We were going back to Aboyer for the second time. When looking to make a reservation on Open Table a few days earlier the reservation required a credit cars and a penalty if you cancelled or did not show up. We weren't sure how our day would turn out on Saturday so we did not make the reservation. On Saturday evening when checking out Open Table we saw that there were a number of open time slots available so we chose 9:00PM and entered our credit card. Upon arrival the host wanted to sit us at a table right in the doorway on a cold night or a high top right in front of the kitchen doors even though there were 2 tables, one a 4 top and the other a 2 top both in a nice location against the wall. When we declined the 2 unacceptable options proposed [ note to restaurant - lose those tables ] and asked about the 2 nice tables, we were told those were being held for reservations. Ours must not have qualified. Grudgingly and with a bit of an attitude they reset the 4 top to be a 2 top and slid the 2 tops together to create a 4 top in the middle and the 2 top on the end for us while we waited. You try and figure it out. Why I still dont know as nobody ever showed up. Hope they made their money on the penalty while insulting us. Within 30 minutes the restaurant was half empty. Service was not very friendly and the food was hit or miss. Cheese plate was excellent and wine terrific and a great value. The rest was just ok, not great. Too many options out there to suffer an insult when spending good money dining out, which we do often. If we go back it will be for a cheese plate at the bar and some wine.
Really amazing. It was our 15th wedding anniversary. The food was amazing. High quality ingredients thoughtfully and expertly executed. Wine and cocktails list is spot on. Something for everyone. The staff is so warm and welcoming. I will definitely recommend to my friends and family.
Another wonderful meal, fresh ingredients, creative dishes, all delicious. Very relaxing and a perfect spot for any day.
Chef Michael does it again! Loved Micheal, love Aboyer even more! Perfect brasserie menu fare featuring some old favorites from Michael. Excellent charcuterie (the pates!!!!!) and cheese boards!
Perfect for gathering and noshing...in a relaxed atmosphere.
We went for brunch and it was definitely an upscale meal. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. Chef Michael stopped by our table for a chat which is always appreciated. I have 2 concerns - the chairs were extremely uncomfortable and I had ordered the bread service. We only ate 2 pieces so I asked for the other 2 to go and they only gave me the bread with no butter and none of the delicious fancy salt. May seem petty but I did pay for the bread service.
Aboyer continues to serve excellent meals with unique presentations in an informal atmosphere.
Great for brunch!
We went for Sunday brunch. There were only two other couples there which was surprising since I heard that it is usually crowded and noisy. Maybe brunch just didn't fit that description. My husband had Eggs Benedict, and I had Lobster Eggs Benedict. Smalls plates but very filling and extraordinarily delicious. The dark chocolate gateau with white chocolate and pistachio cardamon ice cream was heavenly. Can'[t wait to go back. Pricey but fantastic.
Very loud but great service and wonderful food.
We didn’t love our experience at Aboyer. The room is attractive and lively. But the food was hit or miss—one really good entree and the rest was just okay. And the service really turned us off. Long waits to order drinks and dinner, descriptions of entrees that were way off. Add to that an $8 charge for parking in their own lot and I don’t think we’ll be back.
The service was wonderful and the food was delicious. The valet attendant was great. My only suggestion would be to turn down the music and select a better playlist for evening dining. The restaurant was loud with the music that was being played.
I was disappointed with the dinner entrees
Great addition to Northshore!
Wonderfully dinning experience! Every dish was thoughtful prepared and presented!
Loved the decor. Very inviting. Had a drink a the bar and that was great (a very nice pour!). Service was impeccable. Food was delicious. The bread service was totally worth it. My husband loved the lobster rolls. I had steak frites and the steak was done perfectly. The chimichurri Bernaise was honestly to die for! I will go back soon to try other dishes!
Loved it! Food was delicious and service attentive. Only complaint is that it's a little bit loud.
It was great! Delicious food, reasonable prices and great service! Will be back!
Excellent food. A bit too much noise. The wait staff needs more training. Overall very good and I would return.
Great food! Fun atmosphere! Cheese board was unbelievable as was the lobster roll and chicken. We are definitely going back! Homemade ice creams and sorbets were out of sight!
