained tender pieces of duck confit a jus with a rectangular shaped pasta. My friend had the spaghetti with lobster and reported that it was tasty. I also ordered the wine of the week, a Cabernet that went well with the duck. To finish, we shared tiramisu, which proved to be one of the best versions we’ve had. It was non-traditional and was encased in a dark chocolate shell with a cream filling and topped with a scoop of ice cream. We would go back for the tiramisu alone! The restaurant has a nice ambience and was quiet enough for conversation.
We have never been disappointed. Our waiter was personable. The ambiance is intimate and warm. Of course the food is always outstanding
Delicious food! Amazing staff... offered aperitif while we waited for our table!
Visiting from Indianapolis. Enjoyed a wonderful meal here with my husband, our daughter, and her boyfriend before a show. Service was incredible — efficient and attentive and friendly. Food and drinks were tasty. Definitely coming back the next time we’re in Chicago.
Initially felt a little rushed by our waiter but as the meal progressed he did better. Very busy venue. Seemed to have limited vegetarian options. Pastries were amazing. No salad on menu but was able to get one very close to symphony so perfect location. Enjoyed our evening.
Our table wasn’t ready at our reservation time - had to wait about 15 minutes at the bar. That would have been fine but the bartender wasn’t interested in serving us. When he did get around to asking us what we wanted, he was rude. We had to have our drinks delivered to the table (remember we had to wait 15 minutes for the table), and the beer we ordered didn’t come for another 20 minutes. Lobster spaghetti with Calabrian chiles was not warm and didn’t have calabrians. On the bright side: great arancini and cheese board, and the water service was maybe even too attentive.
Wonderful lunch in great location to the symphony. Great service and good wine and pasta
Amazing food and lovely inside. Will be back !!!
This restaurant is a winner in all regards. Highly recommended for a special night out.
