A1A Ale Works
Our tradition of food made fresh, from scratch, and our unique selection of 22 craft beers are the most evident examples of this passion. Our restaurant and people offer a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, attentive and friendly service, fresh food carefully and creatively prepared. We feel it is this combination of elements that make a great dining experience possible.
Unfortunately, we were there during the reduction in patrons and alcohol because of the Covid-19. It was confusing for the waitstaff with the on again off again sale. The food was good as was the service once the confusion was over. We sat outside on the balcony and it was gorgeous. They also took ya earlier than our reservation time which was a nice surprise.
The service was great, and the atmosphere is lovely, but the food was absolutely terrible. Everything was completely bland and overcooked. Even just some salt would of helped. We didn’t even take our leftovers home because it was SO bad. Definitely not worth the money. I contacted the restaurant about my experience and they never responded. I will not be going back.
We have eaten here many times and we always have a good meal with great service. I tried the Seafood Paella for the first time and it has a little more sauce and not as much rice as traditional Paella but it is an excellent dish.
Everything was excellent - the food, drinks, service and atmosphere.
Food and service was very good.
Good food with a nice view of the harbor.
I have been here several times. Each time has been very pleasant experience.
We had reservations at 7:00 but having a reservation at A1A Ale House doesn’t mean you won’t have to wait. When we checked in the hostess said to give them 10 minutes. I was okay with that, I understand that sometimes there’s a delay. But we were left standing and waiting for 30 minutes. We were finally seated at 7:30. And to make matters worse, we were given a tiny table cramped into a small space. There were too many tables in a small area. We could barely get into our seats. It was disappointing to say the least.
Our server was very inattentiveAnd our food was lackluster. The ambiance was okay but not what I had liked.
The food and ambiance were great as always, we had a very good server and the price was right.
Went for a casual dinner for my friend bachelorette and it was perfect! The staff members were funny and kind and ensured we had a great dinner!
Drinks were horrible. Service was mediocre. Waiter was not very attentive.
We had a large group for Valentine's Day weekend at A1A Ale Works. They called me on the phone when the table was ready and the staff was very friendly even though the place was packed. Our server was excellent and incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. He made some recommendations which everyone enjoyed.
Our waiter was friendly but definitely took his time with bringing drinks and the check. The food took a long time as well but that is easily out of the waiter's control. I did not like my meal so it was replaced but I was still charged for my meal. If everything else was phenomenal, I would not have minded paying for the meal.
Sadly, we were very disappointed with our experience here. In no particular order:
1) Seats in the booth were old and hard as the cushioning has apparently deteriorated over time.
2) My salad came DRENCHED in dressing.
3) Coffee was served lukewarm at best. When I sent it back I was told they would make a new pot, but it immediately was returned - oddly needing no more milk or sugar .... obviously it was just put in the microwave.
4) Noise level due to live music being performed (downstairs from our table) was excruciating - could barely carry on a conversation.
5) Mens' room was filthy with trash overflowing all over the floor.
Nice views and good food. Good service.
Always a fabulous meal and experience! We get a table by the window to have less noise and crowd. Love this place!
This was my Birthday Dinner and it was a disaster. First one of the receptionist was coughing and sneezing all over the menus, she was sick and still at work affecting who knows how many customers. Then My wife ordered Blackened Tuna and it was horrible and had to be returned. The manager never came over once to apologize while we waited for another entree to be prepared. I’ve lived in Saint Augustine for the past 15 years, have visited A1A aleworks numerous times and have realized it is progressively going downhill. Unless something changes this establishment is heading in the wrong direction.
Worth a visit, nice venue
We enjoyed our dinner so much that we went back for lunch. We both started with the Side House Salad which was much more than a simple side salad because the greens were topped with cheddar and pepper jack cheeses, cucumber, bacon and spicy candied pecans. Our dinner meals were Shrimp and Grits and Pecan Crusted Salmon. The grits were nice and cheesy and there were plenty of shrimp and mushrooms. The salmon was cooked perfectly, as well as the zucchini and carrots. Our lunch meals were Jambalaya and Sesame Tuna. Again, quite delicious. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. We highly recommend A1A Ale Works.
Both the manager and Ben bent over backwards to make our dining experience enjoyable. Great food and drinks overlooking the historic downtown and lights. Thanks for a great St. Augustine experience!
Nice setting. Pretty average meal and service.
Loud, food was average. Only good part was the view of the bridge of lions.
Food just OK. Nice place to eat, service was good just nothing special on menu that knocked our socks off.
Don't go for the food. View is nice as we sat upstairs on balcony. Service was fine.