I took my very good friend here for her 60th birthday; it was our first time. Not only was the food STUPENDOUS, but the overall experience was, honestly, exhilarating...! From the proprietor Michael, to the sommelier Sergio, to our waiter Sean, to the maitre d' (I hope I have all my names correct!), we left feeling like absolute VIP's! To not only eat amazing food and drink amazing wine, but to be able to discuss everything intellectually with the staff, was an unparalleled joy!!! If you seek an exceptional and out-of-the-ordinary dining experience, I cannot recommend Aboyer enough...now I can't WAIT to hit Silencieux and George Trois, for I know they will be an equally phenomenal way to spend an evening! Bravo, bravissimo to Michael!!! ps. And the frozen orange souffle is NOT TO BE MISSED!!!
The experience at Aboyer was wonderful. We expected a noisy, crowded place and it was, which made it fun. The food and service were superb. Starters: Roasted corn soup was unexpectedly unique, and the potato with Bechamel sauce also a surprise treat. Both delicious. We each had the scallop special, three huge diver scallops in a gentle balsamic sauce with mushrooms, potato and tomato. Fantastic! Moderately pricey by today’s standards but well worth it!
Our meal was absolutely delicious! We had a scallop special and LOVED it. We miss the quiet of the former Restaurant Michael but loved the food. There were many items on the menu that looked appealing so we are eager to return.
Server was polite but the overall meal was very, very slow in coming. My chicken dish was fine but nothing special. As a beer drinker, only 2 choices is quite weak. At a minimum you should have an IPA and a low calorie offering as well. The dessert we ordered was the souffle. It arrived at our table frozen rock hard. It was a struggle to chip off a bite and we had the feeling that it had been in the freezer for awhile. The ice cream assortment was very tasty but a little bit larger spoonful would not have been out of order. The only bread offered with some of the starters is olive-ridden. It would be nice to have another option for those who don't like olives. This was my second visit. My food the first time was much better: the rabbit sausage starter and the steak frites.
Outstanding experience. Good bread service with flavorful olive loaf. Creamy corn soup, seasonal, excellent. Gravlax served with bagel. Flavorful home-made Gravlax. Lobster Egg- Benedict a real
treat. Coffee- flavorful.
Outstanding attentive waitstaff. Brunch is a real treat here. Quieter than in evenings. This location is a real gem.
A wonderful new find in Winnekta. I went for Sunday brunch with local friends and it was a great experience. The food was excellent!!
Outstanding French contemporary fare in Winnetka. Food was served at the appropriate temperature, whether hot or cold, flavor was superb, and service very nicely done. Well worth the expense.
I miss Restaurant Michael, a favorite for many years, but Aboyer has the same high quality of food and lets us eat a la carte so I don't leave feeling stuffed. I wish the vegetables were more than a garnish and were what the menu said. I was really looking forward to having the brown butter spinach with my salmon.
Our first time back since the conversion of Restaurant Michael to Aboyer and Silencieux. We went on a Sunday at 5:15 and it was (delightfully for us) quiet, allowing for a lot of interaction with staff. When full, I suspect the noise level would be significant. The food was amazing. I had escargot and hangar steak with frites-outstanding. My wife had corn soup and coq au vin, also excellent. Ice cream and the frozen Grand Marnier custard finished off a delightful evening. Don’t pass on the bread service, it is amazing-could be the best 4 bucks I ever spent. Nice choice in wines. Service was excellent (thank you Shane). Ambience was great but on a different day/time I imagine it could be boisterous. A wonderful evening!
We have enjoyed two dinners there. The four entrees we ordered were excellent. Scallops, hanger steak, pork chop and trout. Very noisy on Saturday night, will go back during the week. Great new find in the neighborhood!!
We dined early so service was very attentive and noise level good. Food was excellent and creative along with traditional French. Portion sizes were generous. We will be back soon!
Aboyer is fabulous. A bit noisy, but the food is delicious and well presented which is no surprise given that Micheal is the chef. The drinks are good (could be a bit quicker to be served) but excellent. The atmosphere is comfortable with a simple chic feel. Also great that Michael always comes around to tables to say hello. A must try.
