Let me begin by saying I have been coming to Abacus since it opened many years ago. I have always thought, and still do, highly of Chef Rathbun. Very creative and lots of great tastes. But the last 3 visits over the past several months I have noticed a decline in the food quality overall. The service was superb. It is somewhat loud. The main reason for low rating on food was the venison. It was tough and I could not chew all of it. Had to remove grit from mouth repeatedly. Also the venison was not very flavorful. The black truffle risotto was superb as always. But it was not enough to overcome the poor quality of the main course. Very disappointing. It bothers me because I know abacus can do better. I hope you will improve and stay in business, but this is concerning.
The service was quite attentive. I didn’t find the menu to be very interesting and the food was just okay. Nothing wrong with the food. It simply didn’t make much of an impression. I had eaten there some time ago and remember being significantly more taken by the food.
Excellent dining experience, impressive wine list, great service! Lobster shooters, venison, and swordfish, all highly recommended, but you can't go wrong, really, with anything on the menu. This is our new favorite, will be back soon!
The food was outstanding as was the service. The booth was very nice for 2 people and we'll be back again.
There were so many interesting and appealing choices on the menu for the both starters and mains that we found it hard to choose. What we did choose: quail knots, mussels, pork tenderloin and duck were outstanding.
Service was attentive but not intrusive. When the kitchen got a bit backed up with a large private party they filled the gap with a tasty complimentary salad, which was most welcome.
We enjoyed some cocktails, a well priced good wine and a leisurely meal in the back room part of the restaurant which was a little quieter than the front.
We are looking forward to returning on a Tuesday which is half price bottle of wine night to try something more pricey.
The waiter was a little slow at the start, but everything went well afterwards - Thanks
The food, service band atmosphere was wonderful. This is one of the best restaurants in Dallas
Excellent variety of menue items!
Adam was great. Food over the top delicious. Venison, steak, mussels all perfect.
Abacus had great food and the service was amazing.
Abacus is an excellent restaurant, and the fact that they have been so consistently rated for so long shows that they are a cut above the rest of the morass that is the Dallas dining scene.
We have been coming to Abacus for years and love to celebrate special events there. This trip was a little less than we expected but still good. Service is always good and our waitress was wonderful and attentive. Our reservation was at 7:30 so the restaurant was hopping but we were seated immediately and had a drink in hand in 5 minutes. What we had on our minds to order (the Redfish) was sold out so we opted for the steak and the venison. The steak was well prepared but pared with veggies that were not so tasty. The venison was excellent! We opted for mac and cheese side (nothing special) and brussel sprouts (perfection). Dessert was chocolate cream brulee and something else - can't remember.... but they were good, just not anything special. We will come back but I hope next time it will be as good as I remember from times past. All in all, a great place to eat and have a good, pleasant meal.
Food was amazing, Cliff's service was even better!
The experience really made you rethink food as a consumer. The lobster shooters were really good and so neat to eat/drink! Definitely a great choice for fine dinning!
I first went to Abacus nearly twenty years ago and as usual on Saturday we had an excellent meal and great service.
Risotto was amazing
Fabulous experience! Eclectic menu, wonderful flavors, and delightfully attentive service.
Always a great quality of food, and the service measures up to its reputation. Wine prices are a little high.
Pretty mediocre, nowhere near as good as it used to be
Our first visit....don’t know why it took us so long. Couldn’t have been a more satisfying experience. Exemplary service and food to die for from sushi through four different entrees and desserts as artistic as delicious. Plus a polished bar for after dinner drinks. A neighborhood gem with big city ingenuity.
We had an early dinner to catch a musical. I thought the food was OK? We had the Lobster Rolls--tasty! I had the duck and it was not "gamey" at all. I thought everything was OK not spectacular!
Great experience for ladies night!
Everything about our time was great. Service, food, ambiance.
The lobster shooters never fail to delight. The sushi was wonderful as usual. Our service was very very good and we all enjoyed our meal cocktails and want to eat very very much
Fun time, great atmosphere and service
Great food and you really get an amazing overall experience for the price. Love it.
My wife and I had a wonderful dinner here. Despite a busy dining room, the food came out well paced. The lobster shooters are always great and the short rib and wagyu filet were both outstanding. The lobster bisque is good, but it's not the traditional creamy, rich soup you might be expecting. Highly recommended!
We've been coming to Abacus since the very beginning. The service is still very good, as is the food - except two entrees were not even warm so had to go back to the kitchen, but were returned a few minutes later hot. Unfortunately I have two complaints: #1) When I made the reservation, I explained it was my husband's birthday, so I was surprised the only acknowledgment was the waiter saying happy birthday. I would have thought one dessert would have been complimentary. #2) We eat at a ton of restaurants in the Dallas area, from cheap tacos to fine dining, and we can't understand why the wine list doesn't have a wider range of prices.
Great place to have dinner. Enjoyed everything about the experience.
Honestly, when is a meal ever worth over 300? But if you are going to spend that much, this is a good place to do it. Great food, drinks, and service
Great waiter, wonderful food and wine.
Excellent food and service. This is my favorite place to eat.
Great wines with amazing steaks, and sushi rolls to boot. The team is range to deliver the very best in food, and service!!
Best steak I’ve had in Dallas!
Solid value and good service. Nothing remarkable, but consistent and good. Fair wine list but could use updating. Very good cocktail choices.
Outstanding value for quality food and outstanding service. Friendly staff as well as knowledgeable in all positions from the bar though dessert. Great for a date in the main dinning room or a group of friends in the bar area, especially during their great happy hour!
In addition to taking advantage of great happy hour specials in the bar before dinner, we really enjoyed our salads and dinners - lamb and ossobuco. Both were fantastic. Friendly and low key service. Always end up enjoying our meals even more than we expected.
A really excellent meal again. We've eaten here several times, and will certainly be back again. Management went above and beyond to make our evening special. This remains one of Dallas' finest restaurants, and to some extent almost a 'hidden' gem of Dallas now - as quickly as fine dining restaurants gain and lose favor in this town, Abacus stays consistently excellent as well as unique.
It was great! Not sure our servers name, but he was tall (6'3/6'4) white guy with blonde hair. He was great. Made our date fun, and is really good at lightening up the mood.
Abacus hasn't really been the same since it lost its found, Kent Rathbun, some 3 years back. The decor, although elegant seems a bit dated and the limited menu cries out for some other options. However, the service is still superb and the entrees are spectacular. We weren't as thrilled with the appetizers. The shrimp poppers were about on par with something you pulled out of the freezer and the lump crab with BBQ sauce reminded us of the overly breaded crab cakes you'd expect from an all-you-can-eat buffet. The BBQ sauce made for a different flavor profile as you might expect, but fairly disappointing over all. Of course, you can always go back to the Rathbun delicacy, lobster shooters, but it seems disrespectful to order them somehow.
The entrees were in another class entirely, however. The grilled Cervena Venison with blackened gulf shrimp, pepperjack grits and guajillo chili butter was scrumptious and worth a hearty recommendation. The venison was especially good, not gamy and cooked to a savory and tender perfection. My wife who is taking a break from the mercury enhanced seafood, including Ahi (her favorite fish) went with the smoked chicken breast with a bleu-cheese walnut stuffing. Very good as well.
We finished off with mixed berries and whipped cream and two superb Carajillos ( a wonderful drink made with espresso and Liquor 43 over ice). You should try them.
We arrived early but the rooms filled up quickly for a Friday night and from what I could tell, everybody was having a great time. We'll keep Abacus on our rotation for now, but here's hoping for a little innovation before the next visit.