Four of us had dinner outside on the balcony as requested. All except my husband enjoyed the entrees and drinks. (My husband's barbecue chicken was "nuked" and the potatoes were hard. Because he didn't want to hold things up, he didn't send it back). Chloe's service was exceptional given the crowds and the Nights of Lights view from our table was stunning. Chloe apologized to my husband for the unacceptable chicken and asked if he would like anything else. He declined and she comped his beer. Because we have eaten at A1A Ale works for many years with no issues, we will treat the "nuked chicken" as an aberration and will definitely be back.
We went because it had so many good reviews but we're so disappointed. The food is not as described nor is it good. Salt and pepper go a long way and when you call them garlic mashed potatoes there should actually be garlic in them. Also, when the menu says BBQ chicken on a skewer then actually put it on a skewer. That is my biggest pet peeve when eating out. Serve what it says on the menu or don't serve anything. Atmosphere was nice, service was ok but not great. We were a party of five and everyone got their food well ahead of mine. None of the food was really got except for the pretzels app which was actually really good!
Hi Cheryl, I'm sorry you did not enjoy your meal during your recent visit to A1a Ale Works. I wish you would have let a manager know at the time so that we could have corrected any issues. I will get with our Chef on the mashed potatoes. We roast the garlic every morning and the potatoes are usually a big hit. As far as the chicken it does not come on a skewer. The choices are BBQ chicken or a shrimp skewer. I apologize for the confusion. Sincerely, Phillip Maddox General Manager
Birthday for 94 year old relative
Very nice experience
We were rendezvousing with cousins we haven’t seen in years. I made a reservation for six in my name. When we got to the hostess and asked for our table, she said that it was funny because she had another person named Penny come in just a little while before. I didn’t think much about it, and as she sat us in a booth for six I mentioned that the cousins might be looking for the reservation in my husband’s name. But we sat, then we went ahead and ordered a drink, and still we sat. By the time we’d been waiting a full half hour, I suggested that my husband call his cousin to see what was wrong. Turns out, THEY were the “other Penny” and had been sitting in another area for over a half hour wondering where we were. We had a limited amount of time before folks had to get back on the highway to head home, so losing over a half hour of visiting time was not good. And the receptionist never really apologized, as though it were our fault for the mixup. Then a second round of drinks never arrived. The food was very good, but we will probably look for another more reliable venue next time.
Service was slow and food was bland.... our server Rob was very nice and professional but water went empty for a long time and I had to get up to get plates for our dessert to share. Overall, not so great experience
We love A1A. Great service. Great views. We love to sit outside during Nights of Lights.
Although we reserve a week in advance , hostess would not provide a booth. Food was fair but not great, Paella was done by someone that does not know how to cook a Paella, used wrong rice so as a result I had a soup not a Paella, chorizo was in my opinion Italian sausage of some sort or the worse chorizo in the market. Stay away from Paella
Wonderful food and service. When in St Augustine we always eat here.
My experience in this restaurant was very awful, and I do not recommend this place if you do plan to dine with your family.
I did order a new york strip steak ( well done) and got instead a charred, scorched, and burnt steak. It was like a burnt piece of coal. The problem was not the steak but was the behavior of the server, a young lady who reacted aggressively by removing the plate from the table and left without saying any words.
I was shocked, and then I tried to explain to the server the way she behaved but she said: " I am not the one who cooked it". That was insane as she never apologized for the burnt steak, and never took a time to address the situation with us.
We were so disgusted, disappointed and humiliated that we have decided to leave the restaurant after waiting for one hour for the food. We wanted to speak with the manager but the server did not really bother to let her manager aware of such horrible service.
This message is for the restaurant manager: please take the time to review my complaint and address the behavior of the server because she definitely not a fit for the job.
Her only skill is to ruin the guest's experience.
Loved the linguine! Noisy but cool environnent, a bit pricey but totally worth it!!!
Enjoyed ourselves, the potatoes were very delicious. The bottom of the salmon was a little burnt but it was still good. I understand the place was extremely packed and the cooks had to be very backed up and stressed.
The overall experience was very good and we would come back again.
Great food and excellent service!
We had a wonderful time. We went during the Nights of lights and it was PACKED! People everywhere. I am so glad we made reservations. We were late due to finding parking, but I called to let them know. I knew we would have to wait since we were late. But hey got us right in. Our waitress, Kaitlen I think was here name. It was her first day on her own. She was wonderful. Very attentive.
Seated pretty promptly. Do make reservations as this is a popular place. Nice selections of beers ( the Irish Red is excellent). Good burgers. Parking can be problematic but we walked from the hotel.
We used to love A1A, but our recent visits have not been what we expect. The food seems to be average for a town with so many food options. This last visit, they went a bit overboard with the black pepper. For the price I would expect more from the kitchen. The price was fair and The service and the view are the only memorable experience. It will be a while before we try it again (let the memory fade a bit).