Chef Michael wins again with this local gem! Dinner selections were wonderful and the new interior is current and comfortable. Outstanding service as always. Thumbs up👍🏻
I had been to Aboyer once before for dinner, where the food was great, the service was mediocre and the noise level was prohibitive. I returned for dinner with some other friends, eager to introduce them to the really enjoyable menu, but the service was so atrocious -- actually negligent -- that it spoiled our experience. Clearly they were understaffed for the size of the crowd, but even then, they did nothing to ameliorate the situation with even the smallest of efforts. There appeared to be only one main server, who also took drink orders and filled in at the front desk. It took 20 minutes for him to even ask if we wanted to order wine and when our third guest arrived and ordered her wine, he never brought it. We waited another 30 minutes for him to come take our dinner orders, and this was after asking no less than 3 other waitstaff (busboys?) to please get someone to take our order. Throughout, no one ever made any attempt to say, "We're sorry for this inconvenience", "We appreciate your patience". The attitude translated to us truly feeing ignored. A number of other tables that came in after us somehow got their food well before we did. Additionally, all of our shared dishes arrived with no utensils with which to serve the food. Altogether we spent 3 hours there for a single, regular dinner, most of it wasted by the terrible lack of service. I have to think twice about ever returning.
First off, thank you for coming back to Aboyer. Unfortunately, on your 2nd visit (above) you were a table for 4 and your 4th guest was 20 minutes behind you. The waiter, Peter, got you bread and wine and when your 4th arrived, 20 minutes later, he took your full order. I'm sorry if you felt ignored, that was not the intention. It is our policy to take only full orders to the kitchen so as not to disrupt the rest of service. this is why other tables were served before you. Best, Michael
We applaud the rethinking of Michaels into a more casual experience. But the noise level is really uncomfortable, the chairs and tables not very appealing and they are too tightly packed in. It would benefit from a good designers assistance. The bar is nice but there’s too much in a small space.
However the food is very good. Much better than the overall experience. We hope they continue to listen to loyal fans and make needed changes to the ambience.
We really enjoyed the food, meeting the chef, and the overall experience.
They pour a nice cocktail too.
I'm looking forward to going back.
We were seated at 8:15 for a 7:30 reservation. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the waiter didn’t come to our table until 8:30. Given how long we waited to be seated, that was infuriating. He just finally came to the table and asked if we were ready to order. No apologies for the delay or offer to buy drinks or appetizers. He never even asked for a drink order. We ordered and ate our appetizers and dinner. Staff began setting out silverware for dessert. We let them know we did not want dessert and asked for the check. They proceeded to bring several desserts which we said we did not want. We again asked for the check, which they brought. We were charged for everything we ordered (not the desserts which we didn’t touch/told them not to bring). We provided our credit cards and expressed our displeasure that we were fully charged given the poor experience. The chef came out and YELLED at us that nothing would make us happy. There were words exchanged and in the middle of the restaurant, he said he would fight my husband! There are very, very serious problems with this restaurant and its management.
I'm sorry CherylB but this is an egregious lie. Your husband was abusive to my staff all night long. He was beyond rude to the point where other tables asked if he was drunk or simply rude to a fault. I've been here for 15 years and have never experienced a guest like your husband. Clearly the other couples with you were embarrassed by his behavior. As for fighting your husband, I am a grown man that does not suffer fools but I don't threaten guests. Is this high school? Silliness...
Great food (and not just by suburban standards)! The lamb and trout were the best I’ve ever had, and we try new restaurants often. Going back is a no brainer. Would definitely recommend.
Aboyer is but one of a trio of outstanding restaurants at this location. Presiding over all three is Chef Michael Lechowicz. It is astonishing that he is able to cover the complete spectrum of French cuisine from the exquisite formality of George Trois to the more relaxed quiet excellence of Silenciuex to the casual affordable bistro of Aboyer. The volume at Aboyer may be higher, the price point lower and the vibe more lively but the attention to detail and quality never wavers. Michael has an outstanding team and the operation runs very smoothly. The menu has a nice variety with something to suit any taste. Ingredients, preparation and presentation are all outstanding. Beverage service covers the spectrum from wines to cocktails and even mock-tails. Service is friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I can’t recommend it highly enough. They say you can’t please everyone but Chef Lechowicz has come as close as possible to doing just that. If you’re looking for exquisite French cuisine and a fun casual atmosphere you can’t go wrong at Aboyer.
